SOUSMANBe Part of new chruch for St. Mary's, Dousman
St. Mary's Parish, Dousman, is looking forward to construction starting on our new church building.  The new church building will be a beautiful house of worship and a place where we can welcome more and more people into the Body of Christ.  As you can well imagine, such an undertaking requires a great deal of faith and prayer as well as a variety of resources, skills, and gifts.  St. Mary's is grateful for your prayerful support and for all the ways our efforts are being supported and aided.  As we look to our new parish church, we find ourselves in need of a variety of church furnishings.  We are hopeful that there may be some parishes in our diocese that may have some items to share with us.  We are looking for the following and would be grateful to know if you might be able to assist us
  • Altar
  • Ambo
  • Chairs for priest, acolyte and deacon
  • Tabernacle/ambry
  • Pews
  • Chairs with attached kneelers
  • Kneelers for devotional prayer
  • Stations of the cross
  • Light fixtures that could be hung in a new church
  • Other items you feel might be worth looking into as we outfit our new worship space.
Many thanks for your consideration and, again, please keep us in your prayers.

smtw911Revisiting Ground Zero
(The Ven. Thomas F. Winslwo sent the following report and photo following a recent visit to the site of his chaplaincy at "ground zero" in New York City)

Following the events of 9/11 I served as an FBI Chaplain at Ground Zero during the month of November 2001. On Monday, July 13th, Peg and I took the train to NYC and visited St Paul's Chapel from which I served.  It was a very special day in which I was able to show Peg where I served.  Through the efforts of Bishop Miller I was able to celebrate Eucharist.  Sister Grace of the Society of St Margaret in Boston, with whom I served in 2001, was able to join us and assisted me.  Sr. Grace served as the coordinator of volunteers at St Paul's for nine months following 9/11.

Quiet Garden on Sunday, August 30th from 2-4 pm

The DeKoven Center cordially invites its many friends throughout the Diocese to enjoy its wooded campus and fabled gardens for an afternoon of pleasure and quiet conversation.  These hours are the vision of the Quiet Garden Movement in England, established in the 1980's for the sole purpose of providing leisure in the midst of busy lives.  The Movement's vision is to open beautiful and historic gardens for a few hours of rest and rejuvenation.  The DeKoven Center has been part of the Quiet Garden Movement for several years and is delighted to share this vision.  The Rev. Wendy Lane, Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, will give a gathering Meditation at 2:00.

Bring musical instruments if you like, materials for drawing or painting, or a notebook for poetry.  Bring your journal, bring a novel, bring your children.  DeKoven's campus is yours for these hours!  Free will offering only.
Considering Ordained Ministry?

Has the Lord been pestering you, either directly or through someone you know, to consider ordained ministry?  If so, the following dates should be in your calendar.  In addition, if you do not already have a manual, you may download one from the diocesan web site, http://www.diomil.org/commissions-committees-and-task-forces/com/discernment-manual-and-forms or contact me directly and I will mail you a hard copy.  Be aware, this manual is changing as you read this.  As soon as complete it will be published and you will need the updated version.

So, Here's the dates:

Sept 19 -  St. Mary's Dousman - 9:30 - noon --  Information Session for persons interested in the ordination process and their priest.  This will be an informational meeting with plenty of time for questions and answers designed to give you an idea of how the process works and what you can expect along the way.  So, bring pencil and paper for taking notes and we look forward to seeing you at St. Mary's.

Oct 17 - St. Mary's Dousman - 9:30 - 12:30 --  Parish Ministry Discernment Training for folks interested in the ordination process, their priests, and their parish discernment committees.  This meeting is for those who have attended the informational meeting and have received permission from the Bishop to form the Parish Ministry Discernment Committee.  This is a committee of people from your sponsoring parish as well as from other parishes that will spend approximately six months getting to know you and your call to ministry.  We will review the responsibilities of the committee and offer some guidelines about this part of the discernment process.

Nov 6 (evening) through Nov 7 (all day) -- is the Ministry Discernment Weekend at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison.   This weekend is for those who have completed the first two steps listed above, have had their medical and psych exams, background check, and financial review and will spend these two days in interviews for postulancy.

Hope for Dane County
Six Episcopal faith communities are meeting August 12 at 7 pm to explore the Community of Hope program and talk about making commitments to set up multi-congregational based training center in the Madison Area. St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent St, Madison, will be hosting this meeting. People from St. Andrew's, St. Dunstan's, Good Shepherd, St. Luke's, and Grace Churches as well as St. Francis House will be gathering as foundational organizations for a Community of Hope which will be open to all churches.
Community of Hope is a 14-session program to train people in pastoral care rooted in Benedictine spirituality. After clarifying their ministry and training in caring for others, participants in this program go on to minister in hospitals, homes, prisons, with youth, with the homeless and more.
If you are interested in this program, get more information and attend this meeting. More information about Community of Hope is available at www.coh-international.com and from Barb Lentz at jandb1624@sbcglobal.net . For information about the organizational meeting in Madison contact Fr. Bob Lambert at rector@stdunstans.com .
Education for Ministry

Education for Ministry (EFM) is a 4-year theological distance education program through the University of the South (Sewanee). If you have ever considered becoming a part of EFM, please prayerfully consider whether the time might be right for you now. We need to find one or two new students in the next couple of weeks so that we can keep the program alive. The Education for Ministry (EFM) group at St. Dunstan's is in danger of disbanding due to not meeting minimum membership requirements. For the last several years EFM at St. Dunstan's has equipped individuals for effective lay ministry, and has had a life-changing influence on the personal spirituality of group members.

Go back in time to the days of WWII at St. Alban's in Sussex on Sunday August 16.  In cooperation with the community's living time-line, St. Alban's will doing an authentic Episcopal Holy Communion Service persons serving in the military would have experienced during WWII.  This service comes from the actual book of worship and prayers given to soldiers and sailors from that era; an abbreviated edition will be given to all who attend to take home with them.  The booklet not only contains the Holy Communion Service but other prayers for persons serving in the military.  This special service will also feature WWII re-enactors, special blessings for WWII veterans, as well as lifting up those who served in WWII and are serving our country today.  Time of service: 7:45am.  History buffs, WWII veterans and/or their families are welcome to join us and experience living history through living worship!  For more information contact St. Alban's at 262-246-4430 or visit www.stalbans-sussex.org .
