Diocese reclaims Elm Grove property on January 31
Bishop Miller to celebrate at service there
on February 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Bishop Miller will celebrate and preach at St. Edmund's on Sunday, February 5, in the context of a service of thanksgiving for the return of the property. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will be followed by refreshments, and a presentation by Thomas Scrivner, Esq., of the law firm Michael, Best and Freidrich, who directed the litigation on behalf of the diocese. All members and friends of the Diocese of Milwaukee are invited to attend both the service and the presentation.
Following the late December decision of the Waukesha County Circuit Court, and subsequent negotiations, the real estate and real property at St. Edmund's Church will be returned to the control and use of the Episcopal Church on January 31, 2012. A discernment process is already underway with regard to the best use of the property for the mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee. Since the Diocese has not had access to the property for more than three years, an assessment process must be undertaken to ascertain the state of the facility and its contents, and clarification is still needed as to what financial assets are available to support the ongoing maintenance of the buildings. A building manager will be retained to insure that the buildings are kept both functional and in good shape. There is no thought, plan, or intention, on the part of Bishop Miller and the elected leadership of the Diocese of Milwaukee to sell the property at this, or any foreseeable, time.
Following the February 5 service, regular worship at the site will be discontinued for a period of time while plans are formulated for the ongoing use of the buildings as part of the mission of the Diocese of Milwaukee and the Episcopal Church. While there will be no regular Sunday services at the location for the time being, Bishop Miller has made clear that any former member of St. Edmund's Episcopal Church who dies during this time, is certainly welcome to have their funeral at the church, and to have their ashes interred in the Memorial Garden there, if they wish.

Reasons for Celebration at St. Anskar's
 |
Confirmation Class at St.. Anskar's, Hartland
Back Row: Sam French, Janie French, John french, Sam Berglin, Bishop Miller
Front Row: Fr. Peter Floyd, Kate French, Claire McKinnon, Breck Heller, Riley Webster, Kirsten Bay |
When Bishop Miller made his Visitation to St. Anskar's, Hartland on January 15th, the parish presented a confirmation class for the first time in several years. That was one reason to celebrate; the fine young people who made up the confirmation class was certainly another. As their surnames indicate, four members of the confirmation class are from the same family: Sam, Janie and John French (triplets) and their sister, Kate French. Fr. Floyd noted that Kirsten Bay and her family are actually members at St. John's Chrysostom in Delafield; Kirsten joined the class at St. Anskar's so she could be part of a larger group. As infants, Kirsten and fellow-confirmand Riley Webster were baptized together by Fr. Charles Henery at St. John's. "I think it was a joy for their parents to see them confirmed together, as well," said Fr. Floyd. |
Website Redevelopment
Over the next three months the diocesan website will be undergoing a thorough review and appraisal of its effectiveness as a communication channel and mission resource, and of how it can be redeveloped to better serve the mission and ministries of the Diocese of Milwaukee.
David Skidmore, former communication director for the Diocese of Chicago, has been retained as a consultant to lead this project which will be conducted in three phases: research and review of the present website and user experience, analysis of the research and planning solutions, and report and recommendations to the diocesan office for implementation.
The first phase will include interviews with diocesan staff, officers, and leaders of congregations, ministries and organizations; and a survey of user experiences and expectations. The second phase will deal with analysis of the research, and exploration of various hosting and design solutions by the consultant and a small task force. The project will wrap up soon after Easter with a report to Bishop Millerand the Executive Council detailing the specific solution that supports the purpose and vision for web communication in the Diocese of Milwaukee, and how the website can be best managed and maintained going forward.
The input of all interested members of the diocese is important to the successful outcome of this effort. All members of the diocese are invited to complete an online survey which can be accessed from the diocesan website here or at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BVQSRBF . The survey may also be printed out for completion by those without internet access by downloading the pdf file at

Julian Gathering set for
Feb. 8th at St. Dunstan's
What is a Julian Gathering? A Julian Gathering is open to everyone and you are welcome at all times. We support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality. These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org) and have the quintessentially Anglican writings of Bl. Mother Julian of Norwich at their core. They are for all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Bl. Julian's revelations. Don't worry if you've never practiced silent prayer before, we can set your mind at ease. We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 8. For additional information, contact Susan Fiore: (608) 845-2413 or slfiore@mac.com.

Lenten Resources from Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD)
As Lent once again draws near, it presents an opportunity for the Church to reflect and consider how we might follow Christ in healing a hurting world. To assist your congregation in preparing for the season, we would like to remind you about Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday and our 2012 Lenten Meditations.
At the 2009 General Convention, Lent was officially named as a time to encourage all Episcopalians to remember and support Episcopal Relief & Development's life-saving work. We invite your congregation to join together on February 26, or another convenient Sunday during the season, to pray for those who are suffering worldwide and to designate a special offering toward our mission. |

See Award-Winning Documentary
"Pray the Devil Back to Hell"
at St. Martin's, Brown Deer
At a time when women across the ocean are standing up and protesting the hardships thrust upon them by their governments, the model they could very well be following is that of Liberian women.
"Pray the Devil Back to Hell" is the astonishing story of the Liberian women who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor in the midst of a brutal civil war, and won a once unimaginable peace for their shattered country in 2003. As the rebel noose tightened around the capital city of Monrovia, thousands of women -- ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim -- formed a thin but unshakeable line between the opposing forces. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they literally faced down the killers who had turned Liberia into hell on earth. "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" is a compelling example of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations. This video was part of a five-part series on PBS entitled "Women War & Peace" that spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones.
This brief 72-minute video will b e shown on Sunday, February 12 at 12:30 pm at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 8401 N. 60th Street, Brown Deer, WI 53223. A light lunch will be served prior to viewing for those attending. Please call St. Martin's at (414) 354-4249 and leave your name to reserve your place at this event e-mail your plans to attend to hornke@wi.rr.com . All are welcome!
