Lenten Resources from Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD)

As Lent once again draws near, it presents an opportunity for the Church to reflect and consider how we might follow Christ in healing a hurting world. To assist your congregation in preparing for the season, we would like to remind you about Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday and our 2012 Lenten Meditations.

At the 2009 General Convention, Lent was officially named as a time to encourage all Episcopalians to remember and support Episcopal Relief & Development's life-saving work. We invite your congregation to join together on February 26, or another convenient Sunday during the season, to pray for those who are suffering worldwide and to designate a special offering toward our mission.

"Pray the Devil Back to Hell"

  at St. Martin's, Brown Deer

At a time when women across the ocean are standing up and protesting the hardships thrust upon them by their governments, the model they could very well be following is that of Liberian women.

"Pray the Devil Back to Hell" is the astonishing story of the Liberian women who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor in the midst of a brutal civil war, and won a once unimaginable peace for their shattered country in 2003.  As the rebel noose tightened around the capital city of Monrovia, thousands of women -- ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim -- formed a thin but unshakeable line between the opposing forces.  Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they literally faced down the killers who had turned Liberia into hell on earth.  "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" is a compelling example of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.   This video was part of a five-part series on PBS entitled "Women War & Peace" that spotlights the stories of women in conflict zones.

This brief 72-minute video will be shown on Sunday, February 12 at 12:30 pm at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 8401 N. 60th Street, Brown Deer, WI 53223.  A light lunch will be served prior to viewing for those attending.  Please call St. Martin's at (414) 354-4249 and leave your name to reserve your place at this event e-mail your plans to attend to [email protected] .   All are welcome!

All Saints' Cathedral Offers Seminar: "Living Without Fear - A Christian Response to Violence"

MILWAUKEE, WI - The Cathedral Church of All Saints will offer a day-long seminar on Saturday, January 14, 2012, "Living Without Fear - A Christian Response to Violence." The event will kick off a year-long exploration of the causes of violence in the local community and in society as a whole.

This event, and those that will follow it over the course of 2012, was inspired by the State of Wisconsin's legalization of the concealed possession of a firearm. The law has generated conversation in Milwaukee area churches as to what a Christian response should be. At last fall's annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, a resolution passed urging all Episcopal churches in the diocese to post signs stating that concealed weapons would not be allowed on the premises.

The Very Rev. Kevin C. Carroll, Dean of All Saints' Cathedral, was not content to leave the dialogue there. "We believe that the passing of this law begs larger questions," Carroll suggests. "We should be asking, Why are people so fearful that they feel a law like this needs to be passed? What are the moral and ethical implications of being a Christian in a violent society? How can we raise awareness about these issues? And, what is an appropriate call to action?"

"Living Without Fear" will feature workshops on racism and domestic violence, and speakers from the Milwaukee community who deal with these issues. The day will conclude with an ecumenical prayer service for peace and justice.

Featured presenters are Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Paul Dedinsky, The Rev. Joanne Skidmore of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Burlington, Lutheran Human Relations Association Executive Directory Marilyn Miller, Running Rebels Executive Assistant Mike Peeples, The Rev. Ken Wheeler of Milwaukee's Cross Lutheran Church, restorative justice consultant and ethnomathematician Dr. Gloria Gilmer, and Rev. Karen Hagen of Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee.

For more information, or to register for the seminar (at a nominal cost of $5 per attendee), visit www.ascathedral.org/livingwithoutfear.htm, or call 414.271.7719. Space is limited to the first 100 paid registrations.

Program: The Lenten Journey is generally considered a time for sober reflection as one prepares to observe the sacrificial death of Jesus, thus Lenten sermons that are generally reflective rather than celebrative. As we journey once again to the Cross of Calvary, in the midst of life's challenges, the people of God can be transformed by the good news of Lent that offers an opportunity for celebrating the incarnate love of God in Jesus Christ.  This workshop will look specifically at the gospel texts for Lent and Holy Week for the specific purpose of finding transformative good news for preaching: The Profit in Shame; The Joy in Being Foolish; and The Glory in Trouble.
