  Diocesan Convention . . .

an initial report

flowers and bulletinSome 300 clergy, lay deputies, guests, vendors and visitors attended the Diocese of Milwaukee 164th Annual Convention  in the city of Racine on October 14-15.  Business sessions took place at Memorial Hall in the Racine Civic Center complex; nearby  St. Luke's, Racine was the site of the  Convention Eucharist, celebrated by Bishop Miller.

The Convention's recording secretary, Deacon Marge Kiss, is already hard at work on the minutes of the two-day meeting they are understandably not  yet (quite!)available.  As soon as they are, they will be added to the  items posted on the Convention 2011 page on the Diocese of Milwaukee website www.diomil.org where the Bishop's pastoral address and the election results are currently posted.

A highlight of each year's convention is the presentation of the Bishop's Shield Award.  This year's recipients were Jane Henning of Grace, Madison, who for many years served as president of the Diocesan Altar Guild; and The Rev. Andy Jones of St. Andrew's, Madison who was honored for his ministry in the Madison area, including his efforts this year on behalf of St. Francis House during the struggle to obtain the city of Madison's approval for SFH's building project.

We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who helped make this year's Convention a success, including the volunteers, the vendors and exhibitors, workshop presenters, and the clergy and people of St. Luke's, Racine! Thank you!

Note:  Next year's Diocesan Convention will be held in Madison, at the Madison Marriott West Hotel and Conference Center, on October 12-13, 2012.  Remember, ALL members of the diocese are invited to take part in convention -- as deputies elected by their parishes or as visitors, vendors, or volunteers!

United Thank Offering (UTO)
grant applications available

NOTE: This year the Diocese of Milwaukee received a grant for $11,567 for the equipment and supplies for the maternity unit of the reopened hospital in our companion diocese, the Diocese of Newala. The unit was opened this month which is a wonderfully quick turn-around for the grant money.

TWO DATES to be aware of if you have a fall ingathering and/or seek a UTO grant:

The application for the UTO grants to be given in 2012 is now on the website of the UTO at www.dfms.org/UTO    click on the grants line under United Thank Offering to get the application screen.   Those applications need to be in thediocesan office by DECEMBER 20, 2011.  That will give the diocesan grant committee time to evaluate the applications and pass their recommendations on to Bishop Miller so that the applications will be at the national office by January 15, 2012. We can submit one application for our diocese. We also can submit an application for a companion diocese such as the Diocese of Newala or for a program such as our relationship with Jeanette, Haiti. Preference is given to applications addressing the needs of women and children.

The deadline for contributions from fall ingatherings has been moved forward also. If your parish has such an offering, please send it to Ms. Connie Ott, Diocesan UTO Coordinator, at 7995 Shagbark Circle, Cross Plains, WI 53528 by DECEMBER 1, 2011 so that it can be at the national office by December 15. Money received by DECEMBER 1, 2011 will be used in the granting cycle for 2012. For more information go to the UTO website or contact Connie Ott, at  [email protected]  or (608) 798-3688.

Julian Gathering at St. Dunstan's, Madison welcomes all . . .

What is a Julian Gathering?  A Julian Gathering is open to everyone and you are welcome at all times.  We support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality.  These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org) and have the quintessentially Anglican writings of Bl. Mother Julian of Norwich at their core.  They are for all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing.  Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's revelations.  Don't worry if you've never practiced silent prayer before, we can set your mind at ease.   We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI.  Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 9.  For additional information, contact Susan Fiore: (608) 845-2413 or [email protected] .

The Rev. Debra Trakel

"Lord, Teach Us to Pray"

A Series on the art, blessing, and gift of prayer

On the first four Tuesdays in November (1, 8, 15, and 22), from 7 PM-8:30 PM, the Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's, psychotherapist, and pray-er, will gather people together to talk about the fascinating subject of how and why we pray in today's world, teach different prayer techniques (including centering prayer), and practice different ways to pray.

Debra has been a priest for sixteen years. In a galaxy far, far away she was a Franciscan nun. She has been in Spiritual Direction for almost all of the last forty years of her life. She is well schooled in the language and practice of prayer but says, "While there is both art and skill to prayer, it is finally about relationship, and thus, we all pray differently. So we will learn from one another."

You need not attend all of the four evenings to participate. If you are interested in attending any of these evenings, please call the office at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 414-352-0380. Located on five beautiful acres of land in River Hills, it is a lovely place to explore what the disciples were asking Jesus when they said, "Lord, teach us to pray. . ."
