It's the Best Day Ever, Dad!
  By Brooke Shields
We were really excited to read It's The Best Day Ever, Dad!, especially after reading Shield's first book,Welcome To Your World Baby. In It's The Best Day Ever, Dad! we follow two sisters as they share a special day with dad, in a book about the importance of love and the joy of being together. When we read this book during our story hours, we loved that the 1-2 year old group were just as engaged as the 3-5 year old group. The simple language coupled with the cheery and whimsical illustrations make this book appealing to children of all ages. A perfect book to celebrate Father's Day, we found this book can be read any time of the year as all children can relate to the fantastic activities described in this fun story. The downside, dad's may feel the need to compete with the all-star father so gallantly portrayed in this book--Game on!! The Good Egg
  By Barney Saltzberg
When we read this delightful short, pop-up style board book to our "Prologue" readers (6 months- 18 months), we were thrilled with the response. The children loved pulling the tabs and helping the egg do tricks such as "Sit" and "Roll Over." Once they saw the egg crack open, the fun really began as all the kids began chirping in unisom with the 'peep-peep' chorus. The pastel soothing colors added to their interest. This is a great book to include in your child's library as it also introduces simple verbs which encourage language development. 26 BIG Things Small Hands Do
 By Coleen Paratore
StoryTime By Design recommends 26 Big Things Small Hands Do by Coleen Paratore. What an amazing book to teach children the alphabet. When we read Paratore's prose to children in the 1-2 year old group, they were mesmerized by the creative rhymes and the amazing tasks their hands can do. Not only does this book present the alphabet through vivid illustrations, it also inspires children that they can make a difference in the world and make it a better place no matter how big or small they are. We paired this book with a simple art project by having the children trace their own hands on construction paper, cut them out and then paste them on plates. We also taught them simple sign language. Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand
  By Liz and Jay Scott
With June here, we thought it would be a great time to re-introduce an inspirational book, Alex and The Amazing Lemonade Stand. Four-year-old Alex decides to host a lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Through hard work and determination, her idea eventually inspires an entire nation. Authored by Alex's parents, this book is beautifully written and illustrated. It approaches pediatric cancer on a level that the young can understand because of the sing-songy rhymes and soothing colored illustrations. Plus it reminds adults that we all can make a difference, no matter what our challenges are. We decided not to read this book during our story hours-it is personal and beautiful, to be shared in an intimate setting where you can really have a conversation with your child about how they can make a difference after reading this book. To get your child more involved and host your own lemonade stand, log onto www.alexlemonade.com. |

Loukoumi's Good Deeds Shine Bright at StoryTime
|
He is a Father, a Lawyer and a Best Selling Author!! Yet he even has time to hang out with Jennifer Aniston. Meet Nick Katsoris---creator of the Loukoumi series.
We loved reading Loukoumi's Good Deeds during our Story Hours. What inspired you to create the Loukoumi Series? As long as I can remember I have loved writing. The name Loukoumi is a Greek word meaning "sweet" and it is also a type of Greek candy, so one day I was in the kitchen and I asked my wife to please hand me the box of Loukoumi, Loukoumi - I called her Loukoumi. It just came out of my mouth. And then I thought wouldn't that make a cute name for a children's book character. So I thought Loukoumi candy is white, we have the "L" sound, how about a lamb? And Loukoumi the Lamb was born. Then when my son Dean was born in 2004 I knew that I had to follow through on this project not only for me, but also for him. Now I read the books at school and bookstores and it gives me such pleasure to spread the messages in these books to kids. The idea for Loukoumi's Good Deeds and Loukoumi's Gift came to me from a very fond memory when someone did something very nice for me. It was about 15 years ago and I was working as a law clerk for a federal judge. My appointment was for a two year term and at the end of the two years I came into work on the last day and there was a pair of beautiful gold cufflinks. About an hour later Daisy the cleaning lady came into my office and said, "Did you like my present?" and I couldn't believe it. Here was a sweet wonderful woman who didn't have a lot of money, yet she bought me a pair of gold cufflinks. I said to her, "Daisy, you didn't have to do this, why did you buy me this present?" and she responded, "Because you said 'Good Morning' to me everyday! That was the nicest thing that anyone ever did for me."This book is dedicated to Daisy for teaching me at a young age that the perfect gift comes straight from the heart. This book is also dedicated to the celebrities who donated their time to help make a difference in the lives of others.Speaking of Celebrities, what was it like working with Jennifer Aniston and her father, John Aniston? How did you get celebrities such as Olympia Dukakis and Gloria Gaynor involved? It was really a thrill for me. Jennifer came into the studio and asked me how I would like her to record the narration and I said to her, "You are the Emmy winner. You do it any way you'd like!" Jennifer and her dad John as well as all the celebrities including Olympia Dukakis, Gloria Gaynor, American Idol's Constantine Maroulis, Guiding Light star Frank Dicopoulos, CBS News Anchor Alexis Christoforous were such a pleasure to work with. And they also enjoyed working in the studio together - it was a very comfortable, enjoyable, and rewarding experience and they did the ultimate good deed for this book by donating their time to this project so that we could raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as $2 from each book is donated to St. Jude.I came to know the celebrities involved through my affiliation as President of the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund. I have run the organization for 18 years and each of these celebrities have been involved in the Hellenic Times and the Gala in some way and when I asked them to be part of the Loukoumi project the all graciously agreed and I am so grateful. How has being a father influenced your writing? It has made me so conscious that we need to instill on our kids good values and lessons to live by. That is why I try to have a lesson in each book that I write. With Loukoumi's Good Deeds the lesson is to teach kids to do something nice for others, no matter how great or small that good deed is, it can make a big difference in someone's life and it now gives me pleasure to have kids and parents telling me about all the good deeds their kids are doing after reading this book. At the storytime events I do, we have designed a craft for the kids where they can draw a picture for someone they love doing what it is they enjoy doing with that person, and then they are encouraged to give that drawing to the person they love. This gets them to think about doing nice things for others and like in the book it also shows kids that the perfect gift need not cost a lot of money but can be something from the heart like a drawing that they create. The craft page is on our website at www.Loukoumi.com.Your promotions and programs have been inspirational in helping children realize their dreams, what other promotions do you have planned? We are sponsoring our second annual Dream Day Contest. This contest is based on my last book, Growing Up With Loukoumi, which teaches kids they can be anything when they grow up if they believe in themselves. Children can enter the contest by drawing a picture of themselves in their future dream career accompanied by the statement: "I Want to be a __________ because...". Dream Day events will take place at libraries, schools, and bookstores nationwide from April 1st through December 31st 2009, with top winners living their dream career for a day. Last year's winners included witnessing a Mars landing from NASA, playing soccer with the New York Red Bulls, cooking on CBS News with chef Tony Tantillo and meeting with TV chef Rachel Ray. Contest forms for this year's Dream Day contest are on our website at www.Loukoumi.com.What lies in the future for Loukoumi?Well, we are now illustrating the fourth Loukoumi book in the series titled Loukoumi's Gift. The story is narrated by John Aniston and Jennifer Aniston plays the role of Daisy the Giraffe on the CD that comes with the current Loukoumi's Good Deed book. We have just completed a line of Loukoumi baby products as well which include blankets, towels, bibs, a plush toy and other items. They are listed on our webiste at www.Loukoumi.com as well as www.amazon.com. And we are also speaking with retailers now to carry the products. In addition, we are in discussions with several companies to turn the Loukoumi series into a cartoon series. I will enjoy taking Loukoumi on many more adventures. |

Barefoot Books Does It Right in NYC
|

Please tell us a little bit about your Company/Bookstore?
Barefoot Books creates beautiful, educational, global books and gift products for children. Our aim is to celebrate the world's diversity, encourage children's creativity and discovery. The Barefoot community is a vibrant, grassroots group of people from around the world who are all 'living barefoot' in their own unique ways.
Has the recession had an impact on your business? I think the economy has affected every business in one way or another, and we are no exception. However, we have chosen to take this time to rethink, recharge and refresh. I believe Barefoot Books offers the right product with the right message at the right time, with our emphasis on global awareness, family sharing, education and imagination. So we are now wholeheartedly embracing a community-based business model with the launch of an attractive, grassroots business opportunity for members of parents, grandparents, teachers and librarians - our Ambassador program - along with a brand new website. Check back this June and you will see some amazing changes to www.barefootbooks.com!
Is your Bookstore online or at a physical location? Has the Internet changed the scope of your business? We have always followed a fairly unconventional sales path in what is a fairly traditional industry and I think the pioneering approach is what has allowed us to succeed and get where we are today. Aside from selling our books through independent book shops, gift stores, and boutiques, we also offer our entire collection on our website www.barefootbooks.com. We also have two retail stores; one in Cambridge, MA and the other inside world-famous toy store FAO Schwarz in Manhattan. However, our most exciting and swiftly growing sales channel is our grass-roots, viral, direct-selling network. We have nearly 2000 Barefoot Ambassadors globally who are passionate about spreading the word about Barefoot in their communities and online. You can find out more about selling Barefoot in your community, local school, or online here.
What makes your New York bookstore unique? Our 1,100 square-foot bookstore upstairs in FAO Schwarz brings beautiful picture books back to the forefront in this world-famous toy store. We are excited about this innovative, synergistic partnership to promote beautiful books and imagination.
Is there a favorite series you offer? This is always a tough question! One of my personal favorite books is definitely The Gigantic Turnip which we published in 1998 and which has since been translated into 15 languages and has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide. It represents the perfect combination of outstanding, distinctive text. I also love The Animal Boogie, probably our best seller of all time in the US and UK markets, because my children came up with the idea one summer when they sang the accompanying song over and over until it hit me that this would make a great picture book. More recently, we published The Boy Who Grew Flowers, written by Jen Wojtowicz for her autistic brother and stunningly illustrated by Canadian artist, Steve Adam, which has a really warm and meaningful text which reminds us that what makes us different is what makes us wonderful.

Bea's Corner
StoryTime By Design's resident Speech and Language Pathologist, Beatrice Schreter, answers your question:
My 18 month old son is not speaking clearly yet. My pediatrician recommended he be evaluated by a Speech Pathologist. What can I expect during the evaluation? During the evaluation you can expect to be in the room with your child if it does not serve as a distraction. Your child certainly won't be required to separate from you on the initial visit, or until he/she is comfortable. Relevant background, medical and developmental information should be provided by the parent. The therapist will try to elicit, the information she needs from your child both through books and play, in an engaging, fun, child friendly context.
Beatrice Schreter is a renowned Speech and Language Pathologist with a private practice in NYC for over 14 years.

The Benefits of StoryTime By Dr. Gail Lencz

What kind of books can I read to my child to facilitate child development and good psychological health?
Books like the Berenstain Bears, Little Critter, and Rainbow Fish series are entertaining and provide enormous opportunity for early childhood learning on so many levels. That may be why children ask to hear them repeatedly.
First of all the context is that you are reading to your child. This furthers your existing parent-child bond, as you are sharing your time, your interest, and a specific story experience. By reading aloud, your nurturance is taking a form that is dovetailing with your child's developmental phase of rapid language acquisition and symbolic thinking. You and your child have ideas and reactions to the story to talk about.
These kinds of stories provide examples of conflicts, challenges, and normal questions and stimulate important discussions. Through your added commentary, you can help your child to label social and psychological experiences. You can encourage better control of the child's impulses. You will help your child develop a greater understanding of the world and family values.
