Michaelmas Faire at
All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee
It is September, 1370 and the villagers are abuzz with excitement. Soon the town square will be ringed with merchants. The Lord of the manor will be bringing his share of the crops to store in the tithing barns in order to feed the poor during the long winter ahead. There will be food for sale. More than that, there will be entertainers -- fools, musicians, puppeteers. There will be visitors and travelers, perhaps a wandering friar, a nun or a knight recently back from the French wars. There will even be a parade. Most of all there will be worship -- the medieval version of Matins in the Cathedral. All of this in honor of St. Michael and All Angels. It is, after all, Michaelmas!
After many years absence we are once again planning our Second Annual Michaelmas Faire for Saturday, September 26th on the Cathedral grounds at 804 East Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We'd appreciate your help in publicizing our Faire by posting the enclosed posters or sharing copies with parishioners in upcoming newsletters or Sunday bulletins.

MINISTERING TO THE ECUMENICAL FAMILY If you are a pastor, have you ever counseled a couple where one spouse is a Lutheran and the other a Catholic? Or where one spouse is an Episcopalian and the other a Greek Orthodox? What advice have you given about the Eucharist, where one Table is open and the other is not? What about the baptism of children? Or confirmation?
If you are a layperson, are you a part of an "ecumenical family" where each spouse participates in a different Christian tradition? Or are you thinking of marriage with someone from another part of the Christian family? How will the children be raised? What about the Eucharist? How is your ecumenical family an expression of Christian unity?
These thorny theological and pastoral concerns will be the subject of an upcoming conference at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee: Ministering to the Ecumenical Family: Pastoral and Theological Considerations Sept. 27-28. For more details, download the brochure and flyer .
This important conversation is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Council of Churches, Cardinal Stritch University, the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the ELCA, the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, and the Ecumenical Relations Office of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
We have brought together a top-notch panel of theologians and practitioners, along with a representative sample of "ecumenical couples" who are working through the differences of their respective Christian traditions.
Ministering to the Ecumenical Family is for both pastors and laypeople that face these issues in their daily lives. I hope you will duplicate the brochure and flyer and promote this event in your congregation. You can use the registration form attached to the brochure or register on-line at www.wichurches.org/events . |
