Cathedral Hunger Book Sale says "Thank You"!
The book dust has settled, all our bills are paid and the checks are in the mail. Donations were made to 4 food pantries, 6 free meal sites, 7 organizations that provide food to their participants and 2 organizations that fight hunger in the world. A total of $18,800 was donated from the proceeds of the 2010 Hunger Book Sale.

Nearly 100 volunteers helped with this year's sale including many from other congregations -- St. Mark's, St. Paul's, even the Cathedral of St. John's the Evangelist. Many parishes throughout the diocese helped with book collections at their churches. Prayers for the success of our sale were said around the city. The Book Sale committee wants to thank everyone who participated in any way; buying, donating, working or praying. It's gratifying to think that a bunch of old books could help feed so many people in our community and beyond.
Next year's sale is August 4-9 and while the work is done mostly during the summer, donations are accepted all year long. Call at 414-271-7719 or email hungerbooksale@gmail.com for times. |

Earlier this month, Diocese of Milwaukee deacons gathered for their annual meeting with Bishop Miller. Archdeacons Susan Mueller and Chuck Zellermayer report that one exciting result of the meeting is the formation of a Deacon's Council. Working with ideas gatherred during the meeting, the Council's initial goal is to identify an area of ministry all diocesan deacons can participate in within their own communities of influence.

Julian Gathering
December 8th at St. Dunstan's, Madison
Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and anchoress. [What's an anchoress? In the Middle Ages, certain women and men chose to live a life intensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, called an anchorhold, attached to a parish church.] Little is known about Julian's life, but she wrote a book . . . Nearly forgotten for 600 years, Julian's insights and gentle wisdom are becoming ever more widely known and appreciated . . .

Cathedral Supports Dairy Cow Project in Diocese of Newala

A resolution passed at this year's diocesan convention made official the companion relaDiocese of Milwaukee and the new Tanzanian (East Africa) Diocese of Newala. From 1967-1969 the Diocese of Milwaukee was in a companion relationship with the Diocese of Masasi, which became so large by late 2009 that it was divided into two dioceses: Masasi and Newala. So, in a sense, we are re-joining an old companion.
Neil Radtke, a member of All Saints
Cathedra in Milwaukee, was a missionary in Tanzania in the late 1960's and last year received a visit from a former student, Dr. Lawi Issa, a member of the St. Mary's parish in southern Tanzania. Dr. Issa outlined St. Mary's new dairy cow project, which is similar in design to the Heifer Project. They call it "Kopa Ng'ombe, Lipa Ng'ombe" - "Borrow a Cow, Pay a Cow." Presently, only about 5% of the people in Newala have access to milk. The dairy cow project aims to increase that to 20% by 2012. The 55 members of the project have contributed $576 themselves - in a country where annual income averages $200! Neil Radtke's extended family has funded construction of a cow hut and the purchase of two cows.

What remains is the purchase of more cows, at around $500 each, and training from the Veterinary Officer from the District Council of Newala. Raising funds to help with these costs is the fourth quarter, 2010 outreach project of All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee - and all members of the diocese are invited and welcomed to join in supporting this project in our new companion diocese. Checks may be made out to All Saints' Cathedral with "Outreach - Cows" on the notation line, and mailed to All Saints' Cathedral, 818 East Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.
