CDI: Church Development Institute's Class of 2009
We are pleased to announce our 2009 CDI graduating class. Teams were from St. John in the Wilderness, Elkhorn, St. Bartholomew's in Pewaukee, St. Alban's in Sussex, St. Matthew's in Kenosha, Trinity Janesville and St. Luke's in Madison. Here are a few things participants said about the CDI experience: "The mutual accountability and support of team members helped in the learning process." "I've learned it takes a lot of relationship building to make people comfortable with what is going on" "The learning is not from books but in the new relationships gained and how other parishes become labs for our learning. This cannot be done in one or two weekends. Be prepared lead, take risks and be vulnerable." "There is safety in the group to take risks and realizing confusion is part of the process- understanding comes at different levels and times" "Relationship building and trust development needs to be intentional for it to happen." A new class begins in September. Registration form and brochure are on the websitewebsite under Congregational Development |

ECW Spring Meeting &UTO Ingathering
(This article was written by Donna Nattinger-Holtz of Resurrection, Mukwonago)
The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Mukwonago hosted a luncheon May 16, with seven different parishes present. The day started with registration, a continental breakfast and Holy Eucharist. Connie Ott, President of the ECW, passed on some of the history of the ECW as she explained the cross she wears. Since 1875 the cross has been passed though the years to the next ECW president. It's engraved with the dates and initials of each president. Another piece of history was passed among us during Eucharist as the official collection plate was used to collect the UTO offering and told who donated. (read more) |

Bishop Griswold at DeKoven Center
Former Presiding Bishop Frank Tracy Griswold came to spend an evening at the DeKoven Center May 13, and brought warmth, erudition, and reunion to what turned out to be a dark and stormy night. Bishop Griswold was elected Presiding Bishop at the Philadelphia General Convention of 1997, and served until his retirement in 2006. His installation at the Washington National Cathedral in January of 1998 was a solemn and beautiful and joyous event, even though it occurred on the heels of another storm that pushed the arrival of many guests and participants to an anxious just-in-time. The evening's presentation was a part of DeKoven's New Wine series, and was officially titled "The Episcopal Church: Gift and Challenge." Bishop Griswold did not discuss directly the current disturbances in the church, but nodded to an icon of James DeKoven, remarking that he had visited the tomb during an afternoon walk. "The 1979 Prayer Book incorporates many of the things for which he was vilified 100 years before." A thunderclap provided exclamation point, and the Bishop noted, "There is always something provocative; and life goes on." Bishop Griswold reminded listeners of the Anglican "co-existence via common prayer," our historic ability to hold opposite viewpoints in tension. He pictured the many architectural styles of Canterbury Cathedral as a metaphor for the whole church; all are held in creative tension by the cathedral's mighty arches. "Truth is not either/or but both/and. Orthodoxy has the capacity for paradox." We draw strength from our differences, he said, even as the body is made up of many different limbs. He reminded us that "the Gospel is local, too," and changes in worship, loss of the familiar, can result in deep grief and anger. "The loss of the 1928 Prayer Book, for example; that caused deep insecurity." Paul counseled patience and endurance, he noted. "Certitude can be the enemy of truth." The Presiding Bishop said he hadn't really retired but now "I don't have a staff to blame" for finding himself very busy. Last year he taught at a seminary in Cuba run by the Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches. He will do a series of lectures in Japan. "I've done a book, retreats, clergy conferences. I walk the dog, I take the car in for service." And his wife, Phoebe, who in Chicago ran the first urban Heifer Project, in the daunting Robert Taylor Homes, will shortly become the president of the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem. This tormented part of the ancient world has long been close to the Griswolds' hearts.(article by Patricia Colby Nakamura, Diocese of Milwaukee; photo of Bishop Miller and Bishop Griswold at the DeKoven presentation was taken by David Skidmore, Diocese of Chicago) |

Camp Webb
a great formation experience
Sending your kids to Camp Webb is a great way for them to have a camping experience centered around God in God's creation. Each day at camp will have a theme, worship, small groups, fun and games and I'm sure they will make great memories.
Please know that we are committed to getting every child to camp who wants to come, so please don't let money stand in the way! Scholarships are available. It promises to be a great summer and we hope your child can join us! For more information contact The Rev. Shannon Kelly at kelly@diomil.org or go to www.campwebb.org . |
It Will Not Rain!
The Cathedral's Absolutely Terrific Rummage Sale will be held this year on Saturday, May 30, from 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon, unless, of course, everything is sold before that! At 1:00 commences the Bag Sale: whatever can be stuffed into a bag for five bucks.
As in previous years, it will take place in the garden, and will include a Bake Sale.
Donations for sale, edible and otherwise, will be immensely appreciated. Alas, the Cathedral has no storage space (it's full of books for the Hunger Book Sale in August) so items must be dropped off that morning, any time after 7:00.
Yummy goodies! Fantastic bargains! A beautiful day to be outside!
Y'all come!

Safeguarding God's Children Information
We are planning on holding some Safeguarding God's Children Trainings this summer and Fall. If you or someone in your parish needs to attend the training, please let The Rev. Shannon Kelly know. We are also trying to find all the Safeguarding God's Children kits around the Diocese. If you have a Diocesan kit, can you please send The Rev. Shannon Kelly an email ( kelly@diomil.org) and let her know you have it? Or if your church owns a kit, and would be willing to lend it out to another church, please let her know that as well. FYI, The Diocese of Milwaukee has rewritten it's Misconduct Prevention Policy. Your parish should have received one, and if they did not, they can find it on our diocesan website. The Rev. Shannon Kelly Bishop's Assistant for Christian Formation
