 Rocks!

The first week of Camp Webb, held July 5-10, went off without a hitch!  We had a great week filled with exploring a variety of Bible stories and how they apply to our lives.  From Creation to Christmas, Samuel to the Disciples, the Ten Commandments and the Good Samaritan, we covered it all!  We were blessed to have Fr. Tom Holtzen and Fr. Mark Moore out to camp as guest Chaplains to celebrate Eucharist with us on Wednesday and Friday respectively.  As one of the campers was leaving, she said to the staff, "Thanks for helping make the new Camp Webb rock!"

We are now in the midst of week two, and again are having a great time with the kids as we explore how the Bible interacts with our lives.  This week, we have Fr. Jim Kaestner and Deacon Leigh Vicens joining us for services on Wednesday and Thursday.

Stay tuned for dates for Camp Webb 2010 in the next few months!

If you have any questions about Camp Webb, please contact The Rev. Shannon Kelly, Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation at kelly@diomil.org or go to www.campwebb.org .
Ark photoBuilding an Ark at Holy Communion, LakeGeneva
During Lent this year, we thought it would be "meet and right" for the parish to engage in some outreach.  We took on building an Ark for Heifer Project International.  An Ark raises $5,000.00 to fund a variety of projects Heifer International does throughout the world.  Sue Gootsan, who is a vestry member and our outreach person, engaged the children of the parish to present Heifer Project International to us and set our goal; build an Ark by Easter!   click for photo

Heifer was founded in 1947 as a global project organization which seeks to abate hunger.  Their motto is adapted from a saying by Lao Tzu, "Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime."

The way it works is by people purchasing "animals" which are sold for a various amounts of money; a flock of chickens is $20.00, a pig is $120.00 etc.  By means of our donations, HPI sends animals, plants, honey bees and the like to a "project" anywhere in the world.  They also send a teacher who lives with the family or families and teaches them how to use this wonderful gift.

The family who receives the gift promises to pass on the first born or the first fruits of their gift to a neighbor, and to teach them how to use their new gift.  HPI builds communities as well as inspires others.

During Lent, we put up an ark which was created by one of our parishioners. The ark has slots for a variety of animals.  On another board there were images of these animals, each with the amount of money they cost.

Well, long story short, our parish bought an Ark and then some, raising $5206.01 through 2 Easter!

Just imagine how many people a simple giving will help! Imagine what we could all do together if we just offered our spare change week by week!

ASC sketchCathedral Book Sale July 30-August 4

(by Patricia Nakamura) Medieval alchemists struggled to turn lead into gold. The people of All Saints' Cathedral in Milwaukee have for more than 25 years practiced a more useful alchemy. They turn books into bread.

This year, the 28th annual Great Hunger Book Sale begins on July 30, with more than 40,000 used books filling the Guild Hall dining room, library, hallways, a Sunday school classroom, and several steps leading to second-floor offices. Sunday's coffee hour is relegated to the kitchen. If previous years' sales are any indication, about $25,000 will have been raised by the last day, August 4, for local, national, and international food pantries, meal programs, and disaster relief.
