Prayer for Today

 Lord of abundance,
when we love you with our whole being
and love our neighbors as ourselves,
you transform even the most difficult circumstances.
The wintertime of scarcity becomes
the harvest of overflowing generosity.
The despair of isolation becomes
the joy of fellowship.
All praise and thanks to you!

Amen.

Welcome Miller Family
Welcome Andrew Miller and Family

We welcome the Rev. Andrew Miller, his wife Martha and their daughters Lydia and Anna Clare to Mt. Pleasant-First.  Andrew began his service as Pastor at Mt. Pleasant-First on September 11, 2011.

Andrew comes to us from Anchorage Presbyterian Church outside of Louisville, KY.  He is a life-long Presbyterian, grew up in Denton, Texas. With an undergraduate degree in finance and Master's Degrees in both Christian Education and Divinity, he is a Certified Christian Educator in the PC(USA) and has been ordained as a Teaching Elder since 2004. Andrew is married to Martha who grew up in Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Alma College and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She serves in the Office of the General Assembly and the General Assembly Mission Council in the Office of Vocation. She is also a Certified Christian Educator and a Ruling Elder. Lydia, age 12, and Anna Clare, age 8, are their daughters.

Andrew has an identical twin as well as a younger sister and an older brother. He is an avid Minnesota Vikings football fan who loves watching college sports and enjoys working in the yard and running. He ran his first marathon this past May. Andrew likes working with all different ages of people and believes that everyone is a teacher and a learner and that the church, the people, should serve each other while also serving all of God's people outside its walls.

Does Being an Elder Leave You Feeling Like You're Swimming In a Sea of Change?

Our culture is changing, our denomination is changing, our communities are changing and our churches are constantly changing. In the midst of such baffling changes, how can elders lead and shape their congregations to become thriving, committed, Christian communities? The key to our future lies in the foundations of our past and the practices we emphasize today. On October 21 and 22, elders from throughout the Presbytery will gather for a conversation about Futuring the Church.
  • Dr. Jack Stewart, retired professor from Princeton Seminary, resourcing the conversation
  • Elders from across the Presbytery sharing disciple-forming practices
  • Uplifting worship, prayers & praise
  • Practical training on creatives practices that inspire and shape congregations

While walking around the church collecting our items at the conclusion of last week's presbytery meeting at Saginaw-Warren Avenue I noticed something that I thought was rather creative.  In the area where member's pick up various items: magazines, copies of newsletters, etc. I saw a pile of half sheets of paper that caught my eye.  The predominate words were "Free Pass".  Basically it is a ticket that you give to a neighbor or friend along with a warm welcome to join you at worship at Warren Avenue Presbyterian Church.  I thought this was a very clever idea and wanted to share it with all of our congregations.  You can find a copy of the Free Pass on our website on the Forms and Brochures page.  It is in both PDF and Word formats.
PDA Needs Clean Up Buckets
Bucket
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) in Need of Clean Up Buckets

Many parts of the United States have experienced a large amount of flooding this year due to rapid melting of an above-average snowpack in the Upper Midwest, above-normal precipitation during the spring, and after-effects from Hurricanes Irene and Lee.

One of the ways that PDA helps in response to flooding is through Gift of the Heart kit Clean-up buckets.

These buckets are extremely helpful as a first step in the recovery process. Unfortunately, the large number of disasters has pretty much exhausted the Church World Service supply of Clean-up buckets.  A shipment of 250 Clean-up buckets was recently sent to a Presbyterian church near Binghamton, New York, to help that community begin the recovery process, but more are needed for other locations.

Please prayerfully consider participating in this important mission. Instructions for putting together the buckets can be found on the PDA website.

Do You Know?
PW Logo
Do You Know What Each Item in the PW Logo Represent?

The outline of the central figure forms a cross that represents Presbyterian women engrafted in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The right figure holds a book to guide her reading, studying and praying.

The left figure reaches out to care for others.

The circle represents the church worldwide, where women offer their gifts and talents in the midst of the global community to work for justice and peace.

The uplifted arms of the central figure reach out to embrace a just peace.

The relationship between the three figures depicts lives of wholeness rather than turmoil.  The three women have no distinct features.  They represent all women.  The shapes surrounding them express energy, strength and openness.
