Zion, Oconomowoc
When kids decide they want to be a part of the Zion Puppeteers, they raise their hands up high ... and then they keep them there. "When you're working with a puppet, you have to hold your hand up as high as you can," said Alex Kunz, 14. "When you first start out. it's pretty hard, but then you practice and learn more about the puppets and from other people, and it's fun." Alex is a member of the Zion Puppeteers at Zion Episcopal Church in Oconomowoc. The group uses 30 to 40 people and animal puppets to tell Christian-themed stories and songs taken from the Bible, focusing on parables and subjects such as faith and blessings. St. John's, Burlington Outreach St. John the Divine Swedish Pancakes raises $1000 for Burlington's Transitional Living Center (TLC) TLC, whose ministry is helping the homeless help themselves, is a wonderful gift to our community. It provides not only shelter from the weather but it offers something even more important, hope, often when someone is feeling like there is no hope and there will never be hope again. In thanksgiving for their ministry, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church hosted over 150 people for a Swedish pancake breakfast on Sunday, November 8. People came from across southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to partake of scrumptious pancakes with lingonberries and whipped cream. The free-will offering brought in $1000 which TLC will use to keep their doors open to serving the homeless. Pictured is Jim Moxon, The Rev. Deacon Nancy Hodge, Director of TLC, and Birgit Moxon. Jim and Birgit were the Swedish chefs for breakfast.

Parish Advent & Christmas Events and Projects
Mitten Tree at St. Bartholomew's, Pewaukee
Every winter, the parishioners at St. Bartholomew Church in Pewaukee gather new, gently used and homemade mittens, hats and scarves for people in need. The donations provide warmth against Wisconsin's chilly winters, along with a little extra love to warm the heart and soul.
Pam Zettelmeier has been crocheting and knitting mittens since 1990 and makes about 200 pair every year for the Mitten Tree. She also makes hats and scarves. "I make them throughout the year and I really enjoy doing it. We also take them to the local food pantries, schools, the Rescue Mission in Milwaukee, women's shelters and the Salvation Army," says Pam.
The Mitten Tree is an Outreach Program of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), but the whole church and local community supports the effort says Pam. "People will donate yarn and mittens from home or will even buy them from the store."
Roselynn Buenting started knitting last year and was able to make over 100 scarves for this year's Mitten Tree. "It makes me feel good - like I'm doing God's work and I'm giving back to someone that has less than me," says Roselynn. "I try to say a prayer over the scarves while I am knitting them so that God keeps the people who are wearing then safe and warm."
For more information regarding the Mitten Tree at St. Bartholomew Church, call (262) 691-7307 or visit the church web site, www.stbartspewaukee.com.

ADVENT TREES AT ST. FRANCIS, MENOMONEE FALLS
St. Francis Church in Menomonee Falls joins many other parishes in creating Advent trees hung with tags for gifts for various charitable organizations. This year's focus at St. Francis is the Angel Closet, a project which provides clothing and small toys for children who are removed from their homes often with only the clothing they are wearing. This year another tree keeps it company. It's a Christmas Card Tree. Each family or individual is invited to hang ONE card for all parish members. Parishioners not only enjoy the beauty of the cards but also save time writing out multiple cards. What would ordinarily be spent for postage can be given to a worthy cause.

ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
The First Fifty Years
On November 1st, All Saints Day, as the people of Saint Andrew's Madison gathered to celebrate the saints past, present, and future, they unveiled the latest book by Anne Beiser Allen. Anne has spent the last year reading the Vestry minutes going all the way back to the parish' founding in1914, researching the history of Madison and Saint Andrew's, interviewing former clergy, Senior Wardens, and parishioners past and present. She has found photographs in the files of the state historical society and of local newspapers. She has searched through boxes and boxes of photos at Saint Andrew's and has been given pictures that, until now, have only existed in the photo albums of families who are part of St Andrew's rich and wonderful history. Anne's newest book, "St. Andrew's Episcopal Church: The First 95 Years" will be available for purchase for $15 beginning on November 1st. $5 of the proceeds covers the cost of printing and $10 of each purchase going to support the operating budget of Saint Andrew's! This book will make a wonderful Christmas present! Buy a copy for yourself, for your children, for people in your life with whom you would like to share the story of God's people at 1833 Regent Street! Call or email the parish office at general@standrews-madison.org or (608) 233-3249 for ordering information or check out the link on our web page at www.standrews-madison.org ! | |
