Greetings!
|
Following a summer filled with the inflammatory
rhetoric of "death panels," Dr Byock's presentation at the annual Voices of Palliative Care Conference, provided a refreshing perspective on dying
well. Imagine the cultural
transformation that would occur if, before dying, we all remembered to say Dr.
Byock's four things that matter most, "Please forgive me, I forgive you, thank you
and I love you." Wow! Our community
continues to host outstanding speakers. Dr. Pauline Chen, author of Final Exam,
is coming to Denver
this October to share her compassionate reflections on advanced planning and caring
well for the dying. We also congratulate
one of Colorado's
highly-respected physicians, Dr. Dan Johnson, Director of Life Quality
Institute. The Denver Business Journal recognized Dr. Johnson as being one of Colorado's 2009 Champions in Health Care. While 2009 draws to a
close, Breakfast at Brookdale and a new series Called to Care: Caring
Conversations about Caregiving will kick off a fabulous slate of educational programs for 2010. Additionally, Life Quality Institute is venturing into new educational
territory this year, e-learning. Be sure
to keep checking the calendar for exciting new offerings.
Thank you to all of our supporters. Your unwavering generosity is shaping the
future of care for individuals with advanced disease. We urge you all to support
compassionate healthcare and change the experience and culture of dying in Colorado by making an
on-line donation to Life Quality Institute. |
Lenses to Truth, by Daniel Johnson, MD, FAAHPM
|
Amidst the recent onslaught of misleading rhetoric
on end-of-life care, we Coloradoans are fortunate to have two acclaimed,
visiting physicians afford us very different lenses to illuminate end-of-life truth
and growth: Drs. Ira Byock and Pauline Chen.
I hope you were able to spend the day with Dr. Ira
Byock at September's 2009 Voices of Palliative Care - a truly amazing,
thought-provoking experience. Ira Byock urges
us as persons and care providers to think much more broadly about life's final
journey. Rather than overly narrowed
efforts focused on "fixing the brokenness of disease," Byock challenges us to recognize
that life's precious last days offer, instead, a unique opportunity to explore personhood,
wholeness and healing.
On October 29th, we can explore
end-of-life care through the distinctive perspective of Dr. Pauline Chen, an
accomplished transplant surgeon and author of Final Exam: A Surgeon's
Reflections on Mortality. Dr. Chen - an
enduring champion for humane and compassionate end-of-life communication - will
provide the plenary session at a statewide symposium entitled " Can We Talk? Conversations for Navigating Our End-of-Life Journey." Through poignant stories of patients and
providers caught in the turmoil of modern health care reform, Dr. Chen will illuminate
prospects for growth in the midst of chaos.

Breakfast at Brookdale 2010
|

Have you ever heard of a deal that was just too good to be
true? Sure you have. We all have. But honestly, I have an incredible deal for
you! You are invited to share a delicious breakfast provided by Brookdale
Senior Living at one of their fabulous facilities along with other healthcare
professionals, clergy, pastoral caregivers, social workers, students, and
community members. As you partake of crepes, fruit, pastries, eggs, and sausage,
enjoy reconnecting with old friends and making new acquaintances. Furthermore, Breakfast at Brookdale is a tremendous
educational opportunity. Over the course of the year, Jane W. Barton, the
Community Educator for Life Quality Institute, will provide thought provoking
presentations on professional boundaries, spirituality and end of life issues,
grief, and family systems and caregiving.
Please refer to the Educational Preview 2010 for dates, locations, and
specific topics.
To register for any Breakfast at Brookdale event, please
contact Lizabeth Geiser at (720) 291-7917 or lgeiser@brookdaleliving.com. We
look forward to seeing you at Breakfast
at Brookdale in 2010. We will be serving food for thought, food for the
body, and food for the soul. What a deal....

Communion with Old Souls, by Jane Barton, MTS, MASM

In talking with friends and colleagues, there seems to be a
universal perception that 2009 has been and continues to be an incredibly busy
year. Some folks might suggest that the accelerating passage of time has
something to do with the aging process, a suggestion I choose to ignore!
Regardless, the fast pace ultimately takes a toll on the mind, body, and spirit.
I recently heeded my own advice to others about self care and intentionally
sought time to "be" -- to savor the moment. Like so many people who live in Colorado, the best place
for me to "be" is in the mountains. So, my best friend and I packed up the car
and headed west for an incredible, awe inspiring day in the pines. Read More
