Church Communications Planning
When I attended the Presbyterian Communicators Network conference last month, I learned so many wonderful things that I am eager to share with all of you. One of the classes that I attended was Church Communication Planning. Sue Washburn offered great advice on how to get started and detailed instructions on how to form a communications plan for churches. Please read the short article on our website and also read through the materials she generously allowed me to share with you. It is very good stuff! |

Tawas Preschool to be Featured in Presbyterians Today Magazine
The following article will appear in an issue of "Presbyterians Today" magazine next year. Congratulations to the congregation and preschool of Tawas Area Presbyterian Church!
For years the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church (a 19 year old congregation near the shores of Lake Huron) wanted to have an active program for youth. The largely retired congregation of 161 members provided Christian learning experiences for youth through Sunday School and by pairing up with local churches and First Presbyterian Church in Bay City, and by sending youth to church camps and the youth Triennium.
Because of local need last year, the church went through the long process of becoming licensed by the state of Michigan as a Pre-School / Day-Care. Now there are 25 preschoolers Monday through Friday morning in a Faith based program directed by Trisha Evans. Our program mission statement, logo, monthly newsletter, details and calendar are now on our church website: http://www.tawaspresby.org/preschool.htm
In addition, there is a Day Care program at 11:30 am each day, followed by a latch-key program complete with tutors. "We are now on the public schools' bus route, and our church is providing ministry to over 50 children daily from 7:00 am to 5:45 p.m." says Pastor Rick Vogeley. The program is operating at full capacity.
The pre-school was proposed at the end of a congregational meeting of brain storming on different ways of how to pay off the mortgage on the new parlor/fellowship hall, after many of our retired members were hit hard by the recession in 2009. "We're still trying to keep up with the mortgage payments, but now the Sunday school rooms, kitchen, and new fellowship hall are filled every day with this new ministry to the community. We will continue to keep following the Lord's lead and trust that the blessings will follow." says Pastor Vogeley.

F acebook and Twitter Evangelism
Social networking sites Facebook and Twitter are revolutionizing the way people connect with each other and churches are beginning to use them not only for communication within the congregation, but also for evangelism and outreach to those outside of the church.
Frank Ciapperino, pastor of an independent community church in Minnesota, posted "10 Reasons Why Your Church Should Be On Facebook ". Ciapperino points out that people are already using Facebook and are more likely to read communications from the church on their Facebook account than they are to read snail mail or email. He also observes that a church website is a one way conversation, but on a church's Facebook page the reader can see "regular people, just like them, posting thoughts, sharing photos, and interacting with one another." Facebook also makes it easier for church members to invite others to join them at church and makes the "unfamiliar seem more familiar, thus helping people muster up the courage to visit on a Sunday." Being on Facebook helps the church celebrate success and rally the troops using a free and fun social networking tool.

Come To The Big Tent
June 30 - July 2, 2011
Indianapolis, IN
The second Big Tent event will follow much the same format as 2009's inaugural gathering, but will include some new conferences.
At the first Big Tent, held in Atlanta in June 2009, 10 conferences of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) met concurrently, allowing participants to attend workshops and meet people from different areas of the denomination.
The 2011 event, held June 30-July 2 in Indianapolis, will do the same.
"You won't get a chance to see as many parts of the church in one place as you will at Big Tent," said Kerry Rice, manager of the General Assembly meeting service. Rice was speaking to the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly, meeting here Oct. 27-29.
Two groups that had conferences at the 2009 event - Presbyterian Health Education and Welfare Association (PHEWA) and Stewardship and Investment - will not participate in the second Big Tent, Rice said.
However, three new groups will be at the 2011 event:
Groups from 2009 that will also be at the 2011 event:
- Healthy Ministries Conference
- Presbyterian Communicators Network Conference
- National Multicultural Church Conference
- Evangelism and Church Growth
- National Elders Conference
- Peacemaking Conference
- Racial Ethnic and Immigrants Convocation
Pathways, a theological and practical training program for youth leaders and youth grades 9-12, will also be meeting in Indianapolis at the same time as Big Tent, enabling participants of both conferences to worship together.
Two of three Big Tent preachers have been determined: The Rev. J. Herbert Nelson, director of the Office of Public Witness in Washington, and the Rev. Serene Jones, president and professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Organizers are anticipating 1,600-1,700 participants at the 2011 Big Tent. They hope to have an event webpage by the end of the year and to open registration by February. Registration is $285, the same as the 2009 fee.

GA Economic Crisis Statement Nominations sought to help with economic and peacemaking studies
The Reverend Gradye Parsons, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), today announced the availability of the report, "Living Through Economic Crisis: The Church's Witness in Troubled Times"
This social involvement report, written by the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP), was approved by the 219th General Assembly (2010). The assembly also directed the Stated Clerk to make the report available to all PC(USA) congregations.
Along with this report, the assembly authorized ACSWP, a standing committee of the General Assembly, to develop a study with recommendations on "the long term implications of our current economic trends and practices, including their impact on the church itself."
The Advocacy Committee on Racial Ethnic Concerns and the Advocacy Committee on Women's Concerns will be consulted in the formation of this study.
