Prayer for Today
Loving God, we offer our thanks for this world and for the privilege of serving its people. By your Holy Spirit, inspire our vision and our responsiveness. Help us see just how deep and vast your call is for our engagement. Help us to act with love and faithfulness. This we ask in the name of the one who came to reveal your reconciling love, your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Does Being an Elder Leave You Feeling Like You're Swimming In a Sea of Change?
Our culture is changing, our denomination is changing, our communities are changing and our churches are constantly changing. In the midst of such baffling changes, how can elders lead and shape their congregations to become thriving, committed, Christian communities? The key to our future lies in the foundations of our past and the practices we emphasize today. On October 21 and 22, elders from throughout the Presbytery will gather for a conversation about Futuring the Church.
- Dr. Jack Stewart, retired professor from Princeton Seminary, resourcing the conversation
- Elders from across the Presbytery sharing disciple-forming practices
- Uplifting worship, prayers & praise
- Practical training on creatives practices that inspire and shape congregations

 What's That Funny Square Thing?
Have you noticed these popping up all over lately? Wonder what they are? They are called QR Codes. The "QR" being short for Quick Response. They were originally used in the automotive industry but have become very popular in the general population due to its fast readability and comparatively large storage capacity and the prevalence of smartphones.
They are easily generated - for free - on several websites, one of the most popular one is Kaywa. You just type or paste the web address that you want the code to link to and it generates a code and picture for you that you can place just about anywhere. You can generate a QR Code to link to your website, your Facebook page (in fact the code seen here will link to the presbytery's Facebook page), your church's phone number, text to be read by the viewer or SMS message.
So why would you want to use them? Here are a few ideas:
- Place a QR Code in your bulletin linking to your Facebook page encouraging members and visitors to "like" your page for regular updates on happenings within the church
- Put a QR Code that links to your website on the poster that you placed in the local grocery store advertising your upcoming Holiday Craft Fair or Fish Fry so they can get more information and add the date to their calendar
- Add a QR Code linking the church's phone number on the pastor's - or other employee's - business cards
- Add a QR Code containing text (up to 250 characters) of a bible verse, event details, contact information, etc to just about any publication that you have
When the PC(USA) held the Big Tent in Indianapolis this summer stores, restaurants and other businesses all around town had posters on their doors welcoming attendees to their city. On the poster was a QR Code that when read by a smartphone linked users to the VisitIndy website that is designed to help you find anything you could possibly want in the area: restaurants, shopping centers, local attractions, etc. Not only was it a very hospitable showing it was also very helpful to those unfamiliar with the area.
(Note: There is a very similar code that is also widely used called a Data Matrix Code. It is very similar is looks to the QR code however, there are some licensing issues with Data Matrix Codes. The owners of the QR Code patent rights has chosen not to exercise them making them available to anyone.)
