Help for the People of Haiti Dear Friends in Christ,
I write to ask your prayers and assistance for the people of Haiti who have been so devastated by yesterday's earthquake. As a diocesan community we have had a long-standing relationship of deep affection and concern for the Diocese of Haiti and its people, particularly in the community of Jeannette. I am pleased to report that the two young men who were part of a recent mission trip from this diocese, and who are still in Haiti, are safe, and, it is hoped, will return home soon. At present we do not know the status of the facilities in Jeannette. We have received an unconfirmed report that the nearby town of Leogane was less severely affected. I pray that is the case for the people of Jeannette. I promise to keep you apprised of information regarding Jeannette as it becomes available. Information is also available through the website of the Diocese of Milwaukee's Haiti Project, located at http://www.haitiproject.org / The devastation in other parts of the country is great. I am asking each congregation to take a special collection which will be sent through Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for the people of Haiti as they begin to rebuild. Alternately, those wishing to make a direct contribution to ERD may do so at https://www.er-d.org/donate-select.php . Thank you for your compassionate response. Yours in Christ, The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller
Bishop of Milwaukee

Dead Sea Scrolls
Mondays Evenings at 6:30 PM Jan. 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1 at St. Bartholomew in Pewaukee
A DEAD SEA SCROLLS EXHIBIT IS COMING TO MILWAUKEE and we want to be there! The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible: Ancient Artifacts, Timeless Treasures will open at the Milwaukee Public Museum on January 22, 2010 for a limited engagement. In recent years the popular press has provided many accounts of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the controversy surrounding their discovery and publication. Sensational accusations of deception and suppression, and even competing claims made by respectable scholars, have both excited and confused the public. Yet the diverse and complex nature of the evidence has sometimes made it difficult for sincere, open-minded readers to get to the heart of the issue. To help address some of these issues, St. Bartholomew will offer a four part series, facilitated by Fr. Tom Papazoglakis, utilizing video, photographs and historical material. An optional group tour, to see the exhibit, will also be offered as a part of this program. Please come join us!

Prayer Vigil for Peace

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NRSV) Jesus said we are to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. Our neighbors are not just those who live in our community or our nation but all who live in the world. The Burlington Area Association of Churches and Ministers is offering a time to gather to pray for peace in our world. Conflicts, warfare, civil strife, displaced people, along with violence in our communities and in homes are a daily part of the world around us. We believe that this is not God's plan for the world. Without taking a specific stand on any specific conflict, we will gather for prayers for peace. We will be praying for those living with violence, for the men and women of our Armed Forces, for all who have died or lost loved ones in conflict, for those who are suffering as a result of conflict in the world. And because Jesus also said we are to pray for our enemies we will offer prayers for those we name as our enemies. The Prayer Vigil for Peace will be on Sunday, January 31st, 2 p.m. at Burlington United Methodist Church, 857 West State, Burlington. The church is located on Hwy 36 going towards Lake Geneva, just past Gooseberries and on the left (east). If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Marjorie Rice Myers at 763-2288 or Priest Joanne Skidmore at 763-7482.

Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols
The tradition of the "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" was established in England - as the adaptation of an earlier service - on Christmas Eve, 1918, in the chapel of Kings College, Cambridge University, for the university community and for the City of Cambridge.
On Sunday, December 20, 2009 that tradition was once again relived at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Sussex, Wisconsin.
