Strategically Small Church

Greetings,

The Thumb Ministry Group is a gathering of small churches in the Thumb of Michigan.  We are congregations of the Lake Huron Presbytery.  We are small in number and are churches living in small towns.  We have connected for mutual support and cooperation in ministry.

We discovered the recently published book, The Strategically Small Church, by Brandon O'Brien, and have found much of value to us.  We believe the materials of the book have much to offer small churches in helping them, and each of us, to rediscover our self-confidence even though remaining small in numbers.  We have found this book to be helpful for congregational leaders, our elders and deacons, and our church members at large.

We have developed and scheduled a one-day conference seminar with Brandon O'Brien and want to extend an invitation to attend to other congregations.  We envision Brandon O'Brien will share his insights, be open to conversation and questions, and provide time for inter-active conversations for each congregational group.

A light continental breakfast snack will be provided during registration.  A soup and sandwich buffet at lunch is also included in the registration fee of $15 per person attending.

For more information or registration, you may call the office of the First Presbyterian Church, Croswell, 810-679-3352, or e-mail at: 1stpresbycroswell@sbcglobal.net.  Kate Smith, the office secretary is available 9am to 12Noon, Tuesday through Friday.  Rev Ken Hetzel is generally available in the afternoons as well.  The office answering machine will record any questions if no one is present and we promise a response as quickly as possible.

We truly believe this will be a helpful and hopeful opportunity for those smaller congregations of which many of us are part.   We hope that this is an opportunity in which you may be able to join us.

Blessings in Christ,

The Sister Presbyterian Churches of the Thumb Ministry Group

Tending the Adolescent Soul

Tending the Adolescent Soul

Mark Yaconelli - writer, speaker, retreat leader, spiritual director, community activist, youth worker, storyteller, disco dancer, husband, and father - will lead two seminars for youth workers, pastors, volunteers, and parents.

Seminar 1 - "Wonder, Fear, and Longing: the Spiritual Lives of Teens" We minister among young people who are trained to no longer see the presence of God in the world, within a culture that is putting the souls of our young people to sleep. We need to develop ministries that help young people not only absorb the stories and beliefs of the Christian faith but more importantly cultivate the heart and life of Jesus.

Seminar 2 - "Youth, Worship and the 8-Second Attention Span" How does the church tend the teenage soul in a worship environment created by and for adults?

National CLP Confernce

The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary will host a National Conference for Commissioned Lay Pastors (CLP) and CLP Candidates in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  The 2011 National CLP Conference, June 9-11, 2011, will feature Dr. Thomas Gillespie, Emeritus President and Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary as the keynote speaker.

The conference will provide an opportunity for CLPs from around the country to share ideas and visit with others who are serving in this unique calling.  Basic CLP classes will be offered for those candidates who have not yet been commissioned, while advanced CLP classes will be available as continuing education for those who have completed the foundational requirements of the Presbyterian Church.  Opportunities for fellowship and relaxation will also be provided, including an evening cruise on the Mississippi River.

Keynote speaker Dr. Thomas Gillespie is emeritus president and professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, NJ).  Retired from Princeton after 21 years, Dr. Gillespie oversaw the development of several significant academic endeavors at the seminary, including the Center for Barth Studies.  A graduate of Pepperdine University and Princeton Seminary, he received a Ph.D. in New Testament from Claremont Graduate School in 1971 and was invited to become Princeton Seminary's fifth president in 1983. A New Testament scholar and ordained Presbyterian minister, Dr. Gillespie is author of numerous articles and reviews.  In 1994, Eerdmans Press published his book, The First Theologians: A Study in Early Christian Prophecy.  Active in retirement, Dr. Gillespie has taught internationally for the China Graduate School of Theology in Hong Kong offering a course on Galatians.

The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary has been on the cutting edge of Commissioned Lay Pastor education.  Over the past ten years, the seminary has had over 3,000 registrants in its CLP distance learning program.  According to University of Dubuque President Jeffrey Bullock, "Our church is in a time of incredible transition.  As we explore new models for providing pastoral leadership, Commissioned Lay Pastors will play an increasingly important role.  Our seminary is committed to providing quality preparation for these leaders.  This conference is another way we can support their ministry."

The registration fee for the conference is $200, which includes tuition for one class, admission to the keynote addresses, and two group meals.  Registration information and a registration form for the conference are available on the UDTS website at http://udts.dbq.edu.  You may register by contacting Ms. Dana Weitz by phone at 563-589-3691 or email at dweitz@dbq.edu.  Pastors and other church leaders may also attend.  CEUs are available upon request.  The registration deadline is May 16, 2011.

The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary is an ecumenical seminary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), located in Dubuque, Iowa.

Congregational Mission Trip

Imagine every member of your congregation involved in an international mission trip for six weeks!

Not possible?

Yes, it is possible if the mission comes to you through the Synod of the Covenant Mission to the USA Program. You can bring a church leader from Cuba or Mexico to your congregation from September 28 to November 9, 2011 for about the cost of sending one person to Cuba or Mexico.  Everyone in your congregation would have the opportunity to learn about another part of the world and the challenges facing Christians there. Each person can gain a fresh perspective on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, acquire a deeper understanding of the global nature of Christ's church, and be challenged to greater faithfulness.

Your "missionary" will be prepared to preach, teach, and share fully in the life of your church. If you would like to develop an interest in world mission, you can learn more about bringing the global church to your doorstep for six weeks by going to www.synodofthecovenant.org and clicking on the Mission to the USA globe. Frequently Asked Questions and an application are available on line.

Want to learn more?

Contact the Mission to the USA Coordinator, Karen Nottelmann at (213) 652-1056 or musa@synodofthecovenant.org.

Youth Mission Blast 2011
"In the same way,let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."  Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

The Presbytery of Detroit invites youth from Lake Huron - either youth groups or individuals - to join them this summer for Youth Mission Blast 2011.

This is their second year hosting youth groups from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

They have some wonderful opportunities for youth to come together and experience mission in and around the city of Detroit. Just in case your church has not decided on a mission trip, or feel like you only have one or two youth, the Presbytery of Detroit would love to host your youth in their presbytery.

The mission experience begins with a youth gathering on Sunday evening and ends on Friday morning with breakfast and a youth worship service. The cost is only $150 and includes lodging, dinner each evening, a t-shirt and a fun/educational experience.

They hope that they can connect all youth through mission and other activities as they travel on their Christian walk.

Two sessions are available: June 19-24 and July 10-15.

Faith Nights with the Loons
Loons

The Great Lakes Loons are excited to once again offer our Faith Days to you and your congregation. One of our top priorities is to build and maintain strong relationships within the community, which is why we want to invite you to join us for a group outing at Dow Diamond.  We expect to have church groups at the ballpark every night, but we have dedicated a few special nights as Faith Nights at Dow Diamond

Faith Nights will be held on Wednesday, June 1; Tuesday, June 28; and Sunday, August 14.  These games will feature faith-themed promotions such as post-game entertainment.  Churches in attendance on Faith Nights will be recognized with a display on the video board as well as a welcoming announcement over the public address system.

Group outings are a great way to bring your congregation together while having fun in a new and exciting atmosphere.  These outings are perfect for church members of all ages and a great way to raise awareness in the community.

Fully utilizing these Faith Nights for your church is easy.  Once you have decided on a date, the Loons will help you every step of the way, from promotions to securing ticket orders and the distribution of tickets.  We want this to be a fun experience for everyone involved and something your church can look forward to every season.

Get Real About Customer Service

Get Real about Customer Service

By Tom Ehrich

In the old cartoons, customer service happened at the "complaints window," where an angry customer confronted a harried clerk, and everyone lost.

Then came telephone banks to handle a myriad of problems whose diversity seemed to catch vendors unprepared. That only got worse when companies outsourced customer service to off-shore teams whose minimal language skills and on-screen prompts drove many a customer to change vendors.

More recently, companies have tried not answering phones at all, but referring customers to online Frequently Asked Questions web pages, where they can try a self-help approach, maybe get clues from other frustrated customers, maybe just go away.

What does this have to do with churches? Everything. For we, too, are in the customer service business. Our inattention to the basics of customer service are undermining our efforts and driving people away.

Here are a few basics. See how your congregation measures up.

Your web site must work

For the vast majority of constituents and prospects, your web site is your front door. Forget about a handsome sign and pretty flowers. People come to your web site first, and if it doesn't work - links don't function, information is poorly organized, site is slow to load, site is "so yesterday" in design - you can say goodbye to those visitors.

Your church telephone must be answered by a person

Forget the phone trees and answering systems. When people call a church, they expect to talk to a living person, not press 1 for this and 2 for that. After normal business hours, people are fine with mechanical answering systems. But during the day, make sure a person, not a machine, picks up the phone. This is a great ministry for volunteers, by the way.

Answer your e-mail right away

Same day is the protocol in business. Your answer could be simply an acknowledgment that the message was received and an answer is coming. In general, try to answer. Other than newsletters and such, people only send e-mail when they have a question or need. Don't ignore them. No more "out of the office" messages, which sound unprofessional, self-protective and unhelpful. If you're away, forward your e-mails to a trusted colleague or volunteer, for them to acknowledge.

Get real about the Sunday morning experience

Many congregations have an unrealistic view of what happens on Sunday morning, both for visitors and for all but total insiders. They don't see the unintended obstacles - doors that are inexplicably locked and rarely labeled, greeters who don't know how to greet, entry points that actually are choke points, inadequate signage (especially rest rooms), circles with "stay away" signs. They don't see the confusion, the last-minute panic to get things ready, the anxiety about starting on time, the distracted worship party. Visitors see all of that, however, and it douses their fire before the opening hymn has begun.

Similar turnoffs happen after worship, from a long line to shake the preacher's hand to a coffee hour where no one is friendly to strangers.

Task a few people with open eyes and minds to be Sunday process observers. Ask them to see what visitors and most constituents see. From parking the car to leaving the lot 75 minutes later, what actually happens? Pay as much attention to your worshipers' experience as your local grocery devotes to tracking their customers' in-store experience.

What is your "complaints window"?

Every enterprise makes mistakes; every constituent has unrealistic expectations from time to time. How do you handle the friction? You want to have a clearly marked process for voicing issues. And muttering in the parking lot isn't it. A button on your web site, for example, can open a simple e-mail form for registering a complaint, with the promise of prompt response. Keep it businesslike; don't encourage blaming.

These are a few basics in customer service. You will notice others. The key is to think it through and treat people well.
