St. Barnabas, Richland Center one of 4 rotating sites of homeless shelter

[Editor's Note: St. Barnabas, Richland Center is one of four churches in Richland County that serve as the rotating site for Lydia's House, a new emergency shelter for homeless people in Richland County. Like many parishes in our diocese, St. Barnabas does not have the members to take on a ministry like this on its own. Partnering with other area churches expands the ministry possibilities for everyone.]
Media Release for Lydia's House January 18, 2012
The New Year brought a new ministry to Richland County. On January 2nd the Richland County Ministerial Association, RCMA, launched an emergency homeless shelter called Lydia's House. The statistics that many have seen about homelessness in southwest Wisconsin have become more than just numbers on a page as the shelter has already had consistent occupancy. The shelter is set-up to provide emergency temporary shelter for families, of any configuration, during the coldest months of the year. Homeless persons, those with no place to stay out of the elements for the night, will be provided with a warm place to sleep between 6:00 pm and 8:00 am, Monday through Friday nights, until April 13. Though there is a preference shown to families, single individuals are considered for residency on a case-by-case basis.
This ministry has been made a reality by the combined efforts of more than a dozen congregations in Richland County. Those congregations represent the full theological spectrum of Christians in Richland County. All of these congregations believe that the causes and effects of homelessness are not conservative or liberal issues. We all recognize that faith must be manifested in action. "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill', and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead."(James 2, NRSV)
Lydia's house is a mobile shelter currently moving between four church buildings in Richland Center. Those churches are Peace United Methodist Church, St Barnabas Episcopal Church, Grace Community Church, and Trinity United Methodist Church. If you would like to know the current location of the shelter you can visit the website www.lydias-house.org or call (608) 475-4242. There is also a recorded message with information about Lydia's House available at (608) 649-6003.
Lydia's house has been great success so far with regards to financial gifts and willing volunteers, but both of those resources are an ongoing need. If you would like to contribute your time, your finances, or items for donation please contact Lydia's House through the website or by calling. All are invited to participate in this shelter to care for the homeless persons in our community. |

Remarking on his Visitation to St. Mark's, Beaver Dam on January 22nd, Bishop Miller said "This parish really 'gets' hospitality; you can feel it the moment you walk in the door -- the warmth and the welcome. It has become a part of the parish and it is immediately apparent to all who visit."
Note to parishes: We would love to include a photo/story on your parish's Visitation! Send to info@diomil.org . |
Clergy: Please save these Meeting dates!
Based upon feedback from a survey clergy took last fall, the Clergy Day planning committee, working with the bishop's office, has decided to try meetings for clergy in smaller groups based loosely around the diocese's convocational structure. Meetings will be about 3 hours long. Clergy who normally take a Monday sabbath are asked to make alternate arrangements, as needed, so that they can participate in their small group clergy meeting. Further details, times, and locations will be forthcoming pending a meeting of the clergy day planning committee at the end of this week. For now, clergy are asked to note their meeting and save the date!

Diocese reclaims Elm Grove property on January 31
Bishop Miller to celebrate at service there
on February 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Bishop Miller will celebrate and preach at St. Edmund's on Sunday, February 5, in the context of a service of thanksgiving for the return of the property. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will be followed by refreshments, and a presentation by Thomas Scrivner, Esq., of the law firm Michael, Best and Freidrich, who directed the litigation on behalf of the diocese. All members and friends of the Diocese of Milwaukee are invited to attend both the service and the presentation.
Following the late December decision of the Waukesha County Circuit Court, and subsequent negotiations, the real estate and real property at St. Edmund's Church will be returned to the control and use of the Episcopal Church on January 31, 2012. A discernment process is already underway with regard to the best use of the property for the mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee. Since the Diocese has not had access to the property for more than three years, an assessment process must be undertaken to ascertain the state of the facility and its contents, and clarification is still needed as to what financial assets are available to support the ongoing maintenance of the buildings. A building manager will be retained to insure that the buildings are kept both functional and in good shape. There is no thought, plan, or intention, on the part of Bishop Miller and the elected leadership of the Diocese of Milwaukee to sell the property at this, or any foreseeable, time.
Following the February 5 service, regular worship at the site will be discontinued for a period of time while plans are formulated for the ongoing use of the buildings as part of the mission of the Diocese of Milwaukee and the Episcopal Church. While there will be no regular Sunday services at the location for the time being, Bishop Miller has made clear that any former member of St. Edmund's Episcopal Church who dies during this time, is certainly welcome to have their funeral at the church, and to have their ashes interred in the Memorial Garden there, if they wish.

Website Redevelopment
Over the next three months the diocesan website will be undergoing a thorough review and appraisal of its effectiveness as a communication channel and mission resource, and of how it can be redeveloped to better serve the mission and ministries of the Diocese of Milwaukee.
David Skidmore, former communication director for the Diocese of Chicago, has been retained as a consultant to lead this project which will be conducted in three phases: research and review of the present website and user experience, analysis of the research and planning solutions, and report and recommendations to the diocesan office for implementation.
The first phase will include interviews with diocesan staff, officers, and leaders of congregations, ministries and organizations; and a survey of user experiences and expectations. The second phase will deal with analysis of the research, and exploration of various hosting and design solutions by the consultant and a small task force. The project will wrap up soon after Easter with a report to Bishop Millerand the Executive Council detailing the specific solution that supports the purpose and vision for web communication in the Diocese of Milwaukee, and how the website can be best managed and maintained going forward.
The input of all interested members of the diocese is important to the successful outcome of this effort. All members of the diocese are invited to complete an online survey which can be accessed from the diocesan website here or at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BVQSRBF . The survey may also be printed out for completion by those without internet access by downloading the pdf file at

In addition to web development consultation, he creates visual essays at WordwithImage, and serves as chair of communication for Province V and as Province V representative on the Episcopal News Service advisory committee. |

Julian Gathering set for
Feb. 8th at St. Dunstan's
What is a Julian Gathering? A Julian Gathering is open to everyone and you are welcome at all times. We support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality. These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org) and have the quintessentially Anglican writings of Bl. Mother Julian of Norwich at their core. They are for all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Bl. Julian's revelations. Don't worry if you've never practiced silent prayer before, we can set your mind at ease. We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 8. For additional information, contact Susan Fiore: (608) 845-2413 or slfiore@mac.com.
