First Vespers of Advent One

November 27, 2010

"A thrilling voice from Jordan rings

Rebuking guilt and darksome things

Vain dreams of sin and visions fly

Christ in his might shine forth on high"

Advent hymn for Lauds, tr. Winfred Douglas

Dear Friends in Christ,

I write at the beginning of the new liturgical year, what I wish more of us would claim as the Christian New Year. As I read the lesson for the first vespers (Evening Prayer) of Advent I and anticipated singing the words quoted above I was reminded again not only of the power of Advent but of the whole yearly cycle of prayer in the Christian year.

Tonight as I read from the second chapter of Paul's letter to the Philippians, I was struck how these words not only crown our year but also lay out the whole thrust of the Christian life. "Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself taking the form of a servant." He asks the Corinthians to "complete his joy" by living in this way.

Paul's word to the church at Philippi is God's word to the church in Milwaukee, too. His call is to put on the mind of Christ. I know of no other way to do this than by intentional prayer and study of Scripture.  Many of us have tried with varying degrees of success to have a regular and intentional devotional life. If you have struggled in this let me encourage you to try the buddy system. Find someone  to partner with you in an accountability program for reading the Bible. Make a commitment with one other person to read the appointed lessons found in a devotional like Forward Day by Day or the lectionary in the Book of Common Prayer or choose a book from the library we call the Bible and read it together.  It is a wonderful way to grow in grace.

Please know of my prayers for you and yours in this Advent season. May God grant you his richest blessings.

Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller (Bishop of Milwaukee)

Bishop of Milwaukee

utoUTO Grant Applications Available
The 2011 UTO application information is now on line. Applications for 2011 will need to be in the BIshop's office by Monday, January 10th. They will be reviewed by the diocesan grant committee and then passed to the Bishop for final recommendation. Each diocese can only submit ONE grant request per year. However, a SECOND request can be submitted for a companion diocese or for work abroad that is closely linked with a parish or the diocese. Please go to www.episcopalchurch.org/uto to find information about grant guidelines, criteria and the application itself, all available for downloading. Julian of NJulian Gathering

December 8th at St. Dunstan's, Madison

Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and anchoress.  [What's an anchoress?  In the Middle Ages, certain women and men chose to live a life intensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, called an anchorhold, attached to a parish church.]  Little is known about Julian's life, but she wrote a book . . . Nearly forgotten for 600 years, Julian's insights and gentle wisdom are becoming ever more widely known and appreciated . . .
