St. Francis Assisi movie  Sept. 17 at St. Christopher's, River Hills

St. Christopher's in River Hills is delighted to be presenting Franco Zeffirelli's outstanding film, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon," on Wednesday evening, October 5th at 6 PM. This film is a moving and lyrical depiction of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, that feisty, eccentric, romantic and devout Christian who helped to change the face of the church, and spawned a movement that continues today in his name: Franciscanism.

Refreshments will be provided; please RSVP to the office (414-352-0380 / [email protected]) so that we have an idea of how many will be attending.

St. Christopher's is located at 7845 N. River Road in River Hills.

Bishop seeks support for St. Francis House initiatives coming before Madison Planning Commission and Common Council on Sept. 19/20

Beginning in 2008, the board of St. Francis House Episcopal Student Center in Madison engaged in strategic planning which led to a partnership with LZ Ventures to develop student apartments on a portion of the current St. Francis House (SFH)site.  Revenue from the new 8-story apartment building will provide the funding to sustain SFH's ministry to young people and the community.  The building proposal will come before the Madison Planning Commission on September 19 and before the Madison Common Council on September 20.  Bishop Miller is asking members of the diocese and all friends of SFH and the Episcopal Church to contact the members of these two bodies to voice their support for the proposal.  Please take a few moments to read Bishop Miller's letter and then use the contact information  to contact the Planning Commission and Common Council members.

Second Tuesday Series at

The DeKoven Center

St. Luke's Church,The popular Second Tuesdays series opens for its ninth year on Sept. 13 in The DeKoven Center's historic Taylor Hall, 600 21st St. in Racine, 53403. This familiar morning of fellowship and reflection begins at 10:00 with coffee and conversation in the Serving Room, followed by the Meditation at 10:30 in the Library, once James DeKoven's study.

The September session seems to bring its own excitement: reunion for "regulars" and eager welcome to those joining the group for the first time. For this first Meditation, Kitty Clark will bring together experiences from her own life and also thoughts stemming from a retreat she made last May at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN - "things new and old," she promises. Focus will be the steady interlacing of God's life with ours and also the exciting and often surprising invitations (challenges) God continually offers, and prepares us for.

There is no charge for Second Tuesdays, though a free will offering for the reception is welcomed.

An Evening with the Schumanns

Jenny Gettel, soprano

J. Mark Baker, baritone

Fumi Nishikiori, pianist

On September 12, 1840, Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were wed after emerging victorious from a long, contentious legal battle with the bride's father. While fighting for his marriage to Clara, Robert's artistic energy was full at work: he produced over 100 songs between the previous February and the wedding.

We will present a number of these beloved Lieder-combining poetry and music, voice and piano-as well as several by Clara, along with selections from their affectionate letters to one another. And for a dramatic twist, we will share several duets by Johannes Brahms, who was influenced by them, both musically and romantically.
