News from the PC(USA)
Marj Carpenter breaks hip in fall
'What a rotten deal,' says former GA moderator, news director
Marj Carpenter, former General Assembly moderator
and former director of the Presbyterian News Service, is recovering in
a Big Spring, Texas, hospital from a Dec. 31 fall in her home that
resulted in a broken hip.
Originally
a stress fracture that went undiagnosed, Carpenter's injury worsened
after she walked around on it for two weeks. "It just kept hurting more
and more," she told the Presbyterian News Service by phone on Jan. 19,
"so I went back and they said it was busted up pretty good."
Carpenter,
arguably the best-known Presbyterian in the denomination because of her
tireless speaking schedule about Presbyterian mission around the world,
had her other hip replaced several years ago.
In the next couple of days, she will...continue reading.
'Project Overture': On the road to General Assembly
PNS reveals two overtures that will be tracked through the legislative process
Seven months from today - July 11th - the 219th
General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will have
concluded in Minneapolis.
But,
in a sense, the commissioners' work in Minneapolis will simply have
been prologue to the work ahead of them in their home presbyteries.
Part of this work will include presenting the overtures passed at the
assembly that require presbyteries' approval for potential ratification
On Nov. 5, 2009, the Presbyterian News Service announced Project Overture.
Our plan: to follow, through a series of articles, an overture from
conception to the floor of the 219th General Assembly, July 3-10, 2010.
We designed the Project Overture
articles to be an "education in action" series. Not only is it our hope
that this series will help inform the PC(USA) membership of the path of
proposed legislation for potential inclusion in the Book of Order, but our additional hope is that they can be a useful adjunct to future Sunday School and Confirmation class lesson plans.
And so, the PNS announces the Overture we will be tracking. Actually, we will be tracking a pair of Overtures.

We pray for Haiti
God of compassion please watch over the people of Haiti, and weave out of these terrible happenings wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted. Guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heal wounds and provide hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffers we all suffer; through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you. Amen.

The Rev. Peter Russell, Honorably Retired From his wife, Verna: Thanks to all for prayers for Peter. He finished his radiation November 19th. We are now waiting for additional tests to be done in February. Hopefully the cancer will be gone. He has macular degeneration in both eyes and has had numerous shots in both eyes. We go to the Great Lakes Eye Clinic in Midland about every 5 weeks for checkups. Needless to say I am the designated driver now. Continued prayers would be helpful. How Can We Help Haiti?
Churches have been asking how to get money to Presbyterian
Disaster Assistance for Haiti relief. The denomination has already
sent $100,000 from the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. All future
giving will ensure an even stronger response from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
There are three ways: - Individuals
can send their donations (clearly marked for Haiti relief) to their local
church. Then the church sends them to the Presbytery Mission Treasury
Service as it would the Christmas Joy Offering. At the Presbytery level
the funds are credited to your church's account and then forwarded to the
denomination designated for Haiti relief. The reason for following this
procedure is so your church's statement of giving from the Presbytery includes
the contributions you have made to Presbyterian Disaster Relief.
- The
church can gather the individuals donations and send them straight to the
denomination (PDA). This is quicker but the funds do not get recorded at
the Presbytery level and would not be included in your church's statement of
giving.
- Individuals
can give directly to the denomination bypassing the church and
presbytery. This is the quickest way but the church doesn't have any idea
how its members have responded to this disaster.
No matter which way you decide to send funds
please mark your check with the following project number: DR000064 -
Haiti Relief. To find out more of how our denomination is involved please click here.

Grants Available from the Synod of the Covenant
A
communication was received from the Synod of the Covenant that informed the
Presbytery of Lake Huron that the Synod is a potential recipient of a $50,000
grant from a charitable trust. Once the
final confirmation of the grant is made sometime in December the Synod will
divide the $50,000 equally among the presbyteries to be used according to the
specifications of the trust. At its
meeting on October 28, 2009 the Coordinating Team approved the invitation to participate. Provided that all 11 presbyteries agree to
participate the Presbytery of Lake Huron will be allocated a minimum of $4,500
from which to make grants. The
specifications of the trust are: - Grants may be used for capital
improvements only.
- Recipient congregations must have an
annual budget of less than $250,000
- Recipient congregations must be
located in communities of less than 50,000
- Weekly worship attendance must average
150 persons or less
- The Synod needs to be notified of the
selected church(es) by no later than March 31, 2010
If
you are a church that meets these criteria and wish to apply please send a
letter describing your request in detail to:
Andrea Drapp, PO Box 6129, Saginaw, MI
48608 or fax to 989-799-5286 or email to adrapp@presbylh.org no later than
February 26, 2010.

Bay City-Westminster's Thanksgiving Baskets
For the past three years, the students of the healthcare
classes at the Bay County ISD program have been making baskets and distributing
them along with our baskets. The
emergency food pantry of Bay County provides gift certificates for them and the
students collect the food that goes into the baskets. On the day of the distribution, the students
provide help with carrying the baskets out to the cars for folks who require
help. This year, Crop Production
Services of Auburn heard about the project and donated $1000.00 to the ISD
students and asked if they could also be involved in the making and distributing of
the baskets.
This help took the form of delivering some of the baskets
directly to the homes of people who didn't have transportation or could not get
to the church to pick up their baskets.
Thus, through the combined efforts of all three groups, we distributed
almost 200 Thanksgiving baskets to families in the Bay City area.
This project has
continued to grow throughout the past several years and it is all due to the
generosity and caring of the members of Westminster Presbyterian Church that
originally started the program.
Each of the "turkeys"
that are sold during the time of the program represent a $10.00 gift
certificate that is used to purchase a turkey or other fresh food items for the
family's Thanksgiving meal.
All the food collected during the drive is what makes up
the bulk of the baskets. However, we
also provide a loaf of bread and a package of rolls with each basket, which are
purchased with a discount, through Sara Lee Bakery and through the overwhelming
generosity of Mr. Dave Jensen, we are able to include a 10# bag of potatoes
with each of our baskets.
The members of
Westminster have every right to be very proud of this project and the love and
care that goes into each basket shows the light of God's love that shines
brightly in our community. For more pictures, please visit the Mission Stories page of our website.

Mission Challenge '09
You
Can Do It!
"Just GFI," says Ann Moe
The next time you are asked to take on a mammoth
organizational project, think of Mission Challenge '09. The coordinators in
Louisville had a tremendous task - coordinating the visits of 40 PC(USA)
mission personnel to 140 presbyteries during September and October 2009. Also
on the coordinators' list were international airline schedules, customs
concerns, securing visas, and cutting through other red tape.
When I was asked to coordinate the visit of mission worker Amy
Robinson to Lake Huron Presbytery, my job seemed daunting. But following
conversation with General Presbyter Louise Brokaw, I had a plan of action.
Working together, Louise and I devised a system wherein a coordinator was
identified in each of the presbytery's five regions, and a day assigned for Amy
to visit each area. The rest was history, right? Not quite.
In four of the regions, coordinators quickly fell into
place. You may remember they were Carol Gregg in Region I; Teresa Peterson in
Region III; Roger Terrill in Region IV; and Ann Merriman in Region V. Notice
what was missing? Region II, my home region. After several fruitless leads and
referrals (but a lot of nice conversations), I decided to take on the role
myself. Possibly I should have tried harder to fill the slot, because I know
for a fact there are many capable people out there.
The coordinators went to work and other than a few hiccups
that need to be addressed, plans rapidly fell into place. Not that it was all a
piece of cake. Sometimes people the coordinators contacted didn't return phone
calls. And occasionally we failed to communicate clearly. Sort of like the big,
(generally) happy family we are.
And then there were last minute concerns: conflicting
requests from the national offices about what communication aids (TV? DVD
players? Projectors? Screens?) were needed. Plus a media mini-blitz in several
of the area's newspapers - and accompanying questions from editors in those
locations. And a final, mysterious plea for a quantity of limes at each
venue!
But it all went well. Amy arrived on schedule. Her days were
varied - some busy, some less so. Some were spent with young people (youth at
First Presbyterian Church of Taymouth and students at Alma College), others
with the rest of us! If fact, in a follow-up letter, Amy commented that she was
her busiest in Lake Huron Presbytery; I'm glad she was with us before
she visited the other three Michigan presbyteries. Best of all, she was able to
convey to so many of us her love of the PC(USA) - and the church's very real
commitment to mission in partnership.
It was after her visit that I was encouraged to use this
opportunity to encourage you in the work you are doing in Lake Huron Presbytery
- work, ultimately, for God and God's Kingdom. May you be blessed in your
efforts as I was in mine! And when the opportunity arises, remember, "Just GFI
(go for it)!" Also: GWHTLC

Resettlement of Mazen Alsaqa and his Family
From Ced Currin Midland-Memorial
The Alsaqa family lost Munthir Al-Saqa, leader of the
historic Mosul (Iraq) Presbyterian Church, to terrorists who killed him in late
November 2006. Then the family was
immediately threatened. Following their
escape and many months as refugees in Jordan, the Alsaqa family is finally
resettling in Birmingham, Michigan, a northern suburb of Detroit. The family, other than Mazen, arrived in
November, 2008, and Mazen, separated by resettlement documentation errors, arrived
in early March 2009. They live in a home
(provided by nearby relatives) at 891 Humphrey Avenue, Birmingham, MI
48009. The first months of resettlement
were difficult due to complex and lengthy procedures for obtaining normal documents such as social
security cards, financial accounts, bank cards, and driver's licenses.
Throughout 2009 Mazen studied intensely for his medical board
examinations and he also continues as a part-time teaching assistant in science
classes at Oakland Community College.
Due to delays in receiving critical documents from Mosul, scheduling of his first United
States Medical License Exam has been delayed until early February. His second exam will be a couple of months
later followed by the final exam in the fall.
Mazen has potential for entering a residency program following his exams
and licensing.
Maha, the elder sister, quickly found a volunteer position
with an animal hospital where she continues to obtain experience with small
animal veterinary practices in Michigan.
With her improved English, she will soon enroll in preparatory courses
to take her Michigan veterinary board exams.
Rand, the younger sister, continues with English studies prior to taking
advanced business courses. Awatif, Mazen's mother, also continues with English studies and will
seek part-time employment.
The family worships at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church
near Birmingham, where Mazen also participates in a weekly men's Bible
study. The entire family came to
Midland, Michigan, to worship at Memorial Presbyterian Church on December
20. Mazen led an adult class on
Christians celebrating Christmas in Iraq.
They attended Christmas Eve worship services at Kirk of the Hills
Presbyterian Church.
Their resettlement benefits ended last October which placed additional financial
hardship on the family. Recognizing
this, Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland is providing some financial support in
2010. Once Mazen passes all his medical
exams and is licensed, he expects to earn sufficient income to fully support
his family.
Mazen has made presentations at a number of venues in
Michigan and other states. He welcomes
these opportunities to share his experiences and faith, but all travel related
expenses must be paid by others. He can
be reached by email at mazin_alsaqa@yahoo.com.
The family continually expresses their appreciation for the support by
Memorial Presbyterian Church and other faith communities throughout these years
of their journey. "Praise be to God!"
