A Christmastide sermon preached by Bishop Miller
We have beheld his glory, glory as of the only son of the Father.
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Amen.
These last few days have had much of humanity looking to the heavens-- Some to view a cosmic event that has not occurred for over three hundred years. And though it was not visible to our eyes here, the air waves and the social media were filled with descriptions of the awesome sight by ordinary stargazers and reports of what we could learn from our heavenward gazing by astronomers and climatologists.
Children, so engulfed by the excitement that they can hardly sleep, have their eyes fixed on the heavens, too hoping to catch a glimpse of a tiny glimpse of another visitor, an annual one, aboard a sleigh drawn by reindeer
And as believers, we also have looked to heaven and expressed our longing for the fulfillment of a vision in the words of the great hymn of the Advent season "O come, O come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel", as we live in the already but not yet kingdom of God. Click to read full sermon |
Second Tuesday Series at DeKoven Center begins Jan. 11
"Who are these like stars appearing" will be both theme and title for Kitty Clark's opening Meditation of DeKoven's long-standing Second Tuesday Series. The morning begins at 10:00 with coffee and conversation in the Serving Room, followed by the Meditation at 10:30 in the Library, once James DeKoven's study.
Kitty's thoughts for this Epiphany Meditation will draw on the witness of saints and sages across the centuries whose lives give courage and light to our own. "But it is not the great saints alone who are lights for us," Kitty reminds us. "Each of us has a more personal 'cloud of witnesses,' our own beloved dead, who still keep their watch. Often a remembered word or example comes to us, surprises us even, when we need it most, and we are grateful."
Her talk will open the eighth season of this increasingly popular series, which now meets every other month and includes several other presenters. Susanne Sklar, D.Phil, a good friend of DeKoven who is presently teaching at Carthage College, will be the Second Tuesday speaker on March 8, with the intriguing title, "Beauty will save the world."
"There is no charge for these mornings of fellowship and reflection, Director Max Dershem says, "though a free will offering is welcome. Everyone is cordially invited!" The DeKoven Center is located at 600 21st Street, Racine, WI 53403. Phone: (262) 633-6401.

Week of Prayer for
(from a letter from the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Cathoic Covenant Community, issued Advent 2011) On the occasion of The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18-25, 2011, we three bishops, Jerome Edward Listecki, Steven Andrew Miller and Jeff Barrow, reaffirm that unity is a gift which Christ has promised to all who seek to live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit according to the will of the Father. We believe that the diverse gifts and traditions of our Communions are blessings from God that will enrich a wider and fuller communion.
This year's Week of Prayer theme "One in the Apostles' Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread and Prayer" (Acts 2:42ff) reminds us of the original unity of the Church and provides a foundation for the unity we desire . . .
