At times like this, the actuality is that they are choosing fear. "Trust" becomes the poster child of fear. "How can I ever trust someone again?" or "Can I trust you?" become common thoughts, and phrases for the person in fear. We decide we can't trust, and so we make decisions that keep us safe from our fears. In my personal case, I decided to become celibate.  It was safe. I didn't have to trust again.

To trust another is to completely render yourself vulnerable. How can you truly live your life without releasing the fear, and trusting? Relationships suffer because of the lack of trust, but trust is a choice. It is the choice of the person who is giving the trust. To release your fear and trust is to allow the good things to come rushing into your life.

 

I recently entered into a new and wonderful relationship.  I felt pangs of love for her, and immediately began fearing that love being false, or worse yet, that I was unworthy of it. I decided first of all that I needed to trust love. If I trusted love, and nurtured love, then love would be what I was creating in my life. I informed my girlfriend Kelly that I was dealing with trust issues, and that they were my issues, and they had nothing to do with her. I know full well that she was not only trust worthy, but the one that I loved and trusted. It was my issue because they were my feelings and as such I needed to deal with them.

 

As with any change in life it takes some time creating the muscle memory to release the fear. I had to force myself to let go of the fears from the past, and trust this amazing person, who has brought a level of joy back into my life that I had dismissed as folly. I allowed myself to be vulnerable, all the while informing her of what I was going through. This process of working through issues with your partner helps build trust as they are the one you are sharing intimate secrets of your vulnerability with. They become the "trusted" confidant, and your trust builds along side the growth of your relationship.

Trust is like a relaxing exhale when you first give it fully. The lack of trust is just a symptom of fear. I love my partner Kelly, and my faith in her is proven everyday as she helps me through my issues.  I breathe easier everyday as we create a beautiful future built on a foundation of love, mortared with trust.
