Bp Miller photoBishop's Letter on Wisconsin's Proposed Concealed Carry Law

Dear Friends in Christ,

Below is a copy of a letter I sent to major newspapers in our state regarding the concealed carry law before our State Legislature. As Christians we are called to choose Life and model our lives on him who is our Life, Peace, and Joy-Jesus the Christ. Our vocation in the words of the Prayer of St. Francis is to be instruments of Christ's peace. I invite you to join me in this work.

Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

Bishop

Letter to the Editor

On September 11, 2001 I was serving as rector of an Episcopal congregation inside the Capital Beltway. Shortly after 9:30 a.m. on that day, I felt the ground tremble and shake.  Minutes later, I learned that a plane which had struck the Pentagon caused that tremor. The next few days were days filled with both fear and sorrow, sorrow brought even closer when we learned that the mother of one of the children in my daughter's first grade class had been killed in that attack.

One of the reasons I have been proud to live in Wisconsin is because of our reasonable gun laws. They allow citizens of Wisconsin who enjoy hunting to do so and set reasonable limitations on other weapons.  We do not need concealed carry. We do not need to be a state like Minnesota or North Carolina, in which wherever where you go--restaurants, hotels, and even churches--signs are posted regarding firearms. The proposed bill permitting the concealed carry of firearms before the legislature will only add to a culture of violence and fear.  It will only increase the number of senseless killings we read about in this paper every day.

Christians serve the Lord, who has promised in the Scriptures to turn weapons of war into tools of agriculture. Unfortunately, in this state with a rich agricultural industry we seem to be going the other way.

ATTENTION PARISHES!

Time to apply for aid in 2012 from

Mission & Development!

Applications from parishes for 2012 Mission and

Development financial aid are available on the diocesan website www.diomil.org  and they due June 3, 2011. Peggy Bean, Bishop's Deputy for Congregational Development, says, "We have changed the application deadline in order to help those applying for aid know the results early enough to plan the 2012 budget.  A change the Commission made this past year for those who did receive financial assistance was to have liaisons from the Commission make visits to aided congregations . . . we believe a crucial part of our application process is to meet together to have conversation.  In applying for aid you will also have an interview scheduled this summer as part of the application process. Please review the application and if you have questions please contact Peggy Bean at 414-272-3028 or bean@diomil.org .

A message from ERD . . .

In the wake of waves of tornadoes and severe storms, 200 people have died throughout the South and Southeast and widespread damage to homes and civic infrastructure has been reported.

Episcopal Relief & Development has been in contact with impacted dioceses, and is working with local churches to respond in a number of locations.

Pray for those who are at risk or who have suffered losses, for the families of those who have died, and for the rescue and relief teams who are working to save lives and address immediate needs.

Please contribute today to help those devastated by these relentless storms.

Thank you!
