WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?

A Note from the Commission on Global Reconciliation

Each year our diocese allocates 0.7% of the diocesan budget to support work done to achieve MDGs by parishes and entities within the diocese.    The Eight Millennial Development Goals are

  1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER
  2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION
  3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN
  4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY
  5. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH6.
  6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES
  7. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT
  8. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Last year, contributions were sent to 5 projects that are supported by congregations within our diocese. It's time again to consider distribution of the 0.7% to projects that work toward the achievement of the MDGs.

If your congregation is involved in such a project, you may apply for additional funding from the diocese. Applications are due July 1, 2012. For more information, please see our "Letter to Parishes" on the Diocesan website or contact: Deacon Carol Smith at 608-230-6888 or csmith@carthage.edu

Julian of Norwich Gathering

Julian Gathering on May 9, 7:15 - 9:00 PM

St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church

6205 University Avenue, Madison, WI  53705

Julian of Norwich, ca.1342 - 1426, lived in terrible times: the Black Death (bubonic plague) and repeated famines ravaged the English population; Lollards (then considered heretics) were burned at the stake just outside Norwich; the Hundred Years War with France, the Peasants' Revolt in 1381 and other civil strife meant continual warfare and conflict.  Many people and even the Church believed that God was punishing them.  How could anyone who lived at the time believe in the unconditional love of God?

"In a medieval church which emphasized God's condemning wrath, Julian wrote, 'There is no wrath in God....It is the most impossible thing that can be that God would be angry, for wrath and friendship are two opposites.'"  (from the Order of Julian of Norwich website: http://www.orderofjulian.org/julian_of_norwich.html

Join us in reading and discussing Julian's "Revelations of Divine Love" and practicing contemplative prayer together.  Our next meeting is May 8 (Julian's Feast Day!)  For more information, contact Susan Fiore, AOJN: slfiore@mac.com; (608) 845-2413

St. James Episcopal Church is seeking a motivated leader to shape our music program. This is a part-time position (10-12 hours per week). The minister will lead the music celebration during our 10:00 a.m. Sunday Service. There is an opportunity to develop the program with new ideas! • Adaptability to different musical genres
  • Willingness to learn, or have knowledge of, Episcopal liturgy and its nuances
  • Knowledge of contemporary and traditional liturgical music

To be considered for this rewarding opportunity send resume with names of your five favorite liturgical music selections (including composer names) to Rev. Lisa A. Saunders at revlisasaunders@gmail.com .

Windy Hill Brass Quintet at
Church of Holy Communion
in Lake Geneva

On Saturday, May 5th, at 7:30 pm, the Broad Street concert Series of Holy Communion Episcopal Church, 320 Broad Street, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, will present the Windy Hill Brass Quintet, from UW-Waukesha, in a program entitled "Brass Bands and Brahms."  The program will include selections from the 11 Chorale Preludes of Brahms, Brahms' Intermezzo arranged for brass and the lied "Wie Melodien zieht es mir".  A very different sound from approximately the same time frame will be tunes from  G.W.E. Friedrich's American Brass Band Journal, which was published in the mid 19th century.

The group is about 4 years old. "It's a way to take UW-Waukesha out to the community," says Craig Hurst, director. Hurst has been director of bands at the university since 1993.Between tunes, members of the group enjoy talking to the audience.

The quintet enjoys playing in churches. "The brass sounds really good in churches," says Hurst. Holy Communion Episcopal Church is proud to present the group and asks you to join them on May 5th. A reception will follow the concert.

Funding needed for Companion Diocese HIV/Aids Seminar

The second HIV/Aids seminar at St. Mary's Cathedral in our Companion Diocese of Newala Tanzania is in planning and will be held when funding allows. It has as its foundation the success of last October's seminar. The current plan calls for:

1.) a Refresher Course for the trainers (four in each Archdeaconry)

2.) Public Meetings in the six Archdeaconries (3-5 parishes in each.)

3.) Training for the HIV/Aids Diocesan Co-coordinator.

4.) Aids Diagnostic equipment .

The meetings will involve the four trainers from each Archdeaconry, church councilors from each parish and six members from other denominations !! This will involve some 565 people who will then address their fellow worshipers during their normal services!! The new equipment will allow more on-site testing and education.

"Aids in that part of Africa...ain't it awful, but what can we do?" One answer is to become involved in the support of this truly "grass roots" battle in Newala, Tanzania !! PLEASE...checks made out to the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee with Newala HIV/Aids Seminar in the notation line. That is 804 E Juneau, Milwaukee WI 53202. For more information and/or a copy of the proposal you may contact Neil Radtke of the Companion Diocese Committee at njradtke@wi.rr.com

Meachem Grant Funds Music Program at Resurrection, Mukwonago

Thanks to a grant from the Meachem Fund, The Church of the Resurrection in Mukwonago was able to hire a professional church musician for the first time in December. Since her arrival, she has added piano and guitar to the instrumental repertoire, invited young musicians to play during worship, added a music component to the Sunday School, and formed the first choir in Resurrection's fifteen-year history. The group (pictured) sang for the first time on Sunday, April 22nd.

The renewed music program has energized our worship and created opportunities for ministry, but most importantly it has led us to praise God with a joyful noise. We are grateful to God for this gift, and to the Commission on Mission and Development for the grant that made it possible.

       Third Annual

Interfaith Day at Miller Park

  JULY 17, 2012

Save the date - Tuesday, July 17 - and come with your family, friends, congregation, faith community, school or other organization for a celebratory evening at Miller Park with the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee.

Donate food for the Hunger Task Force, wear "Going to Bat for a Better World" t-shirts and see an exciting Brewers-Cardinals game.

For the past two years, we also have been given the honor of having one of our participants throw a symbolic first pitch on the playing field before the game.  If we sell enough tickets to qualify for that again, we'll conduct a drawing and let a lucky boy or girl have the thrill of pitching from the mound to a Brewers catcher.

The Interfaith Conference handles all ticket and t-shirt sales online for individuals or groups. There's no hassle for you. More details will follow soon.

Beginning in Lent and continuing through May 25, donors have the opportunity to make their dollars go even further toward fighting malaria in Africa.  During this period, any donation made to the NetsforLife Inspiration Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $430,000, thanks to a group of generous Episcopal Relief & Development donors.  This means nearly $1 million will be raised to fight malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, through the NetsforLife program partnership.

Any size gift to the NetsforLife Inspiration Fund - online, by mail or by phone - will be matched in full until May 25, or as long as matching funds are available.  We encourage donors to also consider taking advantage of company matching programs as well.

Episcopal Relief & Development is the international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church and an independent 501(c)(3) organization.
