To all of you, from the Bishop and staff of the Diocese of Milwaukee, our very best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a joyous New Year.

Julian of Norwich Gathering on January 11th
St. Julian of Norwich: 14th Century feminist?  14th Century heretic?  No, although a reader might at first think so.  14th Century psychologist?  Sort of . . . she understood the human heart and, through her sixteen revelations of Jesus, she understood the heart of God.  Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time."  Come to one of our monthly meetings and find out why -- and learn about contemplative prayer.  We'd love to see you.

Blue Christmas:
A Service for When Christmas Hurts

Sunday, December 18, 4 pm at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Burlilngton

Recognizing the bittersweet nature of the holiday season for those who have suffered loss, this is a sacred time for those who are grieving. It is a time to come and join in sharing and hearing prayers, Scripture and music that acknowledge that God's presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God's Word comes to shine light into our darkness. As part of worship, those gathered will be invited to light a candle and place it on the Altar-table, naming before God their losses. This service is an ecumenical Christian service.

The service will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, December 18, at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 216 East Chandler Boulevard, Burlington, WI (on the triangle of Edward, Perkins and Chandler). For directions or further information, please call the church office at 262-763-7482 ext. 21.

The service will be followed by a time for light refreshments and fellowship. If this season is hard for you, know you are welcome at this worship service. If you know others who are finding this season difficult please invite them to be with us and perhaps in some way to experience the wonder and hope of Christmas.

January at The DeKoven Center

DeKoven's Second Tuesday series will inaugurate the New Year on January 10th with a lively "Metaphysical Potpourri," presented by the Rev. Travis Du Priest. The morning begins with coffee and conversation at 10:00, and the program follows at 10:30 in the Library of elegant, historic Taylor Hall, which will still be beautifully decorated for Christmas. Everyone is cordially invited!

"This will be something different and fun for a snowy winter morning," Travis promises. The presentation will be interactive, he says, with everyone having a chance to draw names and titles from a basketful of English and American metaphysical poems (16th and 17th centuries). Fr. DuPriest will read the poems as they are drawn and lead the group in a "refresher/discussion" for poets he has already introduced at previous Second Tuesdays or in a brief "intro/discussion" for poets we are meeting for the first time.

Each time Travis's presentations of these poets is thoroughly engaging. He introduces them as friends to friends, and lets the beauty of their verse work its own magic.   "You'll be amazed," he says, "at the variety of subjects, word-play, and spirited insight from these old and new poetic friends."

There will be wisdom aplenty in that basketful! We hope many will join us for this delightful and leisurely respite after the holiday rush.

Train the Trainers workshop for
Safeguarding God's Children
Are you feeling the call to lead the effort to teach your fellow Christians about preventing sexual abuse of our younger members?
While this is not a heartwarming topic, it is a fulfilling and needed ministry as it is very important to our faith communities that we provide hospitality while maintaining a safe environment.
The Diocese will be holding a training workshop for those who are interested in being trainers. The only prerequisite for attending this workshop is that attendees must have previously attended the Safeguarding God's Children training within the last five (5) years.

We will be facilitating future workshops throughout the Diocese in 2012. There is no cost to the participants. You only need to bring your interest and passion for forming our Church as safely as possible. The details:

When: Saturday, 14 January 2012

Time:   8:45am - 4:15pm

Where:  St. Luke's Church (4011 Major Avenue, Madison, WI 53716)
