"Peace is God's message. . . "
A letter from The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller
in response to the Sikh temple shooting
Dear friends in Christ,
This has been a violent summer. While we were gathered at General Convention, newspaper headlines told the story of an epidemic of gun violence on the streets of Chicago. Next followed the horrific shootings at the movie in Aurora, Colorado. This past Sunday we felt the shock and sting of gun violence in our own community with the tragic shootings at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek. These senseless acts, along with countless others less sensational but no less horiffic are evidence that we live in a violent world.
Our culture glorifies violence on screens large and small, in games, movies, and on television. It has the effect of numbing us and making such violence seem normal. Even if it were, our call in Christ is to be instruments of God's peace.
Peace is God's message at the beginning of creation, at the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, and in our Lord's Easter greeting in the upper room. I invite each member of our diocese to pray and reflect on how God is calling us to be people of peace. Are there ways we participate in the culture of violence that God is calling us to set aside? Is there a mission of peace that God is calling us to join? The world won't change unless we change, or rather, are changed by God's grace more and more into the likeness of Christ.
Elsewhere in this e-newsletter are links to the work we share in with the Wisconsin Conference of Churches and the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, undertaken in response to the recent tragedy at the Sikh Temple. I hope that our congregations will participate this weekend in joining others in praying for the Sikh Community. More importantly, I ask you to continue to pray for those who mourn in the months ahead. You might want to use this prayer composed by David Simmons, our ecumenical and Interfaith officer, which draws on images of God we share with our Sikh neighbors.
Eternal God, every day you look after and behold all that you have created. Our world is engrossed in sin and evil. In the midst of the tragedy suffered by the Sikh community, we cry out to you for solace. Comfort the bereaved, heal the wounded, and move us to compassionate action to transform our communities so that they may reflect your eternal peace. Send your spirit throughout the world, that all peoples may be gathered as your children, sharing in your divine light which pervades us all. All this we pray in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of Peace. Amen.
Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

Christian Churches to Observe
Day of Prayer for Sikh Community
on Sunday, August 12
Bishop Steven Miller has asked that the following information, provided by the Wisconsin Conference of Churches (WCC), be circulated to all clergy and parishes in the Diocese of Milwaukee.
In the wake of the tragic shootings at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, the Wisconsin Council of Churches is calling for Day of Prayer for the Sikh Community in Christian congregations throughout the state next Sunday, August 12. Download a bulletin for your church.
It is hoped that next Sunday will provide an opportunity for Christians to pray for the victims, their families, and for the Sikh community, which has experienced much tragedy and hardship in this country since the Sept. 11 attacks (Sikhs are at times mistaken for Muslims). It is also hoped that next Sunday will be an occasion for Christians in Wisconsin to learn more about the Sikh religion. For more information, see (http://www.sikhs.org/summary.htm).
In the coming days and weeks there will be opportunities for Christians to stand in solidarity with the Sikh community. Two vigils were held Sunday night, in Madison and Milwaukee, and more are planned. The WCC will assist in getting the word out as events and other opportunities for support are planned; please check their website http://www.wichurches.org/.

Milwaukee Deputation to General Convention Tells All! - Part III
Report from the Deputation of the
Diocese of Milwaukee to the 77th General Convention
of the Episcopal Church
"...you can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime,
you just might find you get what you need."
Rolling Stones, 1969
Anglican Covenant
The 77th General Convention, supported by the action of our deputation, reaffirmed the commitment of the Episcopal Church to the Anglican Communion, and the support and participation of the Episcopal Church in processes of communication and mission within Communion. Having affirmed that commitment, and in the spirit of not causing undue consternation to our mission partners throughout the Anglican Communion, the Convention declined to make a formal response to the document known as the Anglican Covenant. The deputation's position was consistent with much of the conversation at the Convention regarding the document. We believed, and many discussions at the Convention confirmed, that several sections of the Covenant proposal clearly reflect our understanding of the relationship of The Episcopal Church to and within the Anglican Communion, but not all sections were consistent with our understanding of the structure and polity of the church and the communion. Rather than formally decline the proposed Covenant document, the Convention chose not to make a formal response and instead committed itself to continue in conversation and mission with other members of the Communion.
All resolutions related to the Anglican covenant were taken up by the Legislative Committee on World Mission. In his report to The House of Bishops, Bishop Ian Douglas (Diocese of Connecticut), Episcopal chairman of the World Mission Committee, stated that, "...this church holds a wide variety of ecclesiological positions and opinions on the Anglican Covenant and its position in the Anglican Communion." Bishop Douglas went on to say, "As we continued to perfect....we began to believe that we would be unable to make a positive statement that would not somehow create a significant [number] of winners and losers."

Registration for Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI) 2012-2013
As I watch the 2012 summer Olympics there is a lot of talk about team and the importance of team in success. The women's coach on the swimming team gave each athlete a tag with one side indicating the London 2012 Olympics and on the flip side their individual event.
This is not that different from Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI). We train parish teams in leadership development. We are all working toward bringing people to know God through Jesus, yet we have our own individual and community ways of doing that. Our goal is to help people ask questions, look at things in new ways and to be intentional in their planning. If you would like to be a part of our next training cycle the time is now to sign up. We have 20 seats available.
This next cycle will be the Friday - Saturday format but cycle 2 will be a Saturday - Sunday format. This new format gives us the opportunity to invite people who cannot take a Friday off and lets us experience Morning Prayer not only at DCDI but also at our home parishes if we choose. We will have training opportunities this coming year on leading Morning Prayer.
- Our DCDI dates are: Cycle 1 begins on Nov. 1- 2, 2012; Feb. 8 - 9; April 12 - 13; June 7 - 8.
- Cycle 2 begins on November 16 - 17, 2013; Feb. 8 - 9; April 5 - 6; May 17 - 18, 2014.
Another new opportunity will be for all those we have graduated from Diocesan CDI to meet on Saturdays from 10 until 2 to share with one another what they been working on and to practice as well as learn new theories, methods and skills. We will meet at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison while DCDI is in session and preregistration will be required.
To register for our next Cycle:
Email Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org with the following information: Name, contact information, who you will be attending with you or who has attended from your congregation, and in 25 words or less why you want to participate in this training and what you hope to learn.
