March 08, 2010
Business leaders will gather to honor 11 movers and shakers Tuesday at the fifth annual RUBY Awards.
RUBY
- Recognizing the Upward, Bright & Young - Awards go to people
younger than 40 who excel in their professions. The event begins at 5
p.m. at the Apple Mountain Resort, 4519 N. River in Thomas Township.
Tickets cost $38.
John
Lore, president and chief executive officer of the Great Lakes Bay
Regional Alliance, is the keynote speaker. For tickets, call (989)
799-7500.
Jim
Papajesk, vice president at awards sponsor 1st State Bank in Saginaw
Township, said more than 50 Great Lakes Bay Region professionals were
nominated.
"It's
a continuation of the fact that we constantly see young people that
have done some nice things career-wise in the area." Papajesk said.
He said the RUBY Awards are unique because they focus on professional achievement.
"We
focus more on how they've made a mark on their individual professions,
not necessarily what they are doing in community service work,"
Papajesk said. "You get people that you don't normally hear about or
read about, and this a good chance to see some of the good things they
have done in their careers." Click here to read the article online.

Sowing Seeds of the Future
Presbyterian Hunger Program raises money for Haitian farmers to buy seeds
With
the spring planting season nearing in earthquake-stricken Haiti, an
emergency effort to raise money for Haitian farmers to buy seeds is
under way now through the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP).
Corn and beans are typically planted in March when the spring rains begin on the island nation.
PHP will release monies to FONDAMA, a national coalition of peasant
farmers and rural organizations. The group partners with several U.S.
congregations and individuals through PHP's Joining Hands' program,
which advocates on issues determined by the farmers themselves.
With
the influx of displaced people to Haiti's countryside, local food
systems will be taxed to feed the increasing numbers of people who are
leaving cities demolished by the January earthquake.
Rebuilding in Haiti will take years, disaster relief officials say.
"These organizations have determined that the priority is to increase
food production in order to respond to the surge of displaced people,"
says Lionel Derenoncourt, PHP's coordinator of the Joining Hands
Program. "The rainy season has begun, and, with it, the time for
planting has come.
"Corn and bean seeds are desperately needed to offset the reserve that
has already been consumed by overtaxed rural communities."
The Haitian growing cycle is 90 days. By planting now, FONDAMA says,
crops will be ready by the end of June, adding that it needs 400 tons
of seeds for distribution to 30,000 farmers nationwide to meet the
demand. The local cost for such an effort is estimated at roughly $1
million.
"We are urging Presbyterians to assist our partners as much as possible in this time," Derenoncourt said.
PHP is immediately releasing $30,000 toward the purchase of seeds in areas where the need is greatest.
Donations to the seed fund may be made through local church channels; by calling PresbyTel at (800) 872-3283; online;
or by direct mail to the Presbyterian Church (USA), Individual
Remittance Processing, PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.
Specify "PHP Account Number H000014" on all contributions.

Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Hosts 14th Annual Summer Youth Institute
July 17-31
Since 1997, the Summer Youth Institute has drawn rising high school seniors from Washington, DC to San Francisco, CA, Canby, MN to Trujillo Alto, PR and everywhere in between. These scholars come from small parishes and big steeples, big cities and small towns, US territories and Indian Nations, representing all walks of life and theological perspectives within the Presbyterian Church USA. They come to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary to ask deep questions about life and faith, to think critically about these issues and explore ministry from the pulpit and the pews.
Forming and reforming as individuals in community through study, worship, mission, and ultimate frisbee, the scholars engage one another, faculty, seminarians and SYI alums. Because of the Institute's emphasis on intentional Christian community, SYI provides a safe space to grow in faith while wrestling with real world questions where canned answers aren't accepted.

Eco-Stewards Program: West Virginia 2010 Tending the Garden: A Faith Response to Protecting and Restoring Mountains, Communities and Relationships
May 16-23, 2010 With Additional Paid Summer Internships*
Description: Are you a young adult (~20-30) searching for a way to connect your faith and environmental calling? Join us for the 2010 Eco-Stewards Program, as we delve into the complex environmental issues surrounding mountains, coal, land use, and sustainability in southern West Virginia. We will consider how these issues invite us to deepen our relationship with God and with each other -- to live more simply, to consume less, and to join in a dynamic Christian movement to care for the earth. This weeklong program will examine the faith response to environmental degradation in the West Virginia context. We will explore some of the complexities surrounding mountaintop removal coal mining. We'll listen to stories of the people and the land as we participate in a local restoration project; visit a mountaintop removal site with those who are dedicating their lives to protecting the mountains; join with local pastors in a blessing of the mountains; and converse with Yale Divinity School ethicist and professor Willis Jenkins about the theological underpinnings of land stewardship. We will also take time to breath deeply and recognize the beauty and wonder of God's Creation as we walk in the woods, float down the New River, and learn about West Virginia's traditions of living with and from the land. Our week will conclude with a Christian Community Gathering at Bluestone Camp & Retreat on the banks of Bluestone Lake. Here we will synthesize and share what we have learned and be commissioned for future eco-stewardship service. This community gathering will allow us to gain strength from and give energy to the Christian earth care movement. Sustainable farmer Joel Salatin (featured in Michael Pollan's best-selling book The Omnivore's Dilemma & Robert Kenner's documentary Food, Inc.) will be the keynote speaker for this event. Salatin, a self-proclaimed Christian environmentalist, will share his principles and practices of land stewardship for his Polyface Inc. farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The 2010 Eco-Stewards Program will provide an opportunity to meet people who are listening to the Spirit at work on this planet and within the landscape of West Virginia. You will also have a chance to share your own passions and sense of vocational call to environmental stewardship. Come, join us for the week or maybe, for the full summer as an intern with one of our partner organizations. Or perhaps, these hills will call you home for longer... For more information or to apply, see www.ecostewardsprogram.org. A full brochure and additional information can also be found on the Upcoming Events page of the presbytery's website. |

Winning Calvin Sermon: 'You Go Nowhere By Accident'
A sermon that examines God's providence in His
care, guidance, will and purpose for all humans was selected as the winning
entry in the Alma College Sermon Contest celebrating the 500th anniversary of
the birth of John Calvin.
Keith Geiselman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of
Ypsilanti, Mich., was awarded the $500 first prize for his sermon titled "You
Go Nowhere By Accident."
Presbyterian clergy, lay pastors and seminarians from the
Synod of the Covenant - a region encompassing approximately 800 churches in
Michigan and Ohio - were invited to write and submit a sermon on ways in which
Calvin's 16th century theology are beneficial to 21st century Christians.
Calvin, born in 1509, was a French theologian during the
Protestant Reformation and the father of the Christian belief system
called "Reformed tradition" or
"Calvinism."
"We determined a year ago to acknowledge John Calvin, who
is considered the founder of Presbyterianism, by sponsoring this contest," said
Carol Gregg, chaplain at the Presbyterian Church USA-affiliated Alma College.
"Our team of faculty judges were encouraged that pastors
wanted to talk about Calvin's history in their churches," she said. "We were
pleased with the creative applications of Calvin's theology and how pastors
made them relevant to their congregations. We appreciated all the entrants who
took the time to prepare and deliver sermons."
Winning the $300 second prize was Robert Carlson, pastor
at The Presbyterian Church of Okemos, Mich. Jeff Garrison, pastor at First
Presbyterian Church of Hastings, Mich., was awarded the $200 third prize.
Geiselman wrote in his sermon how the simple statement
"You go nowhere by accident" reinforces Calvin's teaching on God's providence
and how God is "involved in our life and creation." He quoted Calvin, who
wrote: "God not only drives the...world and all its parts in a universal motion,
but sustains, nourishes and cares for every creature, even for the little
birds. ... When we speak of the providence of God, this does not signify that
God, remaining idle in the heavens, watches over what is happening on earth;
rather God is like the captain of a ship, holding the helm in order to cope
with every event."
"Faith is indispensable to anyone who wishes to grasp
what the Providence of God is and how far it extends," wrote Geiselman. "Where
a nonbeliever can see only the play of natural forces or the effect of chance,
believers will perceive the hand of God."
The faculty judges described the winning sermon as
"inspired, lively, appealing to a wide audience, coherent and on-point from beginning
to end."
Calvin was renowned in his lifetime for his scholarly
sermons, said Brian Stratton, chair of the religious studies department at Alma
College.
"John Calvin is arguably history's most important
Protestant theologian whose influence extends far beyond the Reformed tradition
to other Christian denominations and into the secular and political spheres of
life," said Stratton.
