Local Girls Make a Name
in Hospitality/Travel Biz!
You can imagine how excited we were when Pasadena Star News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Whittier Daily News and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin featured our company and NEW Pasadena Tour in their papers! We were raised in the San Gabriel Valley - so to see a BIG feature in the local paper was quite a thrill for us. We invite you to read Michelle Mills' lifestyle feature in the Pasadena Star News here. The group photo in the article was taken on August 15th tour - maybe you are in the photo? |

There's so much to love about Pasadena.
We most love the food, of course, but check out what else is happening there in the next few weeks. For our architecture buffs, the annual Garfield Heights Home Tour is coming up on Sunday afternoon, October 4, and October 16-18 is Pasadena Heritage's 18th Annual Craftsman Weekend, the most comprehensive salute to the Arts & Crafts Movement in the western U.S. Our art lovers will surely enjoy Celebrate the Arts In Pasadena with Art Night, a citywide arts open house on Friday evening, October 9, and Art Walk, a celebration of arts in the Playhouse District on Saturday, October 10. Just for fun, plan to attend the One Colorado Around the Block Party, a store-to-store party with free gifts, special discounts, prize drawings and live music on Thursday evening, September 17. And for all our wine lovers out there, please note a special tasting event on Thursday evening, September 24, at Heritage Wine Company, one of our featured merchants on the Old Pasadena Food Tour. Wines to be poured are from Robert Hall Wines of Paso Robles, the top pick for California Merlot in this month's Gourmet magazine. Tours in Pasadena run every Saturday and Sunday - click here for more details and to purchase tickets. |
Did You Know?
The FAB FOUR - Beatles - John, George, Paul, Ringo - visited the Original LA Farmers Market in 1964 and bought Magee's Peanut Butter?
They wrote a signed letter to say "Thank you, it was fab!" A copy now stands on the Magee's nut counter as evidence! P.S. Did you know it's the 40th anniversary of Abbey Road and the 45th anniversary of the Beatles debut in L.A. at the Hollywood Bowl? |
Ode to Our Tour Guests by Diane Scalia
A few months ago, it occurred to me that it wasn't really possible for me to review my tour guests. It didn't seem fair.
By now all of those feelings have passed, and the only thing that seems unbalanced now, is that up til this moment, I haven't been able to sing the praises of my tour guests.
Melting Pot Food Tours officially celebrated its first birthday in July. We are very, very flattered by the reviews we've been receiving and, I promise that a lot of that credit deserves to be passed back to the guests who really, really add to the joy the tours have rendered ... especially in the last couple weeks. Miss Know-It-All (aka Lisa Scalia)
Ever bamboozled by the numerous varieties of apples, or wonder where they came from or how they were named? Well now that prime apple season is upon us, the following just might make your next trip to buy apples a little more interesting. Let's start with the ubiquitous Granny Smith. A seedling first discovered in a compost heap near Sydney, Australia in the 1860's by Maria Ann Smith (and named for her), Granny Smith apples have an acidic flavor and are good for pies and in salads. It was such a popular variety by the 1960's that the Beatles used it as their logo for their company 'Apple Records'. Rome Beauty is an heirloom variety which originally hailed from a seedling in Rome Township, Ohio (and is named for such) and was first introduced in 1816. It is mainly a cooking apple and is good for cakes and applesauce. And the increasingly popular Fuji Apple, likely named for Mt. Fuji, was developed in Japan in the 1930's and is a cross between Red Delicious and a variety from the 1700's known as Ralls Janet. Fujis are crisp and sweet flavored and are good for eating out of hand and in salads. So enjoy the apple season and don't forget, an apple a day...

Brilliant! A great insight under the skin of L.A "An experience I cannot recommend enough. My wife and I left the tour with not just a better understanding of the food in the area, but a much greater understanding of the city's history and an insight of a 'real' LA. On top of the fantastic tour, the other members of our group were a mix of tourists and Angelenos, they gave a further depth to the entire experience. My wife and I often shy away from tours, finding them touristy and restrictive. This tour broke all those stereotypes. Fantastic!" Melting Pot Food Tours
