Faith and Abundance: Making the Leap
by The Rev. Mark Moore
St Paul's Episcopal Church in Watertown is a tiny parish by any. The membership is small; the building takes up the space of about two modest ranch style houses, and sits primly on a corner lot!
In spite of these Lilliputian dimensions (or maybe because of them) we try very hard to have meaningful outreach in the community. Our priest has always had a very clear message, we are the Kingdom, we need to carry it into the community all of the time. Well, sure! But finding the right outreach project, finding the volunteers, finding the resources is always what the outreach coordinators worry about!
This is a story about making a leap of faith about resources, including volunteers, and finding that God does provide, and Faith and Abundance do go hand in hand!
Last spring, it was suggested to one of the parishioners that a resource room for infants and young children would be a good idea given the poverty both in our neighborhood and in Watertown in general. This seemed a gargantuan task to this parishioner . . .

Casting Our Bread upon the Waters:
Whitewater Campus Ministry
God's God's Work. Our Hands.
By The Rev. David Huxley, Campus Minister
Cast your bread upon the waters...
Ecclesiastes 11: 1
Greetings from the Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry in Whitewater! Here in Whitewater, we have been "Casting our bread upon the waters" along with a delicious spaghetti dinner every Monday night and feeding lots of hungry college students.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, as well as on-going support from various ELCA and Episcopal Churches, the Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry is now serving spaghetti dinners every Monday night. Last Monday we served a hundred hungry college students! Since moving from an every other week schedule to a weekly feeding, the numbers we serve have tripled and we expect even more growth in this ministry as word continues to spread!
The UW-Whitewater is very much a commuter campus. By that I mean that students live in Whitewater during the week and then head home on weekends. Many of the students I talk to at these meals are going home to work on weekends and some of them work during the week. They are not immune from the economic recession and they most definitely appreciate a free meal.
Those of us who do campus ministry know that the vast majority of the kids we are feeding will not be sitting in the pews of our local ELCA and Episcopal churches. However, they will know what the ELCA and Episcopal churches stand for and so we Cast our bread upon the waters, knowing that sooner or later many of them will be looking for a church to call home. We are grateful to be part of that process, and rest assured the students we are serving are very grateful for the meals your donations help provide. |

Cellist Michael Fitzpatrick in Concert
at DeKoven Center November 5th
November 5, 7:00 pm Cellist Michael Fitzpatrick in Concert: "Tuning the Planet"
St. John's Chapel, center of campus
Admission for this historic Concert will be $10.00 (instead of $20.00 as previously announced) so that everyone who would like to be part of this exciting event may comfortably attend. The Concert is to benefit the final stages of a 15-year project of immense scope Michael is producing in close musical association with the Dalai Lama who shares his vision. For this reason, larger donations would be appreciated whenever possible.
From the beginning, Fitzpatrick has dedicated his life and his music to the encouragement of harmony among diverse cultures and nations, naming His Holiness the Dalai Lama as his constant mentor. He is the recipient of outstanding international awards and has also played by invitation on the White House Lawn and on the West Lawn of the Capitol, as well as at the Hollywood Bowl.
The DeKoven Center is proud to present this vibrant and world-acclaimed cellist in Concert! A reception follows in St. John's Chapel for conversation with Fitzpatrick and CD purchase and signing if desired. For reservation, email kclark@dekovencenter.org or phone 262-633-6401 |

Parish / youth groups, etc. who would like to volunteer or to receive more information are asked to e-mail allsaint@minot.com . |
United Thank Offering (UTO)
grant applications available
NOTE: This year the Diocese of Milwaukee received a grant for $11,567 for the equipment and supplies for the maternity unit of the reopened hospital in our companion diocese, the Diocese of Newala. The unit was opened this month which is a wonderfully quick turn-around for the grant money.
TWO DATES to be aware of if you have a fall ingathering and/or seek a UTO grant:
The application for the UTO grants to be given in 2012 is now on the website of the UTO at www.dfms.org/UTO click on the grants line under United Thank Offering to get the application screen. Those applications need to be in thediocesan office by DECEMBER 20, 2011. That will give the diocesan grant committee time to evaluate the applications and pass their recommendations on to Bishop Miller so that the applications will be at the national office by January 15, 2012. We can submit one application for our diocese. We also can submit an application for a companion diocese such as the Diocese of Newala or for a program such as our relationship with Jeanette, Haiti. Preference is given to applications addressing the needs of women and children.
The deadline for contributions from fall ingatherings has been moved forward also. If your parish has such an offering, please send it to Ms. Connie Ott, Diocesan UTO Coordinator, at 7995 Shagbark Circle, Cross Plains, WI 53528 by DECEMBER 1, 2011 so that it can be at the national office by December 15. Money received by DECEMBER 1, 2011 will be used in the granting cycle for 2012. For more information go to the UTO website or contact Connie Ott, at cott@chorus.net or (608) 798-3688. |

Julian Gathering at St. Dunstan's, Madison welcomes all . . .
What is a Julian Gathering? A Julian Gathering is open to everyone and you are welcome at all times. We support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality. These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org) and have the quintessentially Anglican writings of Bl. Mother Julian of Norwich at their core. They are for all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's revelations. Don't worry if you've never practiced silent prayer before, we can set your mind at ease. We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 9. For additional information, contact Susan Fiore: (608) 845-2413 or slfiore@mac.com . |
