Milwaukee Deputation to General Convention Tells All! - Part V

Report from the

Deputation of the Diocese of Milwaukee to the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church

"The gifts of God for the People of God."  BCP pp 364

The 77th General Convention affirmed that it is "normative" for people to be baptized before receiving communion.

One of the initial resolutions presented to Convention would have allowed the church's congregations to "invite all, regardless of age, denomination, or baptism to the altar for Holy Communion" by eliminating a Canon (Church law) which says "no unbaptized person shall be eligible to receive Holy Communion in this Church." In the end, the convention passed a resolution in which the Episcopal Church "reaffirm[ed] that baptism is the ancient and normative entry point to receiving Holy Communion and that our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to go into the world and baptize all peoples."

Debates and conversations focused on consideration of the importance of a message that all are welcome at Christ's table versus the importance of baptism as an important step for inclusion into God's family.

Many priests have expressed their desire to provide the option of receiving communion to all. The Rev. Anna Carmichael Meanwhile, St. Mark's Episcopal Church (Hood River, Oregon) expressed her feelings in an Episcopal News Service article, stating she will not change her practice of inviting all people to receive communion. "While I understand that as a priest I have taken a vow to uphold the rubrics of the prayer book, I feel that sometimes pastoral care and pastoral sensitivity are equally as important as our theology behind what we do," she said, adding that the Episcopal Church is always striving to extend its welcome to all people "and I hope that at some point our welcome will include unbaptized at the communion rail."

As always, feel free to contact members of the deputation to GC for additional information.

Blessings,

Carlynn Higbie, Co-Chair

Grow in Christ Through Community of Hope!

Here is an ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world.  The Community of Hope program creates a Christian community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are shaped by Benedictine spirituality, united in prayer, and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries.  Participants explore God's call in their lives through a training class where we practice a "rule of life" and learn about Pastoral Care practices.  Study topics include: Theology of Pastoral Care, Prayer, Christian Meditation, Silence, Listening Skills, Confidentiality, and much more.  This national program started in Texas in 1994 and has been taught at St Bartholomew's in Pewaukee for the past several years.

The Madison team is pleased to offer our 3rd class!  It will be held at St Luke's Madison on the third Saturdays this fall/winter from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15, January 12, and February 16 (covers two topics, lunch, and prayer service).  Applications are now available; there is a registration fee of $100.00.  For more information, conversation, or an application please contact Clifford Perkins at perkins_clifford@hotmail.com, Carol Smith at csmith@carthage.edu, or Diane Brown at diane@floods.org.

All are welcome at Julian Gathering at
St. Dunstan's, Madison on September 12th
The Madison-area Julian Gathering has been meeting each month for four and a half years; a number of people have come to see what we do and some have become 'regulars.'  We welcome everyone who is interested in learning more about contemplative spirituality in the Christian tradition.  We meet monthly for contemplative prayer, after which we discuss a reading from Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century English mystic who has been called "a theologian for our time."  These gatherings are supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich, a contemplative monastic order in the Episcopal Church.

We meet the second Wednesday of each month at 7:15 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI.  We end promptly at 9 PM.  We would love to have you join us.  If you have questions, call Susan Fiore, AOJN at (608) 845-2413 or e-mail at slfiore@mac.com

Registration for Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI) 2012-2013

As I watched the 2012 summer Olympics there was a lot of talk about team and the importance of team in success. The women's coach on the swimming team gave each athlete a tag with one side indicating the London 2012 Olympics and on the flip side their individual event.

This is not that different from Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI). We train parish teams in leadership development. We are all working toward bringing people to know God through Jesus, yet we have our own individual and community ways of doing that. Our goal is to help people ask questions, look at things in new ways and to be intentional in their planning. If you would like to be a part of our next training cycle the time is now to sign up. We have 20 seats available.

This next cycle will be the Friday - Saturday format but cycle 2 will be a Saturday - Sunday format. This new format gives us the opportunity to invite people who cannot take a Friday off and lets us experience Morning Prayer not only at DCDI but also at our home parishes if we choose. We will have training opportunities this coming year on leading Morning Prayer.

  • Our DCDI dates are: Cycle 1 begins on Nov. 1- 2, 2012; Feb. 8 - 9; April 12 - 13; June 7 - 8.
  • Cycle 2 begins on November 16 - 17, 2013; Feb. 8 - 9; April 5 - 6; May 17 - 18, 2014.

Another new opportunity will be for all those we have graduated from Diocesan CDI to meet on Saturdays from 10 until 2 to share with one another what they been working on and to practice as well as learn new theories, methods and skills. We will meet at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison while DCDI is in session and preregistration will be required.

To register for our next Cycle:

Email Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org with the following information: Name, contact information, who you will be attending with you or who has attended from your congregation, and in 25 words or less why you want to participate in this training and what you hope to learn.
