The Federal Judicial Center is the research and education center of the federal judicial system. It allows federal judges the opportunity to explore various topics outside of the courtroom.
The Judicial Center's educational division produces educational programs, services and resources for federal judges. Recently, in conjunction with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Judicial Center held a program Financial Statements in the Courtroom for 50 federal judges in Chicago, Illinois. Mark Zyla was an instructor in the program focusing on business valuation concepts. Topics of interest to the judges in the program included:
- Standards of value
- Financial statement adjustments
- Business valuation approaches
- Discount and capitalization rates
- Valuation premiums and discounts
- Reliability of experts
The concept behind the Financial Statements program is that educated judges have a better understanding of a solid financial analysis and the accompanying testimony. Their decisions will reflect this knowledge.
