Alternate Gift Fair OpportunityYour congregation will experience
the joy of purchasing handmade items for those they love while supporting an
exciting ministry. These handcrafts are made by villagers in Uganda who receive a good wage and
work for ACT Uganda (Agape Community Transformation). Endorsed as a mission
project by the Presbytery of Lake Huron, ACT is a partnership of
churches in Michigan who come together and
support the efforts to transform the community in Uganda and in the process be
transformed ourselves as we experience the Ugandans' love and hope in God. The
churches involved are Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist and Catholic. We work
side by side to make this happen. After paying our workers a good wage, the
revenue we raise from the sale of these products help support our other ACT
programs such as our Muko H.O.P.E. (Helping Orphans Prosper and Endure) program
of orphan sponsorship. ACT volunteers will come in and set up a beautiful
display of items for sale on a Sunday morning for your congregation. You will
delight in seeing the products and in supporting this important mission by
buying Christmas gifts for those you love!

Missionary Coming to LHP
October 8-13 Thirty years
ago the 192nd General Assembly (1980) of the United Presbyterian Church in the
U.S.A. adopted Peacemaking:
The Believers' Calling. This statement affirmed that peacemaking is central
to the gospel message and to living as disciples of Jesus. It affirmed past and
ongoing Presbyterian peacemaking efforts and called for a renewed emphasis on
peacemaking. Since 1980, individual Presbyterians, congregations, middle
governing bodies, and General Assembly programs have engaged in amazing
peacemaking ministries in the name of Jesus Christ. As part of the 30th
Anniversary of the Peacemaking Program, International Peacemakers from 8
countries are scheduled to visit the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) from
September 24 through October 18, 2009. These individuals from our partner
churches will share about ministries in their countries that seek justice and
pursue peace in the name of Jesus Christ. The Rev. Augustin Mukendi Kabongo an
International Peacemaker from the Democratic Republic of Congo will visit the
Presbytery of Lake Huron, October 8-13. Among other responsibilities he has
ministries that focus on working with children and issues that impact children.
International
Peacemakers are leaders who are engaged in peacemaking in their own areas of
the world. They are invited by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to visit with
Presbyterians in the United States and to help us understand the peace and
justice concerns of others around the world. International Peacemakers help
Presbyterians broaden their view of the world, deepen their understanding of
peace and justice issues in our own communities, and faithfully follow Jesus in
ministries extending compassion, seeking peace, and doing justice.
Churches are needed to host the Rev. Augustin Mukendi Kabongo for lunch, dinner or worship events during this time. Please contact Ralph Hillman if you are able to help out. |
Holy LaughterOur mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." Psalm 126:2
A fellow Christian once told me that God had no sense of humor.
"Nowhere," he said sanctimoniously, "does the Bible record that the
Lord Jesus laughed."
I replied, "It doesn't record that he went to the bathroom, either,
but I don't think he held it in for 33 years! He wasn't into that kind of miracle."
I hope I'm right. If God doesn't have a sense of humor, I'm doomed. Doomed, I tell you!
Because I really love humor, even religious humor, and I love to
laugh. Always have. As a kid I listened to George Carlin's vinyl LP
records. And for that one year (1974) that it was on the air, I tuned
in faithfully every week to The National Lampoon Radio Hour, which featured some unknown young comics, such as Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.
The ability to laugh at the world around you is a gift from God. I
am convinced of this, even though references to laughter are relatively
scarce in Holy Scripture. For me, there is a close connection between
humor and spirituality. Humor arouses delight and joy - two pathways of
the holy. And I'm not the only one who is onto this.
Years ago I interviewed a Roman Catholic monastic who told me his
community valued a sense of humor in people who wanted to join. Humor,
he said, indicates a healthy and balanced psychological makeup. By
contrast, people who are too serious may be hiding real issues.
Scientists have verified that a sense of humor and frequent laughter
has amazing psychological benefits. Among other things, people with a
sense of humor tend to be more relaxed, less stressed, more creative
and less prone to depression, according to a 2006 report in Psychology
Today (click here!). Moreover, the article points out numerous physiological benefits:
Laughter ... sharpens most of the instruments in our immune
system's tool kit. It activates T lymphocytes and natural killer cells,
both of which help destroy invading microorganisms. Laughter also
increases production of immunity-boosting gamma interferon and speeds
up the production of new immune cells. And it reduces levels of the
stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune response.
I bring humor into worship at church. The weekly bulletin has a
"Sunday Chuckle" - a joke or cartoon. It makes people smile. One choir
member actually got the giggles in the middle of service. I also make
the occasional wisecrack or joke during announcements, in the sermon
and whenever the appropriate occasion arises.
Laughter relaxes people, as Psychology Today points out,
and relieves stress. It brightens the mood of the church and makes
worship a much less sober, dry experience. Perhaps the most surprising
side effect I've noticed is that it sharpens the attention of people in
the pews. One senior citizen told me, "I have to listen carefully because I never know when you're going to throw in a zinger."
Do you think God has a sense of humor? If so, let me know your
thoughts. If not, let me know your thoughts and pray for me, because I
am doomed.

News Sits Down With Alma College's New President For 10 QuestionsJustin Engel, Saginaw News ALMA - Jeff Abernathy began his tenure as Alma College's new president in June. The
45-year-old former vice president and dean at Rock Island, Ill.-based
Augustana College replaced Saundra J. Tracy months before the liberal
arts school turned 125 years old. The Saginaw News sat down with
Abernathy this week and asked him 10 questions:
Q: You're nearly into your third month on the job. How's it going so far?
It's been terrific. I have to fill up big shoes.
Q: What are some things you've learned in these first few weeks that you weren't expecting coming into the role?
I've
been delighted to get to know Alma the town better. I had been to Alma
College five years before but hadn't been to all (the sights). I hadn't
contemplated the extent of the work in local communities. For me,
that's a great joy. The opportunity to work with those who aren't
directly connected to Alma College has been very pleasant.
Q: I've heard you're an avid cyclist. Do you compete?
I'm in occasional competitions. I like to ride on the rails trails on campus. It's a great resource to those of us who ride.
Q: Have you had an opportunity to meet with many students yet?
Two
weeks ago, students were just returning (to class), and some came to my
house in groups of four for ice cream. On occasion, fraternity members
will stop by. I enjoy frisbee games with them.
Q: What are some ideas you bring to the table?
We
have a great opportunity to serve Gratiot County and mid-Michigan. I've
asked whether we could develop an intern program to ensure every
student can turn their education into (real-world work). There's a
great need, specifically in mid-Michigan.
Q: A lot of colleges and universities are...continue reading. |
