St. Christopher's in River Hills is delighted to be presenting Franco Zeffirelli's outstanding film, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon," on Wednesday evening, October 5th at 6 PM. This film is a moving and lyrical depiction of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, that feisty, eccentric, romantic and devout Christian who helped to change the face of the church, and spawned a movement that continues today in his name: Franciscanism.
Refreshments will be provided; please RSVP to the office (414-352-0380 / office@stchristopherswi.org) so that we have an idea of how many will be attending.
St. Christopher's is located at 7845 N. River Road in River Hills. |
Cathedral Institute - October 6th
"Ecumenism and Why it Matters to Us"
Speaker: The Rev. David Simmons, Diocese of Milwaukee Ecumenical Officer
Ecumenism or oecumenism mainly refers to initiatives aimed at greater Christian unity or cooperation. The word is derived from Greek οἰκουμένη (oikoumene), which means "the whole inhabited world", and was historically used with specific reference to the Roman Empire. The ecumenical vision comprises both the search for the visible unity of the Church (Ephesians 4.3) and the 'whole inhabited earth' (Matthew 24.14) as the concern of all Christians. (Wikipedia)
The Rev'd David Simmons is the rector of St. Matthias, Waukesha. He has a passion for fostering collaboration, sharing resources and seeking innovative ways to share the gospel within the parish, the diocese and the surrounding community. He is a leader on ecumenical issues both locally and nationally. He has helped to start an ecumenical Taize service that meets regularly in Waukesha.

The Rev. Debra Trakel |
"Lord, Teach Us to Pray"
A Series on the art, blessing, and gift of prayer
On the first four Tuesdays in November (1, 8, 15, and 22), from 7 PM-8:30 PM, the Rev. Debra Trakel, Rector of St. Christopher's, psychotherapist, and pray-er, will gather people together to talk about the fascinating subject of how and why we pray in today's world, teach different prayer techniques (including centering prayer), and practice different ways to pray.
Debra has been a priest for sixteen years. In a galaxy far, far away she was a Franciscan nun. She has been in Spiritual Direction for almost all of the last forty years of her life. She is well schooled in the language and practice of prayer but says, "While there is both art and skill to prayer, it is finally about relationship, and thus, we all pray differently. So we will learn from one another."
You need not attend all of the four evenings to participate. If you are interested in attending any of these evenings, please call the office at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 414-352-0380. Located on five beautiful acres of land in River Hills, it is a lovely place to explore what the disciples were asking Jesus when they said, "Lord, teach us to pray. . ."
