2009 Undergraduate Research Conference
Towson University
April 4-5, 2009

Our annual undergraduate research conference brings together representatives from the 12 Colonial Academic Alliance institutions to present their scholarly and research endeavors to a gathering of their peers. The conference is an opportunity for students to share their work with their peers in a professional setting.
Participants will represent an array of disciplines from the traditional sciences to the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and professional schools. Attendees will also have opportunities to hear a high-profile keynote speaker and to gather information about graduate school admission and career preparation.
Last year's conference took place at Northeastern University and attracted over 70 student participants. This year's conference will be held on April 4-5, 2009, at Towson University in Towson, MD.

Meet the New Provosts
The CAA would like to welcome the provosts appointed within the last year to Drexel, Northeastern, Old Dominion, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington

Dr. Mark L. Greenberg
Interim Provost
Drexel University
Dr. Greenberg has been part of the Drexel community for 29 years. He has served as Professor of English, interim dean of the School of Education, dean of undergraduate education, and founding dean of the Pennoni Honors College. His teaching at Drexel has been recognized with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Dr. Greenberg has published three books and more than 30 articles or chapters in books and delivered more than 80 invited presentations and keynote addresses on 18th and 19th century British literature, literature and technology, and literature and science.
Dr. Stephen W. Director
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Northeastern University
Dr. Director, who recently served as provost at Drexel University, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He previously served as dean of engineering at both the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. Director is a pioneer in the field of electronic design automation and has a long record of commitment to, and innovation in, engineering education. He has published more than 150 papers and authored or co-authored six texts, and has received numerous awards for his research and educational contributions, including the IEEE Education Medal.
Dr. Carol SimpsonProvost and Vice President for Academic AffairsOld Dominion UniversityPrior to her appointment at Old Dominion, Simpson served as vice president and provost at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts and as associate provost for research and graduate education at Boston University. She also has more than four years' experience as a program officer with the National Science Foundation, overseeing a $7 million budget. As a faculty member, Simpson served as professor and chair of the earth sciences department at Boston University, associate professor at both Johns Hopkins University and Virginia Tech, and visiting assistant professor at Oklahoma State University and Brown University. An expert in structural geology and tectonics, she has authored more than 50 refereed publications and more than 80 professional conference papers.
Dr. Brian R. Chapman Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
University of North Carolina Wilmington
Dr. Chapman previously served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at West Texas A&M University and as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sam Houston State University. At both Sam Houston and West Texas A&M, he was instrumental in the development of new innovative academic programs, effective strategies for increasing student retention, and improving student learning outcomes.
Dr. Chapman also served as a professor of zoology and graduate coordinator in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia, and in faculty positions at the University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He has published numerous academic papers and conference presentations related to his research on various species of birds. | |
CAA Office Welcomes New Program Assistant

The Colonial Academic Alliance is pleased to welcome its newest staff member, Carlin Anderson, who joined the office as Program Assistant in January. Carlin has a master's degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education and has worked in international education, event planning, and development at the University of North Florida and Richmond, the American International University in London.
