Marking Tenth Anniversary of
9/11
[Episcopal News Service] Episcopal Church and other religious leaders are planning interfaith events to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks when almost 3,000 people perished after hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The Executive Council, at its June meeting, invited all Episcopal communities "to open the doors of their institutions" during the Sept. 10-11 weekend to commemorate the anniversary "with acts of prayer and remembrance, service, creativity, interfaith cooperation, education, community building, and fellowship, offering our institutions as active, accessible sites of healing for our local communities."
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said in an Aug. 18 statement that the anniversary is "an opportunity for reflection," adding that the Episcopal Church "continues to work for healing and reconciliation."
"The greatest memorial to those who died 10 years ago will be a world more inclined toward peace," said Jefferts Schori, who will preach at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, at St. Paul's Chapel in New York, a few meters from where the World Trade Center stood, and at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. read more |

UTO Grant Awarded to Newala Medical Clinic
The United Thank Offering has awarded a grant of $11,576 to
the Diocese of Milwaukee's Companion Diocese of Newala. The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the maternity ward at St. Michael's Health Centre in Lulindi. The hospital has been dormant for many years but with the formation of the new Diocese of Newala in 2009 work has been undertaken to refurbish the buildings and the UTO grant will supply badly needed medical equipment and supplies.
Neil Radtke, who chairs Companion Diocese Committee, notes that the area served by the medical center will include some 40 villages with a population of 90,000 or more people.

Chalice Bearer & Reader/Greeter Assistance Opportunities
at St. John's on the Lake
Chalice Bearer and Reader/Greeter Assistance Opportunities
St. John's on the Lake, the retirement community on Milwaukee's east side connected with our Diocese, is in need of a number of new volunteers to assist with Sunday chapel services. Volunteers are typically scheduled about two times per year and the work is simple. Both chalice bearers and reader/greeters are needed. This is a wonderful way to serve a part of our faith community, and you just might see a few folks you haven't seen in a while. If you are interested, contact John W. Curtis, 1840 N. Prospect Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202, phone 414-298-0097, email john_curtis@msn.com that can get you "in the rotation". The commitment is light, but the impact on the residents is very great. Please consider serving in this very vital ministry. |

Greetings from the Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry (LECM) in Whitewater! It's that time again-the students are already starting to trickle back onto campus and the start of classes is just a few weeks away. If you have college students coming to the UW-Whitewater, we would love to greet them and introduce them to the LECM! Amongst a number of other events, we offer a free student meal the second and fourth Mondays of each month during the academic year, from 5-6:30pm, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. In my experience (as a former student and campus minister) there is nothing that attracts students like free food.
We also have a scholarship available as I write this. It pays $300 per semester and is renewable to the following academic year. For details and/or an application, the student can contact me at 262.749.1168 or at dehuxrev@sbcglobal.net.

Quiet Garden at DeKoven
August 28 (2:00 - 4:00 pm)
The DeKoven Center, 21st Street and Wisconsin Avenue in Racine, once more invites its many friends to enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon walking DeKoven's wooded campus and visiting its fabled gardens which a dedicated group of Master Gardeners has brought to full summer array.
For five years, the DeKoven Center has been a member of England's Quiet Garden Movement, with a growing membership on both sides of the Atlantic. The goal of the Movement is simply to open beautiful and historic gardens for an afternoon of leisure in busy lives, and DeKoven is proud to share its vision. Guests are invited to bring musical instruments, materials for drawing, notebooks for poetry. "Bring your children," invites Director Max Dershem. "This is a family afternoon."
The Rt. Rev. Roger White, Tenth Bishop of Milwaukee (retired) and a beloved DeKoven gardener, will offer a gathering meditation at 2:15 in the Bishop's Garden beside Taylor Hall on the east side of the campus. Lemonade and cookies will be served throughout the afternoon. There is no charge for these hours of leisure, though a free will offering is always welcome.
