REVDEBThe Rev. Debra Trakel Honored
The Rev. Debra Trakel, rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, has been named the 2009 Distinguished Social Worker of the Year by the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Trakel, who ministers in one of the poorest areas of Milwaukee, was honored for her "fierce commitment" to the needs of the poor, a commitment that "clearly reflects both her social work and spiritual values," the nomination said.

Trakel, who holds a master's degree in social work, will be honored at a luncheon Oct. 21 at the Sheraton Madison, 706 John Nolen Drive, Madison.

Halloween at
St. Alban's, Sussex
Know St. Alban's in Sussex Is Wondering . . . .Where will YOU be on Halloween?
Join us Saturday, October 31 for our Annual All Hallows' Eve Candlelight Cemetery Celebration.  This unique worship experience combines readings from the Bible while learning about the Christian context behind many traditional Halloween activities like carving jack-o-lanterns and trick or treating.  Participants will meet the Witch of Endor (1 Sam. 28), hear about the first dancing skeleton from Ezekiel, do some real old fashioned trick-or-treating for "soul cakes", and be the very first human beings to hear told for the first time in nearly 100 years St. Alban's own Ghost Story all while following a path of candlelight through St. Alban's beautiful and historic cemetery.  This event is absolutely FREE for all ages, so what is your excuse for being anywhere else on All Hallows' Eve?
The experience begins at 5:30pm at St. Alban's for jack-o-lantern carving; 6:30pm is the candlelight cemetery celebration; 7:00pm All Hallows' Eve party in the fellowship hall.
Call St. Alban's at 262-246-4430 for more information.  Costumes welcome!
Don't be afraid!  Join the Celebration!

St. Luke's, Madison Organ Celebrates 20th Anniversary
On October 18, 2009, the Feast of St. Luke, St. Luke's, Madison will be involved in a triple celebration!  On that day, we will celebrate our patronal saint's feast day; the 20th anniversary of the dedication of our Visser-Rowland tracker organ; and the installation of our new Rector, the Reverend Paula Harris.  The organ part will occur at 3 pm that afternoon in the form of a recital featuring area musicians.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to bring guests to enjoy the wonderful sound of this very user-friendly instrument.  Besides selections for organ solo, the recital will feature music for organ + instruments (including violin, flute, recorder, handbells, and voice). St. Luke's sanctuary has near-perfect acoustics for music, and is a delightful space in which to enjoy music.

The keyboards' natural keys are cocobolo, while accidentals are maple.  It is called a "tracker" organ because the long key extensions inside the instrument resemble train tracks.  The organ is the only one in Wisconsin by its builder, Visser-Rowland Associates ("VRA") of Houston, Texas; VRA also built the largest tracker instrument in the country in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, that was featured at the American Guild of Organists national convention earlier this year, and also on the PBS radio program "Pipedreams".

For more information please call St. Luke's Director of Music,  Jane Peterson Ganz, at 608-838-8154.  We look forward to seeing you at this gala event!
