Great New Resource Available An excellent video
study of Jesus' parables Modern Parables: Living in the Kingdom of God is a film-based Bible
study that looks at six of Jesus' parables.
For each parable there is a short dramatic film of about 15 minutes that
expresses the parable in a modern setting. A 10 minute application video
reflects on the meaning of the parable. Also included are a leaders' guide, a
participant's study book, and suggestions for teacher preparation. In addition,
there are six lessons on cinematic theology: film style and content.

Health Kits are Needed for Summer 2010
It's that time of year again. Health Kits are needed to distribute at the Health Fairs this summer. A note from the committee: Dear Pastors:
Would you please print the two Minutes for Mission in your bulletin on two Sundays in spring found on the Documents page of the presbytery's website? A personal word of encouragement
from you in the pulpit will also make a big difference in how many
respond! Many Presbyterians know little about this significant work of
our Presbytery. Drop off points are listed on the bulletin insert
found on the presbytery's website. For further information please contact Bob Lakey at (989) 793-7869 or the Presbytery Office at (800) 621-6905. Thank you.

Mt. Pleasant-First's Mobile Food Pantry Mission

Since 2006 - One Million ½ lbs of Food have been
distributed. They start arriving early in the morning before dawn.
Hundreds of people need food. Two semi-trailers are waiting for
volunteers to arrive and unload boxes of food, arranged by category-needing to
be distributed to nearly 400 guests. Every two weeks this is the
drill.
Supported by local churches, the "Red Cross Mobile Food
Pantry" is the largest Mobile Food Pantry in Michigan distributing 15,000 lbs of
food every other week.
First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant is a regular
"host" of the Mobile Food Pantry sharing life stories with the "guests".
Volunteers escort them and make the rounds pushing the grocery cart from
station to station is the best part.
Jesus said "Peter do you love me? Feed my sheep"
For more information about the Mobile Food Pantry and to see
their schedule please visit http://sage.nowsprouting.com/communitycompassionnetwork/ (To see pictures from their latest event, click here.)

The
Synod of the Covenant Mission to the USA Program

The
Synod of the Covenant Mission to the USA Program is
inviting local congregations to host one of ten church leaders from six Middle
East countries for four weeks September 29 to October 27, 2010. Host congregations are still needed. The deadline for applications has
been extended until April 30.Why should your church
participate in this program? One of the goals of the
program is to educate members of your congregation about your mission partner's
part of the world and the challenges facing Christians there. Syria,
Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, and Israel/Palestine are in the news every
day! Wouldn't it be great to put a face to the stories and hear an eye
witness account of what is actually happening? Wouldn't you like your
congregation to hear about the Christian response to some of the conflicts and
events taking place in the Middle East? At this point we have persons
representing each of those countries waiting to be assigned to a host
congregation.
How much would it cost
your congregation? The cost for hosting is shared by the
PC(USA), the Synod of the Covenant, and the local congregation. The
minimum cost for a small church is only $650. Larger congregations are
asked to pay more if they are able. The church must provide meals,
transportation, and housing. More information about the program is found
in the Frequently Asked Questions.
Who are the church
leaders who participate in this program? They
are men and women, clergy and laity, all members of ecumenical partner
denominations of the PC(USA). They are pastors, teachers,
musicians, physicians, and/or church or organization officials and
administrators. They are carefully selected by their denomination to
participate, based on their English skills, the depth of their faith, their
personality, and leadership abilities.
What are the benefits to
the hosting congregation? In addition to hearing a
first-hand version of events taking place in the Middle East, your church
members will have the opportunity to offer hospitality and friendship to a
"stranger in their midst". Relationships develop, both personal
and communal, that transform individuals and the community of faith. Here
is what one lay person said, "The most valuable
aspect of the experience for me personally was to make myself find time and
find a place in my heart for this stranger from a foreign land, a stranger who
is now like my sister and who will always be in my heart as an endless source
of inspiration." Many American Christians cannot
imagine being on the receiving end of mission activity. Church members
have an opportunity to experience the blessings that abound in both giving and
receiving when their congregation participates in the Mission to the USA
Program. For more information, or to
express interest in the program, please contact the program coordinator, Karen
Nottelmann musa@synodofthecovenant.org (231-652-1056).

Community in Prayer
As the Synod of the Covenant begins looking for a new Synod
Executive, the question of the role of Synods looms large. There are
several overtures being sent to General Assembly this year which recommend
changing the nature of Synod and their role significantly. One even
recommends the elimination of Synods. Lake Huron is one of the 11 presbyteries
which compose the Synod of the Covenant. Seven of these 11 presbyteries
are in Ohio and the other four are in Michigan.
The needs of our neighborhoods and the world for the
love and compassion of Christ are as great as they ever have been. However,
as the numbers of people and dollars for being and doing as the love and
compassion of Christ decline, we must seek guidance for the role our governing
bodies, (Sessions, Presbyteries, Synods and General Assembly), can best play to
support people in being and sharing the love and compassion of Jesus
Christ. Hence, the Synod of the
Covenant leadership, knowing there are no clear or easy answers is asking that
we be in prayer for the next few months. Please visit the Documents page of our website for the "Community in Prayer" bulletin insert regarding
this very important matter. All congregations are asked to consider
placing this in upcoming bulletins and newsletters.

Theological Education Fund Request
From the Theological Education Fund Liaison, the Rev. Karen Blatt: Our
Theological Seminaries provide the training and study we need as a denomination
for all who sense that God's call calls them to a position of ordination, a
position set aside because we know we want specific people in specific places
who can and will answer
our desire to worship with a preacher whom we know, our wish to be have our
Sessions moderated by someone for whom this is a significant position, and our thirst
to be guided and led by a theologian in residence, a person for whom the Word
lived and the word writ large in Scripture is a constant companion as well as a
consistent challenge. In your missional work, remember your financial
contribution to our Theological Education Fund and let it be another expression
of our total commitment to the connectional network of our Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.)! (And on a personal note - are there not many
whom we know who have been blessed by some scholarship help from their
Seminaries? - Just a reminder. Blessings)

Alma College breaks United Nations competition record

By Justin L. Engel | The Saginaw News April 13, 2010, 9:44PM
ALMA
- Alma College students entered the record books last week at the
National Model United Nations Conference in New York City.
For
the 14th consecutive year, conference judges awarded the college's
United Nations-impersonating team an "outstanding delegation"
recognition. That represents the longest active winning streak of any
college at the annual event, officials say.
The
honor means Alma is the winningest school in the 88-year history of the
conference with 26 "outstanding" awards, officials say.
"This
was an historical performance," said Derick "Sandy" Hulme, the group's
faculty adviser, "one of the most dominating we've had at the national
conference. We had an amazing blend of veteran student competitors and
first-year students who put on a magical performance."
Thirty students participated on two Alma teams that represented the countries of Antigua and Barbuda and Malawi.
More than 5,000 students from 29 countries in five continents competed from March 30 to April 3. Model
United Nations competitions simulate United Nations bodies addressing
international issues. College students assume the role of delegates.
At
the 50th Midwest Model United Nations Conference in St. Louis, Mo., in
February, Alma student delegations representing Bangladesh and Colombia
received "outstanding delegation" awards and a group representing
Malawi earned honorable mention.

U.S. Social Forum Another World Is Possible! Another United States is Necessary! June 22-26, 2010 · Detroit, Michigan
The U.S. Social Forum (USSF) will take place
June 22-26, 2010, at Cobo Hall and Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit.
Other workshops and community art and culture programs will take place
across the city. The USSF will convene social movements from across the
United States and globally. Organizers are reaching out to young
people, people of color, unionists, laid off and unorganized workers,
welfare recipients, veterans, persons with disabilities, indigenous
people, freedom fighters, collectives and many others. Why a social forum?
"This
is a large scale and unique opportunity to learn from each other's
experiences, shed light on social injustices and build on community
efforts to create real change," says William Copeland, a USSF staff
organizer and member of the East Michigan Environmental Action Council
(EMEAC).
Key aims
are to create an open space and a process for creating movement
convergence and coordination, raise awareness of social justice issues,
provide opportunities to share experiences and discuss strategies that
create social change and solutions to the problems facing people across
our many struggles, sectors, regions and diversity.
Why Detroit?
"Detroit
is ground zero for the economic crisis facing millions of people, not
only here in Michigan, but across the nation," says Maureen Taylor, a
USSF staff organizer and chair of the Michigan Welfare Rights
Organization (MWRO). "We are really pleased to host this historic
event, and we're sure that what happens in Detroit will have a huge
impact not only here but elsewhere."
How do we do it?
The
U.S. Social Forum is organized by thousands of social movement and
grassroots volunteers in all sectors and regions. The planning is
underway and open to everyone who wants to see a movement for real
change succeed. Working Groups are being formed, and using Internet tools like wikis you can participate and share ideas no matter where you are.
What is the U.S. Social Forum?
The
U.S. Social Forum is a movement building process. It is not a
conference but it is a space to come up with the peoples' solutions to
the economic and ecological crisis. The USSF is the next most important
step in our struggle to build a powerful multiracial, multisectoral,
intergenerational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that
transforms this country and changes history.
What do we want our world to look like?
We
must declare what we want our world to look like, and we must start
planning the path to get there. The USSF provides spaces to learn from
each other's experiences and struggles, share our analysis of the
problems our communities face, build relationships and align with our
international brothers and sisters to strategize how to reclaim our
world.
Where the Social Forum came from
The
first World Social Forum was held in January 2001 in Porto Alegre,
Brazil, during the early stages of Brazil's democratic transformation.
Millions have since participated in the social forum process all across
the world.
2007 Forum drew 12,000 to 15,000
This meeting will build upon the first USSF gathering in Atlanta 2007 that drew an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 people.
