Lenten Prayer
Holy God, by the grace of Jesus Christ
you know the tests and trials we face. Walk with us through this wilderness. Come to us with ministers of healing and visit us with messengers of hope, so that we may return to you in faith, believing the good news of the gospel; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Free Copyright Compliance Class
The Presbytery of Lake Huron is sponsoring a FREE all-day Copyright Compliance training course on Monday, April 16th at Flint-First. Training will be led by Susan Fontaine Godwin, President and Founder of Christian Copyright Solutions in Alabama. She has been working with and training church personnel in copyright compliance for over 16 years. She is also a professor of Copyright Law and the Church and Intellectual Property at the University of Mobile and author of Solving the Puzzle of Copyright Compliance: Why & How We Honor Copyrights.
Susan conducted an hour long class at the Big Tent in Indianapolis last summer for the Presbyterian Communicators Conference. The general consensus of those who attended was that this really could and should be an all day class. The presbytery's Coordinating Team agreed and approved funding to enable our congregations to be trained free of charge.
All church personnel - clergy, staff and volunteers - are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this unique opportunity.
Lunch will be provided and will include vegetarian options.
REGISTER TODAY
Not sure if you need to attend? Click here to go to our new Copyright Compliance page to read about some reasons why congregations of any size need to be trained. Articles will be added on a regular basis so check back often.
"This summer, Susan taught a copyright session at the Metro Media Ministers Association conference. These Media Ministers of the largest Southern Baptist Churches in America soaked up Susan's clear information and practical advice, but most of all we found someone who loves helping churches. Did she sell us anything? Absolutely! She sold us on the value of maintaining our church's witness by complying with the copyright laws."

Did you have your arm twisted to serve on your congregation's Nominating Committee? Did you hear the whistle blow as you were railroaded into serving? Or did you feel God calling you to this important function? However you got there, we are offering an opportunity for you to be trained to do this very important job of discerning who in your congregation would best serve as church officers. On March 6th, during the meeting of Presbytery at Flint-First, those serving on Nominating Committees will have an opportunity to gather separately for training in this important function. Rev. Mary Anne Evans-Justin and Elder David Justin will lead this training. Commissioners to the March 6 Presbytery meeting: Bring with you two members of your congregation's Nominating Committee! Using Technology In Church Services
Mt. Pleasant-First uses and encourages the use of technology during worship. One of the ways they encourage members to use technology is to e-mail the Sunday worship bulletin to members each week so that they may read them on their smartphones, tablets or other mobile device during the service. This makes it particularly nice for those who need large print editions. They can adjust the font on their mobile device to whatever size is comfortable for them. It also gives a preview of what to look forward to in church Sunday morning.

Lessons From A Loss: Copyright Violations For The Church
This article appeared in the Winter 2012 Insurance Board newsletter and is used with permission. The Insurance Board is the insurance carrier for the presbytery.
Texting, tweeting, YouTube, Facebook and the internet are the "new norm" for families who are active, mobile, and often worlds apart. For many churches, the use of the internet and social media is becoming the norm to inform congregants and capture prospective members.
While the dangers of social media are well-known with respect to predators and financial scams, less heard about are the risks around "intellectual property" to include music, art, and literature. While there is a "religious service exemption" for copyrighted materials, the use of the material outside the sanctuary is not covered, in particular, transferring material to web pages. Here is what happened.
A lady wrote a poem. It became a hit, especially in funerals and memorial services. She created an internet business around the poem and added related writings and products. It is quite alright to quote the poem as part of a religious service. However, some churches published the poem on their websites. After the Insurance Board received two claims from the author regarding said poem, an investigation has determined that she employs staff to find and enforce copyright violations, and demand compensation. She is entitled to enforce her copyright.
Recently a pastor asked about putting sermons on YouTube. She explained that her sermons commonly contain quotations of others' copyrighted materials and musical performances. While we support the use of social media to further the interests of the church and its ministries, we have advised her to purge them of copyrighted material in the authorship phase if she wishes to post them online.
If sermons are to have a life past the sanctuary they must be e-Ready! e-Safe! e-Legal!
The Insurance Board frequently has free webinars regarding topics such as copyright compliance, use of social media, and preventing child and sexual abuse. Because the presbytery is covered by them, all their materials are also available to our congregations. Click here to go to a listing of upcoming and recent webinars (Select Webinar Information on the right side of the page). To view a webinar that has already aired, click on Public Sessions (if it does not already direct you there), Click on the Join tab them click on the Open button of the one you would like to view. Please note there are 2 pages of listings and most of the ones regarding the above mentioned topics are on the second page.
