Matthew 10:40-42 (The Message)
"We are intimately linked in this harvest work. Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me, the One who sent you. Anyone who accepts what I do accepts my Father, who sent me. Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God's messenger. Accepting someone's help is as good as giving someone help. This is a large work I've called you into, but don't be overwhelmed by it. It's best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won't lose out on a thing."

What is EYE:

EYE is a real experience of our Episcopal Church.  It is the second largest event in the Episcopal Church and the single largest youth event in the Episcopal Church, typically attended by some 1500 young people, adult sponsors, bishops, staff, and resource people. EYE is a once in a lifetime opportunity to gather with 1500 other young people.

There will be three very full days of worship, sharing, praying, learning, singing, and working, calling participants into a greater awareness of and commitment to God's mission in the world.

Cost:  Approximately $400 a person.
Ten percent of each registration will be used specifically to respond to mission opportunities at the event in keeping with the Five Marks of Mission and Millennium Development Goals. Cost includes: registration, lodging, meals, transportation, t-shirts and other costs.  Scholarship assistance is available.  All attendees are expected to pay something towards the cost of attendance.

Lenten Retreat offered at St. Luke's Church in Madison

A Clearing Season

March 12,  9:30 - 4:00
Holy Wisdom Monastery
4200 Country Road M, Middleton
Cost $25/person
Includes breakfast, lunch, coffee/tea, training materiasl and optional spiritual direction.

Imagine Lent as "our annual invitation to come closer with God" (Parsons, A Clearing Season.) When was the last time you paused to take account of your soul? Is your current spiritual life one of joyful connection with God and others? Each soul is unique, and has its own wild or barren places where God is not yet welcome.

Join us as we pray and worship together.  We will reflect on the places in our lives where we have not yet made God welcom, and create our own Lenten practices designed to clear a path to God.  The day will be spent in a mixture of teaching, reflection, intimate discussion, worship and fellowship.  Opportunity will be given to sign up for ongoing small groups to meet through the season of Lent.

For more information, go to: http://www.stlukesmadison.org/
Call 608-222-6921 or email episcopallentenretreat@gmail.com for information.

Please register by February 23, 2011.

Book of Faith:  Lenten Journey

During Lent, many people find it helpful to have read about Jesus' preparations leading up tolent book what we know as Holy Week. One book that serves this particular purpose is Book of Faith: Lenten Journey by Kathryn A. Kleinhans.  Ms. Kleinhans serves as Professor of Religion at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA.

This book is split into daily readings readings; one for each of the 40 days of Lent. It has a scripture reading, a reflection, and questions to ponder for each day. Each section is short and to the point and yet let the reader contemplate what the season of Lent means to them. This book also contains tips on how to journal along with reading this book and how to journey through Lent while reading this book with others. If you are looking for some Lenten reading, this is a good book to try.

Episcopal Relief and Development Lenten Resources

ERDlogo

We invite you to celebrate Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday on the first Sunday in Lent, March 13, or another convenient Sunday during the Lenten season.

To help your congregation prepare for this day and for the Lenten journey, we encourage you to order the 2011 Lenten Meditations booklet. This year's devotional was co-authored by a group of leaders from across the Episcopal Church. Reflecting a variety of backgrounds and theological perspectives, these meditations offer insights on the daily lectionary readings and how we might apply them to our lives as we face a world in need.

The devotional and additional Lenten materials are available from the Episcopal Media Center (EMC). Devotionals are currently being pre-ordered and are estimated to ship the week of January 24. Lenten materials are free; a minimal fee will be charged for shipping and handling. Large orders or overnight and second-day delivery will incur additional shipping costs.

When ordering, please note that the devotionals and other materials come in packs of varying sizes. To place orders, call EMC at 1.866.937.2772, visit the online Episcopal Marketplace or click on the resources below. Orders must be placed by February 28 to ensure they will arrive in time for Ash Wednesday, March 9.

Christian Formation Staff

Shannon PictureThe Rev. Shannon Kelly is the Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation.  She is responsible for overseeing, creating and nurturing formation throughout the diocese "zero to grave."  I work in conjunction with parishes and convocations to create, sustain and promote education and formation by helping parishes with resources, coaching and trainings, by holding events that are held regionally and diocesan wide, by supporting and assisting those doing the work of formation, and by making resources available for all people.  This includes, but is not limited to children, youth and adult ministries, including Camp Webb, youth events, vacation Bible schools, adult retreats, and trainings for those in leadership positions.  She can be reached at kelly@diomil.org or 414-272-3028 x114.

kateKate McKey is the Christian Formation Assistant. She works part-time with Shannon in the Christian Formation Office organizing and keeping up with the Resource Center, managing the office and assisting Shannon in planning, implementing and running various programs throughout the year. For those of you who came to camp last year, you will recognize Kate as one of our conselors. We are blessed to have her continuing to serve in the diocese. Kate is also serving part-time as the youth minister at St. Andrew's in Madison and leading the Madison Area Youth Group once a month. She can be reached at diomilformation@gmail.com or at 608-257-1533.

REGSThe Rev. REGS Scheeler has been a deacon of this diocese of many years, serving us in many different ways.  Throughout his time, his passion and focus on formation and education for youth and their leaders has not changed.  REGS is a non-stipendiary staff person who is available to help congregations move through transition, assist them in discernment or challenge them as they move forward.  He can make visits on Sundays and some weekdays.  If you think a visit from him would be of use to you, don't hesitate to call and discover the ways in which he might help your parish.  He is also in charge of the New Beginnings weekend and is assisting with other formation events throughout the year.  He has a gift and call for cooking ministry which we try to incorporate into all he does.
If you have formation news, events, or resources that you think would be of interest to the Diocese at large and that you would like to see in this electronic publication, please do not hesitate to email me at kelly@diomil.org.

If you want to be removed from this list, you may do so. If you have missed an issue or if you would like to look at old issues, links to the archives can be found on the Christian Formation Pages at http://www.diomil.org/christian-formation.

Thank you for your ministry, for your commitment to Christian Formation, and for sharing your gifts with the church.  Please let me know if there is anything that you would like to see in this eNews in the future and don't forget to pass this along!

Peace,

The Rev. Shannon Kelly
