The volunteers who make the Cathedral Book Sale go!
The Fabulous Cathedral Book Sale!
Making the 2012 Cathedral book Sale a success took lots of books and lots of people -- the 70 volunteers who worked the sale, the folks who donated the books, and folks from all walks of life who bought the books!  This year's sale brought in $23,122 which is just about what last year's sale raised.  Proceeds of the sale are donated to various charities, many of them related to hunger relief.  Considering the growing popularity of e-readers and the state of the economy, the Cathedral is very pleased with this year's results!  Congratulations, Cathedral -- and thanks to all who supported the sale!

Milwaukee Deputation
to General Convention Tells All! - Part IV

Report from the Deputation of the

Diocese of Milwaukee to

the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church

We live our life together as God's people with

"faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love."

1 Corinthians 13:13

Perhaps the item of business most reported in the media was the adoption of resolution A049 - Authorize Liturgical Resources for the Blessing of Same Gender Relationships. This resolution was approved by the House of Bishops with a vote of 111 to 41, with three bishops abstaining. The following day, the House of Deputies approved the rite by 78% among the lay deputies and by 76% among the clergy deputies. The Diocese of Milwaukee deputation unanimously supported the provisional authorization of a preparation process, study materials, and a liturgy to bless the commitments of members of our church in same gender relationships to one another.

The deputation supported the movement of the Convention toward the full inclusion of all of God's people in the life of God's church. To that end, we supported the lived witness in loving, long-term relationships of same-gender couples in our communities, and supported the provisional adoption of rites to allow the blessing of those relationships. Additionally, the Convention encouraged conversations around Christian Marriage at the Church, diocesan, and parish level over the course of the next three-years. In related action, the Convention and the deputation supported the full inclusion of transgendered persons (Resolution D002 and Resolution D019) in the life and ministry of the Church, including removing any impediment to the discernment and ordination process based on gender identity or gender expression. (See links to resources later in this report.)

Grow in Christ Through Community of Hope!

Here is an ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world.  The Community of Hope program creates a Christian community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are shaped by Benedictine spirituality, united in prayer, and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries.  Participants explore God's call in their lives through a training class where we practice a "rule of life" and learn about Pastoral Care practices.  Study topics include: Theology of Pastoral Care, Prayer, Christian Meditation, Silence, Listening Skills, Confidentiality, and much more.  This national program started in Texas in 1994 and has been taught at St Bartholomew's in Pewaukee for the past several years.

The Madison team is pleased to offer our 3rd class!  It will be held at St Luke's Madison on the third Saturdays this fall/winter from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15, January 12, and February 16 (covers two topics, lunch, and prayer service).  Applications are now available; there is a registration fee of $100.00.  For more information, conversation, or an application please contact Clifford Perkins at perkins_clifford@hotmail.com, Carol Smith at csmith@carthage.edu, or Diane Brown at diane@floods.org.

Our Mission Trip Participants: Carl, Linda, Anna, and Forrest at Grace House.

Mission Trip in the Appalachian Mountains
by The Rev. Anna Doherty, Vicar at St. Aidan's, Hartford

Four people from St. Aidan's, Hartford, and St. James, West Bend returned from a week-long mission trip in the Appalachian Mountains. From August 4-11, 2012, we lived and worked at Grace House on the Mountain, near St. Paul, VA. We had a wonderful time! The mission trip was a truly transformational experience, where we got to know and to love both the people we helped and the people we worked with. The average per capita income of people in and around St. Paul, VA, is $5000 per year. We worked on much-needed home rehabilitation, and the work was accommodating to people of all skill levels. The families we served deeply appreciated however we were able to help. However, the people we served also helped us through their hospitality, generosity, and incredible faith.

The Grace House program is run through Episcopal Appalachian Ministries (EAM), and it is very well organized. Accommodations, food, materials, and work site assignments were all coordinated by EAM. We only needed to show up with open hearts and hands willing to work. EAM offers multigenerational and youth-based mission trips, and it was especially accommodating to smaller groups of people. If you are looking to plan a mission trip for your congregation, and if you think EAM might be a good fit for you, I would encourage you to check out their website at http://www.visit-eam.org/ . You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions, at 262-673-7273 or at pastoranna@staidans-hartford.org.

All are welcome at Julian Gathering at
St. Dunstan's, Madison on September 12th
The Madison-area Julian Gathering has been meeting each month for four and a half years; a number of people have come to see what we do and some have become 'regulars.'  We welcome everyone who is interested in learning more about contemplative spirituality in the Christian tradition.  We meet monthly for contemplative prayer, after which we discuss a reading from Julian of Norwich, a 14th Century English mystic who has been called "a theologian for our time."  These gatherings are supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich, a contemplative monastic order in the Episcopal Church.

We meet the second Wednesday of each month at 7:15 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI.  We end promptly at 9 PM.  We would love to have you join us.  If you have questions, call Susan Fiore, AOJN at (608) 845-2413 or e-mail at slfiore@mac.com

Registration for Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI) 2012-2013

As I watched the 2012 summer Olympics there was a lot of talk about team and the importance of team in success. The women's coach on the swimming team gave each athlete a tag with one side indicating the London 2012 Olympics and on the flip side their individual event.

This is not that different from Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI). We train parish teams in leadership development. We are all working toward bringing people to know God through Jesus, yet we have our own individual and community ways of doing that. Our goal is to help people ask questions, look at things in new ways and to be intentional in their planning. If you would like to be a part of our next training cycle the time is now to sign up. We have 20 seats available.

This next cycle will be the Friday - Saturday format but cycle 2 will be a Saturday - Sunday format. This new format gives us the opportunity to invite people who cannot take a Friday off and lets us experience Morning Prayer not only at DCDI but also at our home parishes if we choose. We will have training opportunities this coming year on leading Morning Prayer.

  • Our DCDI dates are: Cycle 1 begins on Nov. 1- 2, 2012; Feb. 8 - 9; April 12 - 13; June 7 - 8.
  • Cycle 2 begins on November 16 - 17, 2013; Feb. 8 - 9; April 5 - 6; May 17 - 18, 2014.

Another new opportunity will be for all those we have graduated from Diocesan CDI to meet on Saturdays from 10 until 2 to share with one another what they been working on and to practice as well as learn new theories, methods and skills. We will meet at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison while DCDI is in session and preregistration will be required.

To register for our next Cycle:

Email Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org with the following information: Name, contact information, who you will be attending with you or who has attended from your congregation, and in 25 words or less why you want to participate in this training and what you hope to learn.
