What's on the Market?
156 Van Cortlandt Park Avenue, Park Hill, Yonkers
No matter what's happening in the real estate market, I consistently get my sellers the highest price. They get more $$$ and their homes are on the market fewer days and sell closer to the listing price than other properties in Yonkers. (Based on EAMLS statistics) |

You may remember reading in an earlier issue of "Good News" that Amy Stokes of Park Hill was voted a CNN Hero for her work championing children. More HUGE congratulations to Amy on being named one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes for 2011. Many South African children are without parents due to HIV/AIDS and Amy's non-profit organization, Infinite Family, connects them with caring adult mentors via computer. For at least a half-hour each week, pairs meet face to face on what they call the Ezomndeni-net (in Zulu, Ezomndeni means "everything related to family"). Using a custom, Web-based technology, Infinite Family has so far connected almost 300 South African teens (called Net Buddies) with nearly 200 volunteer mentors from around the world. Since 2006, Infinite Family has built and operated five computer labs at partner organization sites across South Africa. In addition to providing mentors for children, the computer-driven communication of the Ezomndeni-net also develops their language and technology skills, preparing them to compete in the global marketplace. Amy was recently honored on a CNN award show hosted by Anderson Cooper and was recognized with $50,000 award to Infinite Family. You can click here to meet Amy, hear the story behind the Hero and even contribute or get involved if you'd like to. |

Start a Clean-Up Team and Plan a Clean Up! Are you concerned about the trash you see on the streets and on local trails? Have you noticed garbage or debris in the Saw Mill River and had the urge to clean it up? The Saw Mill River Coalition will help you plan your clean-up and supply all necessary materials. If your group commits to doing two or more clean-ups each year, they will give you your own picker-uppers and other helpful tools. If you, your business, school, or community group would like to form a River Stewardship Team and adopt a section of the Saw Mill River, a local street in the watershed, or any area along the Saw Mill River, contact Emily Eder at Groundwork Hudson Valley at 914-375-2151 or e-mail her.

The Saw Mill River Sees the Light of Day in Downtown Yonkers. All of the construction in Larkin Plaza has made way for the daylighting of the Saw Mill River in what used to be the parking lot in front of the DMV. The first phase of the project is complete and the river is flowing freely through its new man-made, landscaped channel, complete with a rocky waterfall. The next phase, to be completed next spring, will bring trees and flowers to the riverbanks as well as areas for musical p erformances, ecology workshops, a family reading area and wireless internet. Even in its current unfinished state, it's pretty amazing to see this wonderful new outdoor space in downtown Yonkers.
