Haiti Project request to clergy in charge of Diocese of Milwaukee parishes
 |
|
For twenty-five years, the Haiti Project has been blessed to have the support of so many wonderful people and parishes in this diocese. Since the Clergy Day presentation about St. Marc's, Jeannette and the partnership the DioMil has with St. Marc's through the Haiti Project, we've gotten wonderful feedback from parishes about work you are doing to meet some of the needs of St. Marc's ... and to enable their dreams for the future.
We would like to ask if your parish has done any fundraising over the last several months that you might share with us what the funds are going to (general use or a project outlines in the Clergy Day packet we mailed out or something else). We'd love to be able to celebrate your parish's generosity and outreach with Wisnel while he is here. If you tell us how much money you raised and which project it is for we can announce those amounts at each of Wisnel's public appearances next week.
Please email any information you can to me at: elizabeth@haitiproject.org
Thank you so much. Everything we do makes a difference.

All Saints' Cathedral Offers Seminar: "Living Without Fear - A Christian Response to Violence"
MILWAUKEE, WI - The Cathedral Church of All Saints will offer a day-long seminar on Saturday, January 14, 2012, "Living Without Fear - A Christian Response to Violence." The event will kick off a year-long exploration of the causes of violence in the local community and in society as a whole.
This event, and those that will follow it over the course of 2012, was inspired by the State of Wisconsin's legalization of the concealed possession of a firearm. The law has generated conversation in Milwaukee area churches as to what a Christian response should be. At last fall's annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, a resolution passed urging all Episcopal churches in the diocese to post signs stating that concealed weapons would not be allowed on the premises.
The Very Rev. Kevin C. Carroll, Dean of All Saints' Cathedral, was not content to leave the dialogue there. "We believe that the passing of this law begs larger questions," Carroll suggests. "We should be asking, Why are people so fearful that they feel a law like this needs to be passed? What are the moral and ethical implications of being a Christian in a violent society? How can we raise awareness about these issues? And, what is an appropriate call to action?"
"Living Without Fear" will feature workshops on racism and domestic violence, and speakers from the Milwaukee community who deal with these issues. The day will conclude with an ecumenical prayer service for peace and justice.
Featured presenters are Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Paul Dedinsky, The Rev. Joanne Skidmore of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Burlington, Lutheran Human Relations Association Executive Directory Marilyn Miller, Running Rebels Executive Assistant Mike Peeples, The Rev. Ken Wheeler of Milwaukee's Cross Lutheran Church, restorative justice consultant and ethnomathematician Dr. Gloria Gilmer, and Rev. Karen Hagen of Tippecanoe Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee.
For more information, or to register for the seminar (at a nominal cost of $5 per attendee), visit www.ascathedral.org/livingwithoutfear.htm, or call 414.271.7719. Space is limited to the first 100 paid registrations.

Racine Hospitality Center provides a starting point for jobless
 |
Kevin Stewart helps Tony Simmons on Thursday with his first meal at the Hospitality Center at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Racine. |
This article appeared in the Jan. 2, 2012 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Ruben Ramon believes this is the year he will finally land a job.
Not too long ago, Ramon had all but given up. "My unemployment ran out and everything got bad," said the laid-off factory worker, who could no longer afford to keep a roof over his head. "I ended up sleeping out at the lake."
Feeling alone and isolated, Ramon heard about a new gathering spot for people in his situation. He took a chance, ventured out and his world opened up.
"People here are very friendly," Ramon said late last week, standing amid a sea of smiling faces offering encouraging words at Racine's Hospitality Center. The day center, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church's fellowship hall, gives the homeless and near-homeless a warm and safe refuge from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
"We are here for socialization, so no one is alone," said Kevin Stewart, who runs the center. "It's all about establishing relationships. We have done that from Day One."
Since the center opened in May, more than 3,500 homeless people have been offered the continuous assurance that others in the community care, he said.

As we journey once again to the Cross of Calvary, in the midst of life's challenges, the people of God can be transformed by the good news of Lent that offers an opportunity for celebrating the incarnate love of God in Jesus Christ. This workshop will look specifically at the gospel texts for Lent and Holy Week for the specific purpose of finding transformative good news for preaching: The Profit in Shame; The Joy in Being Foolish; and The Glory in Trouble.

Julian of Norwich Gathering on January 11th St. Julian of Norwich: 14th Century feminist? 14th Century heretic? No, although a reader might at first think so. 14th Century psychologist? Sort of . . . she understood the human heart and, through her sixteen revelations of Jesus, she understood the heart of God. Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time." Come to one of our monthly meetings and find out why -- and learn about contemplative prayer. We'd love to see you.

January at The DeKoven Center
DeKoven's Second Tuesday series will inaugurate the New Year on January 10th with a lively "Metaphysical Potpourri," presented by the Rev. Travis Du Priest. The morning begins with coffee and conversation at 10:00, and the program follows at 10:30 in the Library of elegant, historic Taylor Hall, which will still be beautifully decorated for Christmas. Everyone is cordially invited!
"This will be something different and fun for a snowy winter morning," Travis promises. The presentation will be interactive, he says, with everyone having a chance to draw names and titles from a basketful of English and American metaphysical poems (16th and 17th centuries). Fr. DuPriest will read the poems as they are drawn and lead the group in a "refresher/discussion" for poets he has already introduced at previous Second Tuesdays or in a brief "intro/discussion" for poets we are meeting for the first time.
Each time Travis's presentations of these poets is thoroughly engaging. He introduces them as friends to friends, and lets the beauty of their verse work its own magic. "You'll be amazed," he says, "at the variety of subjects, word-play, and spirited insight from these old and new poetic friends."
There will be wisdom aplenty in that basketful! We hope many will join us for this delightful and leisurely respite after the holiday rush. |
