Church Responds to Hurricane Irene Victims
Millions of people were impacted by Hurricane Irene as it blasted up the eastern coast of the United States over the weekend of August 27-28. The storm was reportedly 600 miles wide when it hit the US after sweeping through the Caribbean. It caused at least 26 deaths and billions of dollars in damage along 1,100 miles of coastline stretching from North Carolina to Vermont. An estimated 2.4 million people were evacuated from areas where flooding and high winds threatened to disrupt infrastructure and destroy property. Episcopal Relief & Development has been in contact with a number of dioceses along the East Coast as communities begin to assess hurricane-related damage. Read more Donations to the US Hurricane Relief Fund at this time will assist dioceses impacted by Hurricane Irene https://www.er-d.org/donate-select.php.

Message from The Rev. Ann Grady, Hurricane Irene Survivor . . .
Note: The Rev. Ann Grady served in the Diocese of Milwaukee for several years folowing her ordination to the priesthood in 2001
Dear friends,
To those of you who have called or emailed to inquire how I am, my deepest thanks. I am fine, having suffered no damage from Tropical Storm Irene.
Christ Church, where I am finishing up an interim, and the city of Montpelier,Vermont came out of the flooding from Irene relatively unscathed. Both the church and the city received significant damage from flooding in May after the Winooski River, which flows through the city of Montpelier, crested at 17 1/2 feet.
Christ Church is at about the lowest point in the city and so our basement and undercroft were damaged by water. ServiceMaster came in, pulled up carpet, disinfected where it was needed, and removed 18 inches of drywall from the floor up on most of the walls because of moisture and mold. We are in the process of repairing that damage.
This last week the Winooski River crested at 19 feet. But amazingly, there was only 2-3 inches of water in the basement of Christ Church. Needless to say we are deeply grateful that we were spared damage.
Such cannot be said for much of southern Vermont however. The breadth of damage is stunning. Some communities are islands because all the roads leading to them were damaged and are impassable. Many people are still without power because utility companies cannot get to communities to restore it. In some places utility company personnel must go house to house checking to see if it is even safe for individual homes to have power.
There is not just weeks and months of work ahead. There is years of work to be done in this beautiful state. Please keep the people of Vermont in your prayers.
Yours in Christ's service,
(The Rev.) Ann Grady |

An Evening with the Schumanns
Jenny Gettel, soprano
J. Mark Baker, baritone
Fumi Nishikiori, pianist
On September 12, 1840, Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were wed after emerging victorious from a long, contentious legal battle with the bride's father. While fighting for his marriage to Clara, Robert's artistic energy was full at work: he produced over 100 songs between the previous February and the wedding.
We will present a number of these beloved Lieder-combining poetry and music, voice and piano-as well as several by Clara, along with selections from their affectionate letters to one another. And for a dramatic twist, we will share several duets by Johannes Brahms, who was influenced by them, both musically and romantically.
