Bi-Weekly Brief
Presbytery of Lake Huron
"Rediscovering our mutual partnership
in Jesus Christ"

September  29, 2010
October is Clergy Appreciation Month and Sunday, October 10th is Clergy Appreciation Day.  So in honor of all our clergy here is a poem for you.  Thank you so much for all of the work that you do.

God's Instrument
This pastor appreciation poem is about how God uses pastors in our lives.

I see the hands that hold God's word
And fold in prayer to seek His will.
I see the feet that walk the path
And offers of praise as from lofty hill.
I see the hands that serve Him well,
The ears that seek to hear His call,
The mouth that speaks truth and wisdom,
The busy feet that carry the message to all.
I see the heart that was priked and entered
When God's man answered the gospel call
And yielded His life as a humble servant,
A man who is willing, as was Apostle Paul.
I see all of this as he stands in the pulpit,
An instrument through which God speaks
The words of wisdom, of love and peace,
To lead and guide all those whom God seeks.

Despite overall membership decline, some good news

Louisville, KY
Even casual observers of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are likely aware that the membership of the denomination has decreased steadily for quite some time. However, not all of the news about the PC(USA) is bad news.  Consider these findings from the recently released Comparative Statistics 2009
  • There were 20 new church developments in 2009.
  • Membership increased in 13 presbyteries (North Puget Sound, Northwest, San Juan, Twin Cities Area, Midwest Hanmi, St. Andrew, Atlantic Korean-American, Boston, Eastern Korean, Eastern Oregon, Kendall, Sacramento, and Hanmi). The numbers of racial ethnic candidates for ministry increased.
  • Investment income increased.
  • Asian membership increased.
  • There was an increase in Asian leadership (elders, deacons, and active clergy).
  • The number of congregations without pastoral leadership decreased.
  • There was an increase in the number of female ministers and the number of congregations with a female head of staff, solo pastor, or co-pastor.
Comparative Statistics 2009, released recently, is an annual publication of the Research Services office that tracks trends for the denomination in the areas of membership, ministers, and financial data for congregations.  The resource summarizes this information for the denomination and often by synod and presbytery.

This year's edition features an introductory easy, "Membership Change in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A):  Trends in Gains and Losses," by Jack Marcum, coordinator of Research Services of the General Assembly Mission Council.  Referring to the overall membership loss for 2009, Marcum points out that many Presbyterians were working last year to increase gains or to reduce losses in membership.  He notes that "one more gain or one fewer loss for every 34 members would have completely eliminated the net loss in 2009."  That certainly should give Presbyterians something to think about.

Comparative Statistics 2009 can be accessed online or ordered from Presbyterian Distribution Services by calling (800) 524-2612 and requesting PDS #02056-09033.
FYIAlma College Achieves Fifth Highest Enrollment
A strong incoming class along with a nearly 90 percent overall retention of returning students has resulted in Alma College enrolling its fifth highest student enrollment in its 124-year history.

The total headcount of 1,422 students is just 25 students shy of the College's all-time high. New students number 398, the fifth highest incoming class since 2000. Last year's enrollment was 1,444.

While most students are from Michigan, the College's total headcount includes students from 25 other states and 15 countries.

"Despite a rough economy that has challenged many students and their families, we have maintained an enrollment above 1,400 as the College continues to move forward with a sense of momentum and energy," says Karen Klumpp, vice president for advancement.

The completed Hogan Center renovations and opening of the Art Smith Arena, the on-going construction of the Eddy Music Building addition, new academic programs in fields related to integrated health, and new President Jeff Abernathy greeted students as they arrived on campus this fall.

"The enrollment process requires a full campus effort both for the recruitment of new students and the retention of returning students," says Klumpp. "Our positive enrollment momentum is driven by strong academic programs, student interaction with faculty, and opportunities for students to engage in the life of the College outside of the classroom."

To support retention efforts, the College has launched First Generations Connections, a campus-wide mentoring initiative designed to help students who are the first members of their families to attend college learn about college expectations and connect with peers.
