General Convention 2009 A Word from your Bishop
Dear Friends in Christ,
I write to you as the 76th General Convention draws to a close. This convention has been very different for me from the conventions in 2003 and 2006. I attribute this to a number of factors. Part of this is the fact that is my third General Convention and thus I am more familiar with how it works. Another reason is that we did not have the additional task of electing a presiding bishop. Most importantly, this convention had a much better spirit characterized by deep and respectful listening to the positions and concerns of others and an absence of the "party spirit" condemned by scripture that so dominated previous gatherings. It felt a lot to me like the respectful listening with a place for everyone that I have sought to build with you in our diocese throughout my episcopate. The renewed focus on mission as the heartbeat of our common life was a breath of fresh air, breathing new life into our work through the Holy Spirit. Click to read rest of article

Hope for Dane County
Six Episcopal faith communities are meeting August 12 at 7 pm to explore the Community of Hope program and talk about making commitments to set up multi-congregational based training center in the Madison Area. St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent St, Madison, will be hosting this meeting. People from St. Andrew's, St. Dunstan's, Good Shepherd, St. Luke's, and Grace Churches as well as St. Francis House will be gathering as foundational organizations for a Community of Hope which will be open to all churches. Community of Hope is a 14-session program to train people in pastoral care rooted in Benedictine spirituality. After clarifying their ministry and training in caring for others, participants in this program go on to minister in hospitals, homes, prisons, with youth, with the homeless and more. If you are interested in this program, get more information and attend this meeting. More information about Community of Hope is available at www.coh-international.com and from Barb Lentz at jandb1624@sbcglobal.net . For information about the organizational meeting in Madison contact Fr. Bob Lambert at rector@stdunstans.com . |
The Venerable Thomas Winslow Joins Dragoons
The Ven. Thomas F. Winslow, Chaplain to Bishop Miller, has just returned from Norwalk, Connecticut where he took part in "Patriot Days," which is celebrated once very 5 years. This year was the 230th anniversary of the burning of Norwalk by the British in the midst of the Revolutionary War. Tom serves as chaplain to Sheldon's Horse - 2nd Light Dragoons, a re-enactment of a Revolutionary War troop that served in the Continental Army. Tom joined the unit in 2006 after learning that he is a descendant of Lemuel Cook, the last surviving member of Sheldon's Horse, who died in 1866 at the age of 107! The photo shows Tom with another member of the unit, Rick Sarvas. In the bottom photo, Tom has switched from chaplains garb to the uniform of the mounted troopers.

Education for Ministry
Education for Ministry (EFM) is a 4-year theological distance education program through the University of the South (Sewanee). If you have ever considered becoming a part of EFM, please prayerfully consider whether the time might be right for you now. We need to find one or two new students in the next couple of weeks so that we can keep the program alive. The Education for Ministry (EFM) group at St. Dunstan's is in danger of disbanding due to not meeting minimum membership requirements. For the last several years EFM at St. Dunstan's has equipped individuals for effective lay ministry, and has had a life-changing influence on the personal spirituality of group members.

Cathedral Book Sale July 30-August 4
(by Patricia Nakamura) Medieval alchemists struggled to turn lead into gold. The people of All Saints' Cathedral in Milwaukee have for more than 25 years practiced a more useful alchemy. They turn books into bread.
This year, the 28th annual Great Hunger Book Sale begins on July 30, with more than 40,000 used books filling the Guild Hall dining room, library, hallways, a Sunday school classroom, and several steps leading to second-floor offices. Sunday's coffee hour is relegated to the kitchen. If previous years' sales are any indication, about $25,000 will have been raised by the last day, August 4, for local, national, and international food pantries, meal programs, and disaster relief.
