 Our Next Generation celebrates!  On Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 parents, students, other family members, volunteer tutors and mentors, staff and board members gathered in Our Next Generation's Neighborhood Center to celebrate the conclusion of another successful school term. The evening showcased the continued partnerships with community organizations, the impact of positive academic mentors, the implementation of successful educational programs and the success of students of the High School Connection who achieved a 99% high school graduation rate. The latter is a remarkable success as fewer than 40% of students in this central city community graduate from high school. |
 St. Mark's Blessing of the Bicycles at the Downer Classic June 26th
Saturday, June 26th, promises to be a great day for St. Mark's and our surrounding neighborhood. As always, the Downer Classic Schedule of events includes races for children. This year, we'll be adding another exciting feature to the Downer Classic events. Before the children's races begin at 6pm, St. Mark's will feature the first annual Downer Avenue Blessing of the Bicycles. Pastor April will say a brief blessing on the bicycles and their riders and give them a sprinkling of holy water. Advance registration is not necessary. Kids ages 3-8 will race in the St. Mark's Sprint (tricycles welcome!), and kids ages 9-12 will have the chance to race like the pros in the Tweener Classic.
Please come out on June 26th and show your support for St. Mark's and our surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to show our neighbors that we care about them, while having fun in the process. Invite your friends and neighbors for the Blessing of the Bicycles, and be sure to enjoy some tasty roasted corn from the St. Mark's outreach ministries booth while you watch the races.

 On the road again . . . ( Thanks to The Rev. Scott Stoner for this welcome report on The Rev. Jim Kaestner's recovery and return to biking)
"My wife and I were in Door County last week and by coincidence so were the Kaestners. We met for lunch, and knowing it was just five weeks after his serious bike accident (a dislocated elbow that required surgery) I of course wanted to know how his recovery was going. With a gleam in his eye, he said, "I brought my bike with me-- let's go riding tomorrow!". And so we did, 30 miles along the shores of Green Bay. It was a joy to be part of his recovery process and I was just so happy that I was able to keep up with him!"

Root Beer Float Extravaganza

What's Red, White and Blue, Brown and has a foamy head and is served in a glass? Why it's a 4th of July Root Beer float, of course, served by a fantastic team of volunteers from Christ Church. We happily serve tasty Root Beer floats to 4th of July parade goers from our garden spot on our Church grounds and prime parade viewing location! It is a fun and wonderful way to spend a few hours on the holiday. Come and enjoy the Whitefish Bay 4th of July parade and have a Root Beer Float on Christ Church. Parade begins at 11:30 am.

The Great Hunger Booksale at

818 East Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee For the past 28 years proceeds from our sale, held the first week end in August, have gone to help fight hunger locally and even world wide. Last year we donated almost $20,000 to feeding the hungry. Of course first we have to get donations. We are collecting used books, CD's, DVD's, and tapes. Donations can be brought to the rear entrance of the church, Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 1 pm. Blessing of Dogs at St. Mark's, South Milwaukee

On June 13 the second annual Blessing of Dogs service was held at St. Mark's, South Milwaukee. In addition to parishioners, some 150 members of the surrounding community attended with 110 of their canine friends! At the right is The Rev. John Allen, St. Mark's priest-in-charge, with his dog "Mal", an Irish Wolfhound.

The Spiritual World of Nature June 27 at Christ Church, WFB
This intergenerational program is designed to use the beauty and complexity of the natural world to illustrate the teachings of the Christian Faith. Moreover every natural object has spiritual lessons hidden in its essence. Undoubtedly nature itself is an expression of God's will. Audubon Education Director Don Quintenz, an expert on nature, will lead us through the beautiful outdoor setting of our services where he will point out some of the many examples of spiritual lessons that are waiting to be gleaned from nature. Don's program will follow the 9:15 Garden Service on June 27th .

Camp Webb is an outdoor ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee. Everyone who comes to Camp Webb is given the opportunity to learn more about themselves and others, to discover more about the Episcopal Church, to develop a greater spiritual awareness, and to encounter Christ through living and learning in God's creation. Campers will learn new skills, make new friends, create lasting memories and explore who they are and who God is in their lives.

Red Door Clothes: Clothing and Caring for God's People
Red Door Clothes, a clothing ministry of St. James', Milwaukee and Trinity, Wauwatosa, is moving into summer time and seasonal clothing. Shorts and short-sleeve tops are welcome. But, as always, the biggest demand is for jeans (new, clean-used) in all sizes for men and women. Men's shoes are always in short supply, too. And if you have men's winter coats, we can put those into storage for next year. Most of our guests are men, but women and children are also visiting us regularly twice a month. Here is the ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world. The Community of Hope program creates a Christian community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are shaped by Benedictine spirituality, united in prayer, and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries. Participants explore God's call in our lives through a 12-week training class where we practice a "rule of life" through silence and Christian meditation and learn about pastoral care practices such as listening skills, confidentiality, discovering who you are, coping with grief and loss, and more.
The second Madison-area Community of Hope will run on Mondays, September 13 through December 13 from 6:15-8:15 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, located at 4011 Major Avenue off Monona Drive. Applications are available now; the modest registration fee is $100.
