ChUnityWeek of Prayer for
Chrisitan Unity

(from a letter from the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Cathoic Covenant Community, issued Advent 2011) On the occasion of The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18-25, 2011, we three bishops, Jerome Edward Listecki, Steven Andrew Miller and Jeff Barrow, reaffirm that unity is a gift which Christ has promised to all who seek to live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit according to the will of the Father.  We believe that the diverse gifts and traditions of our Communions are blessings from God that will enrich a wider and fuller communion.

This year's Week of Prayer theme "One in the Apostles' Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer" (Acts 2:42ff) reminds us of the original unity of the Church and provides a foundation for the unity we desire . . .

A Christmastide sermon preached by Bishop Miller
We have beheld his glory, glory as of the only son of the Father.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Amen.

These last few days have had much of humanity looking to the heavens-- Some to view a cosmic event that has not occurred for over three hundred years. And though it was not visible to our eyes here, the air waves and the social media were filled with descriptions of the awesome sight by ordinary stargazers and reports of what we could learn from our heavenward gazing by astronomers and climatologists.

Children, so engulfed by the excitement that they can hardly sleep, have their eyes fixed on the heavens, too hoping to catch a glimpse of a tiny glimpse of another visitor, an annual one, aboard a sleigh drawn by reindeer

And as believers, we also have looked to heaven and expressed our longing for the fulfillment of a vision in the words of the great hymn of the Advent season "O come, O come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel", as we live in the already but not yet kingdom of God.  Click to read full sermon

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Program

The Rev. Joanne Skidmore (St. John's, Burlington) announces that in  recognition of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, the Burlington Area Association of Congregations and Ministers (BAACM) is hosting a conversation for teens from 7th - 12th grade, parents and other interested adults on teen dating.  This is an opportunity to define healthy relationships and learn indicators of unhealthy (or potentially unhealthy) relationships.  While the focus is on teen dating, much of what we will explore applies to friendships as well.  The program will take place Wednesday, Feb 16, 2011, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Cross Lutheran, 126 Chapel Terrace, Burlington Wisconsin (Phone: 262-763-6570).

Julian of Norwich gatherings

Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and anchoress.  [What's an anchoress?  In the Middle Ages, certain women and men chose to live a life intensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, called an anchorhold, attached to a parish church.]  Little is known about Julian's life, but she wrote a book, as far as we know the first in English written by a woman, about a series of revelations which opened her to the depths of God's unconditional love for us in Jesus Christ.  Nearly forgotten for 600 years, Julian's insights and gentle wisdom are becoming ever more widely known and appreciated.  Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time."

Julian prayed often in silence, and at a Julian Gathering we support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality.  These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org).  They are open to all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing.  Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's book.  At the beginning of each meeting, brief instruction on the practice of contemplative prayer is offered for newcomers.   We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI.  Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 9.  For additional information, contact Susan Fiore at (608) 845-2413 or [email protected].

Hymnals and Prayerbooks needed

A request from The Rev. Mark Moore, rector at St. Paul's, Watertown:  "St. Paul's has the delightful problem of not having enough prayer books and hymnals, and the usual problem of not being able to afford new ones.  Are there parishes that are no longer using all of theirs and might be able to spare them?  Even if we could borrow them it would be a help".  If you can help, the parish's contact information is listed below -- and THANK YOU!
