A Whole New Website!
Greetings,
We are
pleased to announce that a new website for the Presbytery of Lake Huron is in
progress. This new site will be much more organized and user-friendly
than our current website.
However, in order to make the switch from the old website to the new will
require a great deal of time and some temporary changes will be put into place
in order to accomplish this task in a timely manner. The Bi-Weekly
Briefs will be put on hold during the first part of the summer. There will be
only one Bi-Weekly Brief during the month of June. That issue will
be sent out on June 16th. Any items that you would like to include
in that issue will need to be to Staci Percy ( spercy@presbylh.org)
no later than June 9th. The June 16th
Bi-Weekly Brief will include directions for receiving the daily General
Assembly updates.
There will not
be a Bi-Weekly Brief during the month of July It is
anticipated that the first Bi-Weekly Brief for the summer will be sent in
early August
During the month
of July, Staci Percy will concentrate solely on the new website. The
current website will not be updated during this time.
We send this information to you
not only so that you can be excited with us in anticipation of a new, more
user-friendly website, but also to let you know that we will need to put a few
things "on hold" while this project is taking place.
Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. We are looking
forward to the day when we are ready to "unveil" our new website.
Sincerely Yours,Louise Brokaw, General

Alma's president reflects on time at college By Linda Gittleman Gratiot Managing Editor, Morning Sun
A clergyman's wife, Saundra Tracy, Alma College president who's set to
retire next month, thought a mistake had been made when, as the new
college president, she was asked to preach sermons. And preach them in churches. "You must mean my husband," Tracy said she thought at first. "It
never occurred to me that I'd be asked to preach in church. But every
president before had been an ordained minister or had studied theology.
And these calls came from large pulpits." Her first
sermon - very different from an ordinary speech - was at the Kirk of
the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, not exactly a small chapel tucked away
in a remote village. Still, Tracy tackled the job and she did it the hard way. In
order to preach, she had to climb up to the pulpit, no easy task as it
happened, with a broken foot and crutches. That feat, by comparison,
made delivering the actual sermon seem far less intimidating and a
whole lot easier, she said. Once the sermon was preached, however, Tracy still had to climb back down. But she accomplished that successfully as well. Even
so, "It's a great way to get to know people," she said of the sermons.
"I learn a lot. I have to think through my own faith. I still preach
occasionally and I still take a very long time to work on the sermon." Tracy
took some more time to reflect on her years in Alma, providing a more
personal glimpse into her world the last nine years as the first woman
president at Alma College. She'd only been college president for one month when 9-11 hit. "This shook..." continue reading this great article online about the wife of our own former Stated Clerk, Douglas Tracy. |

Blessing of the Animals at Mt. Pleasant-First May 5
The First Presbyterian Church
of Mt. Pleasant held a Blessing of Animal Companions service May
5, 2010. Between 35-40 people attended along with their
animals. Kim DeWitt sang a solo "Feed My Lambs".
Rev. Shugert blessed an assortment of dogs and cats but also
among the pets was a turtle and a pigmy goat. The
day started out with rain but we were blessed with warm sunshine
for the service. A picnic in the church courtyard was held
after the service. Click here for a slideshow of some
the great (and very adorable) pets being blessed. Thumb Ministry Group Training Event Deckervile-FirstMay 22The TMG training event was
well attended with 40+ people turning out for breakfast, music, worship,
fellowship, learning and lunch! Speakers were CLP Chris
Wolf (Marlette-First and Second), Rev. Ken Hetzel (Croswell) and Rev. Melissa DeRosia
(Caro). Music and worship were provided by Kathy Grimes and music quartet Rose
n Thorns. Each speaker made everyone in the small groups feel like they were
helping to find ways to be more confident, more inviting, and more hospitable.
There was a lot of energy and positive thoughts as we left on what ways each of
us could help make our churches more inviting. Click here for a slideshow of the pictures from the event. We want to hear about your church's Mission Story. Please send information (and some pictures, too if possible) to Staci Percy at spercy@presbylh.org. They will be included on our Mission Stories web page and in a Bi-Weekly Brief. |

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Needs Your Help
There are several areas that Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is helping out around the country and they need your assistance. Volunteers are needed for areas that have been affected by floods, such as Georgia and Tennessee. Multiple disasters during the first
quarter of 2010 have caused the Church World Service (CWS) warehouses to become
low on cleanup buckets. About 550 buckets have been sent to help with flooding
in Kentucky and Tennessee. We are nearing the beginning of the hurricane
season, and clean-up buckets will be needed. Also needed are school kits. CWS has indicated
that they will need at least 70,000 school kits for international responses. Learn more. PDA continues to be watchful regarding
the disaster of the oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and is working with
presbyteries in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida as they
monitor and assess the situation from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Environmental Ministries Office of
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has a blog that includes information on the oil spill. The Office of Theology and Worship has
prepared several resources that congregations can use for worship and/or study. These items and other links and resources, including a
new hymn by Carolyn Gillette, can be found on the PDA web site. |
