Bi-Weekly Brief

"Rediscovering our mutual partnership in Jesus Christ."

January 4, 2012

A To Start A New Year

A new year is unfolding like a blossom with petals

curled tightly concealing the beauty within.

Lord, let this year be filled with

the things that are truly good

with the comfort of warmth in our relationships,

with the strength to help those who need our help

and the humility and openness

to accept help from others.

As we make our resolutions for the year ahead,

let us go forward with great hope

that all things can be possible

with Your help and guidance."

Payroll Tax Cut Temporarily Extended into 2012

Congress has finally resolved the question of whether or not to extend the payroll tax holiday that was enacted in 2011. From now until at least February 29, 2012 the Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011 has been extended. This extends the two percentage point payroll tax cut for employees, continuing the reduction of their Social Security tax withholding rate from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent of wages paid through Feb. 29, 2012. This reduced SS withholding will have no effect on employees' future Social Security benefits.

Church Treasurers should implement the new payroll tax rate as soon as possible in 2012 but not later than January 31, 2012. For any Social Security tax over-withheld during January, treasurers should make an offsetting adjustment in employees' pay as soon as possible but not later than March 31, 2012.

A copy of this notice has been sent to clergy serving churches and Commissioned Ruling Elders.

PCUSA LogoAnnual Statistics

It's that time of year again...time for the reporting of the Annual Statistics to General Assembly.  Information was sent to all Clerks of Session in December that included the congregation's login information.

All of the links and forms that are needed to complete the reports may be found on the Annual Statistics page of our website.  All reports are due by February 22, 2012.

As a reminder, only the session needs to approve the report, not the congregation. Information can be entered and edited at any point. Please do not wait until the deadline of February 22nd nears, the system slows down so much that it is often difficult to even gain access by early February. Start entering information now and edit later if needed.

Please note:  While the usernames have remained the same, GA has changed the passwords for all of the congregations this year. In each case, the only thing that has changed is that they have added an exclamation point (!) to the end of each password.

If you have any questions, please contact Staci Percy or Ted McCulloch.
Free Resources

Following an inventory of the presbytery's Resource Center this fall we now have numerous items available for free to anyone who would like them.  Items include videos, books, VBS kits and other resources.

For a complete list click here or visit the Resource Center page of our website.

Ashes To Fire: The Transformation of Our Souls led by Tom Long

February 18
8:30am to 3:30pm

Lent/Easter/Pentecost: Ashes to Fire is an opportunity for the transformation of our souls. As Jesus' life, death, and resurrection are retold,Jesus' story becomes our story. May our hearts be open to the touch of God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. How can this season be different from previous Easter cycles? This day retreat on Transfiguration Weekend is designed to open new avenues of transformation.

Session One: "The Churches at the Four Corners"

We will spend some time sitting in the pews of the Church of St. Mark, the
Church of St. Matthew, the Church of St. Luke, and the Church of St. John. How do each of these congregations understand the gospel and the nature of the Christian life? What resources for the Lenten journey can each of the churches provide?

Session Two: "Out of the Depths: Praying with the Psalms in Lent"
We will explore the psalms as sources of strength and faith in the "winter seasons" of our life.

Session Three: "Something Old, Something New: Faithful and Vital Worship in a Windstorm of Change"
In a time when worship styles and changes are swirling around in the church, we will examine some ancient traditions that are worth holding onto and some places where the Spirit is doing a new thing among us.

Fellowship Nights With The Great Lakes Loons

The Great Lakes Loons are excited to once again reach out to and partner with the congregations of the Great Lakes Bay Region for the 2012 Fellowship Nights at Dow Diamond.  One of our top priorities is to build and maintain strong relationships throughout the region, which is why we want to invite you to join us for a group outing at Dow Diamond on one of our Fellowship Nights.  While we expect to have church groups at the ballpark every night, we have dedicated a few special nights as Fellowship Nights.

Fellowship Nights will be held on Sunday, June 3rd; Thursday, July 12th; and Tuesday, August 7th.  These nights provide a great platform to bring your congregation together with other churches from the region while having fun with Lou E. Loon and the 2012 Loons team.  These outings are perfect for church members of all ages and a great way to raise awareness in the community.  Churches in attendance on Fellowship Nights will be recognized with a display on the video board as well as a welcoming announcement over the public address system.

Fully utilizing these Fellowship Nights for your church is easy.  Once you have decided on a date, the Loons will help you every step of the way, from promotions to securing ticket orders and the distribution of tickets.  We want this to be a fun experience for everyone involved and something your church can look forward to every season.

If you are interested in planning an outing for your church or would like more information, please contact Matt Hoffman, Group Sales Coordinator at 989-837-6136.

Communicate
Communications As A Ministry

Your storytelling is powerful.

It can call others to participate in our ministries, bringing them closer to God and inspiring them to give to mission. As communicators, our role is to lift up what is happening throughout the church. It is a ministry, but one you do not have to do alone.

Invite others to tell the story of their congregation and call to mission through writing, pictures and video. Share those stories with those outside the church, within your synod and throughout PC (USA) by utilizing Presbyterians Today magazine, the Presbyterian Mission Yearbook and the News and Announcements on www.pcusa.org.

It is through your witness that the stories of Christmas and of all God's good works are shared. May you and your family be blessed this Christmas season and have a happy New Year.

Yours in Christ,

Does Your Church Have A Digital Advocate?

For years, churches have frequently appointed a missions advocate (by whatever name) to be a channel for information and challenge to the fellowship about worldwide missions. Coordinators for other areas of ministry are also commonplace.

There is now surely the same opportunity for churches to appoint someone to be the church advocate for the use of digital media in evangelism and discipleship.

Mavens needed?

Such a person would obviously need to be a web maven - a networker who knows a wide variety of online Christian resources/strategies and loves sharing them. They might function like this:

  • be available to consult about ideas and resources
  • write about digital opportunities and resources in the church newsletter
  • share resources in a short focus spot from time to time during meetings
  • explain how church members can use Facebook effectively, especially in relation to sharing the good news appropriately, including how to use the video-clip sharing resource YesHEIs.com
  • encourage people to load online bibles and other resources on their smartphones
  • suggest to those with the appropriate gifts that they consider volunteering as e-mentors with big outreach teams such as TruthMedia.com and GMO
  • point people to, for example, the best online study or youth discipleship resources
  • help the leadership team consider ways the fellowship can develop online strategies

This is a role very distinct from that of an existing missions coordinator or church webmaster, and there should be no automatic assumption that this is something extra that should be placed on them.

A digital advocate should surely not be perceived as a representative for a single website or organization. However, if you produce web content, then it this is surely an ideal opportunity to increase your effectiveness. You could ask your friends and supporters to consider the potential to become an advocate in their own churches, with your content as one of the many resources they might highlight.
