Bishop Miller and Deputies Prepare for General Convention

As deputies, "we are trusted by our diocese and by the deputies from other dioceses to be informed and to prepare ourselves through study and prayer prior to General Convention. While at General Convention, we are charged to listen to other deputies, bishops and guests; to share our own thoughts and ideas; and to attend and vote at all legislative sessions. We are trusted to cast our votes informed by prayer, factual information, and the workings of the Holy Spirit."  Bonnie Anderson, DD, President of the House of Deputies

Bishop Miller at Province V Pre-GC meeting

Bishop Miller and several members of our deputation to General Convention attended Province V Synod and Pre-General Convention Meeting held in Chicago last week. The two day meeting included presentations by our Presiding Bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori and Bonnie Anderson, President of the House of Deputies.

In addition to providing time for Synod members to gather for a business meeting, the meeting also included an orientation to General Convention and updates on a number of topics that will be part of the Conversation at 2012 Convention in Indianapolis this July.

Rest in Peace Anna Marie Calland
(Lay Deputy to 1970 General Convention)

On May 5th a memorial service was held at St. Paul's, Beloit for life-long member Anna Marie Calland, deceased at age 93.  This is particularly memorable at this time, as we prepare for the 2012 General Convention, because Anna was one of the first 29 women nationawide elected to serve as deputies at the 1970 General Convention. This was just one of the many, many ways in which she served the Episcopal Church, at the parish, diocesan and national levels.  May she rest in peace.

Trinity Church, Wauwatosa
Celebrates 125th Anniversary

This year Trinity Church Wauwatosa will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Celebration activities are planned throughout the year to commemorate this milestone. We hope you will join us through your prayers of thanksgiving as well as participation in the events we have planned.

The actual anniversary date, April 4th, was in the midst of Holy Week this year. This special date was acknowledged with an evening Eucharist on that day.

Through a special gift from a Trinity parishioner, a song has been commissioned for Trinity. This lovely gift has made it possible to have a song designed to celebrate the blessings of the Trinity community and capture the essence of Trinity's mission and ministry. This special hymn will be sung at the celebratory Eucharist on June 3, 2012 and at all special Trinity occasions.

The main celebration will be through two events Trinity Sunday weekend, June 2nd and 3rd. On Saturday June 2nd, the Anniversary Committee will host a gala dinner. Plans for the dinner include music, and entertainment.

On Trinity Sunday, June 3rd, a celebratory Eucharist will be held at 9:30AM. Following the service there will be guided tours at various points of interest throughout the church and grounds along with an ice cream social in the Welcome Garden. Tours of the church, with docent's present, will highlight architectural features of the church, the organ and interesting stories of our renovation history.

The year-long observance of our 125th Anniversary will culminate with the Bishop's visit on November 4th. This day will include a celebratory Eucharist giving thanks for 125 years of Grace upon Grace withprayers of thanksgiving for all that has brought us to this time and for continued blessings as we move forward into ministries that will build the body of Christ. There will be a reception in the parish hall following this service.

We invite our friends and family from throughout the diocese to join us for any and all of our celebration activities. Please call our parish office (414-453-4540) for details and reservations for the Anniversary Dinner on June 2, 2012

Ascension Day Mass at West Allis

Ascension Day Jazz Mass on Wednesday May 16 at 7:00pm

St. Peter's Episcopal Church 7929 W. Lincoln Avenue, West Allis 53219

Please join our community as we gather together to celebrate our Lord's Ascension and experience its power within our individual hearts and minds.

In the Ascension, the humanity of Jesus is taken into the heart of God. In that image we also see humanity - as a whole - taken up into God's heart. This has profound implications for each of us. We learn what it means to be a Christian. Moreover, we learn what it means to be fully human. Through this vision we begin to perceive our real value to God.

We regret that Music Director, Ed Doemland, will not be able to lead a special Jazz arrangement as previously announced due to illness.

Misconduct Prevention Training  offered at Trinity, Wauwatosa

Safeguarding God's Children; Preventing Child Sexual Abuse is a program used throughout the Episcopal Church to train parents, clergy, lay employees and church volunteers in understanding the steps parish communities should take in order to make our church safe for our children.

Our Diocesan Misconduct Prevention Policy requires that this training be completed by all clergy, all vestry members, all lay employees who work with children or supervise adults who work with children, as well as all volunteers who regularly work with children or youth. The training is highly recommended for Sunday school teachers.  Training opportunities will be offered twice this spring at Trinity Church, Wauwatosa.

  • Sunday May 20th
  • Sunday June 17th

Both trainings will be held in the Trinity parish hall and will begin at 11:45 AM. If you are interested in participating you may call the Trinity office, 414-453-4540, to make a reservation.

WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?

A Note from the Commission on Global Reconciliation

Each year our diocese allocates 0.7% of the diocesan budget to support work done to achieve MDGs by parishes and entities within the diocese.    The Eight Millennial Development Goals are

  1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER
  2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
  3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
  4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
  5. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH6.
  6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES
  7. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
  8. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Last year, contributions were sent to 5 projects that are supported by congregations within our diocese. It's time again to consider distribution of the 0.7% to projects that work toward the achievement of the MDGs.

If your congregation is involved in such a project, you may apply for additional funding from the diocese. Applications are due July 1, 2012. For more information, please see our "Letter to Parishes" on the Diocesan website or contact: Deacon Carol Smith at 608-230-6888 or csmith@carthage.edu

Funding needed for Companion Diocese HIV/Aids Seminar

The second HIV/Aids seminar at St. Mary's Cathedral in our Companion Diocese of Newala Tanzania is in planning and will be held when funding allows. It has as its foundation the success of last October's seminar. The current plan calls for:

1.) a Refresher Course for the trainers (four in each Archdeaconry)

2.) Public Meetings in the six Archdeaconries (3-5 parishes in each.)

3.) Training for the HIV/Aids Diocesan Co-coordinator.

4.) Aids Diagnostic equipment .

The meetings will involve the four trainers from each Archdeaconry, church councilors from each parish and six members from other denominations !! This will involve some 565 people who will then address their fellow worshipers during their normal services!! The new equipment will allow more on-site testing and education.

"Aids in that part of Africa...ain't it awful, but what can we do?" One answer is to become involved in the support of this truly "grass roots" battle in Newala, Tanzania !! PLEASE...checks made out to the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee with Newala HIV/Aids Seminar in the notation line. That is 804 E Juneau, Milwaukee WI 53202. For more information and/or a copy of the proposal you may contact Neil Radtke of the Companion Diocese Committee at njradtke@wi.rr.com

Meachem Grant Funds Music Program at Resurrection, Mukwonago

Thanks to a grant from the Meachem Fund, The Church of the Resurrection in Mukwonago was able to hire a professional church musician for the first time in December. Since her arrival, she has added piano and guitar to the instrumental repertoire, invited young musicians to play during worship, added a music component to the Sunday School, and formed the first choir in Resurrection's fifteen-year history. The group (pictured) sang for the first time on Sunday, April 22nd.

The renewed music program has energized our worship and created opportunities for ministry, but most importantly it has led us to praise God with a joyful noise. We are grateful to God for this gift, and to the Commission on Mission and Development for the grant that made it possible.
